There is another type of shield that stops RF from entering the brain that you should perhaps consider: Cost is minimal and they come in threes. Click on ' This' on Mike's post. Spandex is dearer but more durexable. Ian

Technical question for the Mikes and Frans' of this forum. I have a small stock of St/St fine woven mesh, fine as in micron sized gaps between the wires. I would guess it is about 50% transparent, FWIW. This stuff can be cut with normal scissors. Seeing the steel nos valve condoms above I wondered if surrounding valves with this mesh stuff might have any benefits. I can happily supply samples to anyone interested in testing the effect. Any thoughts? Dave.

It will only DO something if you connect it to ground. a piece of wire must be soldered to it and connected to the ground plane. Only Mu metal (the grey one Mike showed, Not Ian's latex one ;D) does not need grounding but only shields low frequency magnetic fields from nearby transformers or speaker magnets, but not electomagnetic HF garbage/interference. Still all the other parts will remain unshielded.
If you don't experience any weird sounds you don't have to shield it or simply move it away from the source. If it comes from the mains only proper filtering will help.

and also, does anyone know of any good solid cases for this thing? i worry about the jacks and pot getting screwed up by my clumsiness and the situations created by clutter. The board itself is 4x5" so most any cases larger than that, one should be able to fit everything. The unit would have to take a hard hit to bend the knob, and the jacks even more so. They are quite sturdy but of course not damage proof. Other owners can comment on what they think. I was carrying my 0001 unit in the car back and forth to work and it took several spills with rcas plugged in, diving into the floor board and all over lol no damage if that says anything. One would have to be crazy careless dropping heavy books or something on the amp to damage it really. On the impedance's you listed, it will work fine with both, although the 27ohm cans are about as low as I would go with this amp.

Serialized kit chassis are back in stock. Sunrise now ships stock with a 6n23p russian - reflector plant built.

Just a note on a few changes to sunrise and the kit
- Small thumb screws will be included in the kit for the top plate vs the allen cap bolts to make it easier to remove the top plate. That, and they look better. This was suggested by a customer. Pics to come soon on this update.
- The 2200uF FG power supply caps will be changed to 4700uF FW series caps per many requests by customers to up the values. Since many want this change, I am rolling with it.
- Volpot grounding. I blank a very small portion of the ground plane next to the volpot to ground the nose of the volpot as per Mikes suggestion. This can improve things in an electrically noisy environment. This can be done to any sunrise amp quickly and easily. Also it will not be noticeable the way it is implemented and as an added benefit, will reinforce the volpot. I am going to include the modification in the next manual release.
Thank you all for your continued support and suggestions to further improve this design!
Jeremy

And as promised, pics of the new thumb screws. If you guys want the part number for them, happy to provide it as they could work on a number of projects that take 4-40. Sorry could not find a metric equivalent on mouser or the sites I use here in the usa. I think they look great! For anyone that has already purchased the amp that would like a set, shoot me a PM and I will get a set to you as a thank you.

On another note. I am thinking of offering this case for the Sunrise amp. It is one of those weather proof, impact resistant foam cases that you can customized to anything. I can get them relatively cheap. Would this be something owners would want or be interested in at all? Amp fits perfect and snug. Also the lid closes perfectly even with a tube still installed in the amp. What prompted me to look for a case like this is that I travel with my amp often, taking it to the office and back. Well the other day I set the amp on top of my headphone case to carry it out with my other stuff to the car and got distracted and the amp slid off, landed right smack on the tube. Thank goodness it was not the prized 1969 from Mike or I would have called out sick from work. However loosing a tube to my own stupidity ruined the day without question. So found this case.

Jeremy, the cost of something like that and then the shipping and tax on top may be expensive to offer to foreigners like me!! It looks good though. Over here, there are those aluminium cases that have foam inside and you can cut out whatever shape you want. However, they're not particularly cheap either.

The aluminum ones are very nice and much better looking. Understood on the shipping / tax and so forth and point taken. The idea I had was to just offer it with a new purchase and just ship the amp inside, with a box around it for cosmetic protection of the case or just direct people to the model number online so they can pick one up for their gear. The plastic one above sells for about $30us so it is a rather inexpensive option compared to other plastic cases here like the pelican cases (pelican are top quality, industrial but over double the price for the same size case) Maybe this model is already sold in Europe. The brand is B&W (not quite Bowers and Wilkins ) The model is " outdoor cases / Type 10 " I would imagine these would also fit most smaller headphone amps, dacs and so forth as well so may come in handy for other uses. The foam is pre-cut into little squares. Just rip them out as desired to fit your equipment.

That's a nice idea - to retail them with a carry case. Double protection in the post as well!!
I was looking at that to see if there was any way to squeeze a headphone in as well. Perfect for work. I often find carting headphones around a pain - especailly with an amp as well.
This is a joke ...... an electric platform for the amp to rise out of the case? (Sorry, I know it's daft, but a bit James Bond!!)
Actually, you have got me thinking - there is a good use for a case to hold both amp and headphone ...
I may look into that because I'm always lugging gear back and forth.

Just put together this amp and connected it up to my ipod and superlux hd 681 headphones. It sounds fantastic. I previously built a cmoy bb and thought that sounded good but this seems so much better. How much better can the sound get? Should I consider getting some dt990 headphones? Should I look at trying other valves and where from? I have the russion 6n23p valve included with the kit

Mike sells some great matched 6n23p tubes. Best I have heard. I use one personally.
