Strangely, I've always thought my PX200s performed well on a plane (I don't have a portable amp) but have a dominant mid range otherwise Another thing I've always thought, but never blurted out, was that even though I only live aprox. 600m above sea level, headphones, of the several I've tried, sound different at home and at work (several metres above sea level). I can't be sure though as the listening enviroments are also very different.... I must try the px200. We rarely see them around in shops and it's fairly expensive. I hear it's better than the old version. (I didn't like that one) There may be more to the height and pressure with headphones. (and speakers?)

I just had a thought ....... Headphones sound very different up in a plane so perhaps differences are also heard at different heights above sea level? In a plane, I feel that the mids get sucked away and you need to have them extremely loud in order to get presence. OK - Plastic sheets in the front room and air pressure regulation coming up. I feel a Michael Jackson coming on. Of course, it does. Higher you go the lesser the sound level until you are in vacuum, like in space, where you cannot hear anything at all as the medium for sound transmission, air, is not longer available. Yeah, something like open circuit in space.

The lessair there is, then the volume would decrease. However, since the plane is pressurised and so has lots of air, I just wonder what it is that affects (in my case) the mids in particular. It could be the drone of the engine but I find the same on closed headphones as well as noise cancelling. Maybe I'm a space cadet as well Alex!!

Maybe slight shifts in blood pressure (caused by cabin pressure and flying-hastle/nerves)? Which may in turn effect hearing response. Ian, I have the old PX200s, never heard the new ones. I find them a bit iffy under normal use but seem to work better on planes

I have the old ones but find it difficult to get a good seal so there's no bass to speak of. I'd love to hear the new version but it's pretty expensive to just try.
Funny that you find it better on a plane!!! (That's an expensive listen!)

Hang the expense eh? I always find I get better seal at the zoo More seriously, it may be an ear shape thing, for me it takes a few moments of jiggling the earpieces into the sweet spot and BASS-ER-ROO!

I don't think the pressure is at ground level pressure where we listen to our system. See Alex's wiki qoute? 6,900 feet pressure and not ground 0 pressure ..............

No I haven't - what music would you recommend for that? Well, don't forget Fart Symphony in explosion major (pressure coming out) and implosion minor (after pressure come out) as well. The sound minus the smell obviously. Ask Rabbit to compose one as he's very good at it as I had seen a photo of him doing it and people blocking their noses ..........

Maybe I'm a space cadet as well Alex!! airplane's automatic cabin pressurization adapts the cabin to atmospheric pressures and it differs with the altitude. with different airplane models, sometimes the pressurization can slightly differ. so there is a difference you can really hear? . mayby its a equalizing glitch due the air pressure difference between cabine atosphere and our head/inner ear.

I'm going to buy Superlux hd 668B headphones, which will be mainly driven by PC. Should I get better sound card and/or amplifier or I'll be just fine with integrated one?

The HD668B is a sensitive can and can be driven pretty loud straight from a soundcard HP out. The SQ depends on the soundcard itself. If you feel it sounds fine then you can leave it at that. In general an external amp brings only improvements, ranging from slight to considerable Most soundcards have 'C'moy' type amplifiers already built in.
