pads: Give the EQ settings I e-mailed a whirl and listen to that with all kinds of music. Then revert back to other headphones.

Frans, I just tried those settings with the standard pads and you're right; it really does lift them from that 'pancake' feeling!! What a headphone - it can be 'tuned' from analytical to musical mode and it responds so well. Have you tried it on 120 ohms? (I'm sure you have!!) That works nicely too. Yet, it's designed for low output impedances isn't it? The bass response is astounding for a portable headphone. Totally out of the HD25 league. I'm listening to stuff that has big bass stuff on them like Shpongle and Ozric Tentacles and the bass is slamming like a full blown (big) headphone. You just wouldn't believe that this is a portable headphone with a bass that hits low and hard. How on earth does a small headphone like this give that low rumble? It's tooth rattling!! Maybe I'm just getting a really good fit? Having the amp set at 120 takes a tiny edge from the top and the overall (average perceived) balance just swings a fraction towards the bass end with less glare. (Although I didn't find it glary at the start) Listening to this now, I definitely feel that this is a £200 headphone. This one is going away with me when I'm off on my musical jaunts!!! The amp does help it and it responds well. In fact, it seems quite sensitive to amping. I guess it's an ortho next then?

I think it sounds best on 120 Ohm but EQ'd is very palpable on even small portable amplifiers. The upper mids get slightly better balanced IMO. Directly out of the Fuze only on lower listening levels as it doesn't get very loud on it, even in 'other country' setting.. The efficiency is due to it's relative high impedance not very high, at least not as high as one would expect from a 1 Tesla strenght field. The V-Jays for instance is a lot more sensitive (as is the M50 even)
The bass on these things is really unbelievable (EQ'd) and only the LCD-2 kicks the DT1350's butt but doesn't need EQ'ing. What I find very pleasant about it's bass (EQ'ed) is the sheer depth and not even a hint of rattle or resonances that annoy (well perhaps the teeth). It's ONLY present when it is there and with some music you think 'where is the bass ?' and the next song..
My Fuze is on the 'custom' setting with the DT1350 (too bad this costs some volume) and on 'flat' with other headphones. It's the only portable I use nowadays (on my work still the KSC75)
Only HP's like HE500, HE6 (these are the brighter ones) and LCD2 (mkII) are another step up... but at a price! These are NOT portable though (HE6 can only be driven from a real amp) and are all heavy in weight due to the magnets and construction.
Aside from the bass only my SFI ortho beats the DT1350 as it has the same sound as the EQ'ed DT1350 but more velvetty.

That's what I'm getting. I like it at 120 ohms very much so. On the Horizon, it really comes into its own
It's the depth of the bass that is so surprising from such a small headphone. If you take it straight from an Ipod, it's a bit flat sounding but from a decent amp, it takes off.
Much better than I expected, Frans. Even radio voice is pretty good and there's no 'chestiness' in mens' voices. No boost in the upper mids.
It's funny in that on first hearing, you don't get a lot of it and it just sounds like a bland, flat headphone until you find a good source which it matches easily.

When I got my DT1350 home (it was the one I auditioned in the shop as they had only one) I was disappointed at first. It sounds like a bass shy cheap headphone when you put it on. After EQ-ing and a very short 'adjustment' period it is Soooo easy to listen to it. effortless.. no ... ah.. a pity about this or that.. it's all just realistic and no exaggerations. instruments are very well separated and life-like. Indeed male voices are real.. not very 'thin' and certainly not 'boomy' It's a weird headphone that should be EQ-ed to become hifi. Flat, it makes a good 'tool' without many shortcomings (although the lower mids can be a bit leaning to 'honky' without EQ but not harsh or bright, just a bit lean. Pads help a tad in the good direction for this though (but quite marginal) Disclaimer:I hope my enthusiasm for this headphone doens't make a lot of people wonder if this is THE headphone to buy or own. It's not.. it's a tool that can be a very good hifi phone for SOME people that like specific traits. It's NOTHING like a HD650, K701, K550, D2000 or DT990 Those enjoying 'curved' headphones might be really disappointed if they heard this one. This is one of the headphones where I say ... Audition BEFORE you buy preferably with music/gear you own and plan to use it with.

Btw, what is the "pancake" feeling? Also, what is a "curved" HP? You mean this as usual from Signor?

It's that 'moral' pressure again!! I get that too. Chong, a 'curved' headphone is one with a ramped bass and treble so the FR graph is curved! Pancake is flat and bland. It doesn't sound like luxurious ice cream with lashings of warm chocolate (and perhaps some nuts) dripping over the side of the dish ....... (btw - you dirty old man) I'd agree. It's a 'try before you buy' headphone for sure. There are different things that could be a problem to some. One is getting a good seal in order to hear the deep bass. It literally floats away as soon as you slightly lift the pads. Getting the little pads into a good position could be fiddly. (It seems to fit me though) If you have a dodgy source - it will point it out rather well. Put this on an Ipod and it's thin. It seems to be very sensitive to EQ adjustments which suggests it could be very sensitive to amps as well. It most definitely isn't the same 'u' curve as many well liked headphones. It only has the 'rocket' bass when it is there. It isn't artificially ramped so you don't hear strong bass all of the time. Sometimes, you'd think they're not working in the bass region and suddenly it kicks in as soon as it's there on the recording. They are not instantly likeable imo. On first go, I felt very underwhelmed and it wasn't until later that I heard much more subtle things going on. The 'focus' of sound for instance. (and also that bass) In fact, my first auditions with it made me feel like it was quite limited in bandwidth until the fit was right and the music contained more wide reaching music!! Once you've heard its strengths, you can't miss them, but they're not obvious at the start because you feel a lack of emphasis anywhere really!!
