Dale, in the UK the Police are pretty much powerless what with all this political correct nonsense..... 30 years ago these cocky little f**kers would have been straight into the back of a van but these days the police are instructed to do nothing unless it's absolutely necessary. If the coppers had piled them into the back of a van screams of "racists" would be heard from miles around. FFS! That's the center of London, just look at all the passers by, you would think that was shot in Saudi f**kin' Arabia, not London! JESUS CHRIST GUYS!!!!!!!!! One of the London killers "Khuram Butt" can be seen in this video that I linked to a good while back. You'll see him in the first ten seconds walking past the copper..... you'll see him again 4 minutes into the video (and onwards)....... This was originally uploaded to Youtube in 2016..... the Police let these arseholes go without even asking their names!!!!!!!! Here we are one year later and the "Khuram Butt" character goes on a killing rampage. They don't show you this on the news do they??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All this LIES about how safe we are and how good a job the Police are doing is utter propaganda!!!! The video I linked to in January is PROOF that the Police are doing nothing and only "responding" to incidents...... as I said, at the time, the whole lot of those guys should have been piled into a van and taken to the Police station. Maybe I should leak this video to the media?? Just have!!! should be in The Sun tomorrow!

Good job they are called Hyman's and not "Hymens"..... both smell fishy, both are tasty BUT a Hymen restaurant would be a bit OTT What would you like with your Hymen Sir? A pair of poached tits and some pan fried ass please. Charleston is an interesting looking place Dale.... where do all the all the cool cats hang out? Please don't say "Hyman's Seafood Company" The humidity over there must be overbearing? A street car named desire type of oppressive, clammy heat? Everybody in your photos look so cool and air conditioned but I bet their balls and arse cracks sweat like pigs when they go outdoors?

Another radio was added to my collection today and it took me by surprise! I was in the bike shop this afternoon and my good friend Sam cleared the counter and pointed to an item I may be interested in on the floor....... This box? No it wasn't the box.... this bucket, no it wasn't the bucket..... I then spotted a Grundig Yacht Boy Radio and said "this?". I put it on the counter, had a listen and it was sounding as sweet as a nut. Anyhoo.... what was Sam doing with a Radio? Long and short of it (excuse the pun), the radio belonged to his Mother In Law who sadly passed away last December and he wanted me to have it as he knew it would go to a good home and It would be cherished and cared for under my watch. That was the last thing I expected today, coming home with a Grundig Yacht Boy radio. At first I thought it was a Yacht Boy 210 but on closer inspection it's actually a Grundig Yacht boy 209 so quite a rare Yacht Boy in the scheme of things...... quite a short run of them were made in 1969 and the run ended in 1969 so the 209 was in production for one year only. It appears to be operating perfectly and locks onto signals no probs..... it even has AFC (AFC was quite pioneering in 1969!)....... runs on 6 x D cell batteries but you can convert it to run on a PP9, there's a spare PP9 hook up lead inside which was intended to be hooked up to the "optional" Grundig PSU.... thanks to Tom_I for that tip: www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=116754More to come on this one, it's singing away on RAD2 ATM and sounding very nice indeed...... will post some photos tomorrow. Mike.

David, I seriously hope you are tuned into my wit and don't think I will actually be queuing up outside Semi-Chem tomorrow at 8am in the morning to buy one? Nope........ I'm waiting for the LIDL "Deluxe" spinner They haven't listed it yet but those in the know reckon it will coincide with Greek week...... a "deluxe" spinner AND some deluxe taramasalata, everybody is a winner

Saw these on sale in Semi-Chem the other day and asked the young girl sales assistant (checkout operator) what they did...... she told me "they spin". OK..... I was instantly interested (I love spinning things) but, before I forked out £3.99 I decided to do a little research: I'll be on their doorstep at 8am tomorrow./..... WOW that looks like serious fun

I'm still using my Marantz CD85 which I am pretty sure uses a TDA1541. I keep thinking about changing it but never do. Oddly enough it was bought by accident: I was vacillating about buying a Marantz CD10 and the dealer said take this and don't come back for a fortnight - well I did, only to pay him! I was a damned IDIOT David.......... I bought a Marantz CD10 on ebay for £99 (yes.... £99!!!) from a Rastafarian who lived in Birmingham. He obviously didn't know what it was worth but was over the moon with the £99 plus a few rare dub CD's I sent him as a thank you. When it arrived, the first thing I did was pop the hood and I couldn't believe my eyes........ It had the Trichord mods! Sonically it absolutely trounced My Marantz CD17 KI SIG.... the sheer scale of depth, minutiae of detail, expansive mindblowing soundstage.... it was like nothing I had heard before (or since). I kept it for about a year and, STUPIDLY, put it back on ebay after I fitted a new CDM 12.4 to my Marantz CD17 KI SIG.... IIRC I got about £850 for the Trichord modded CD10 but man I wish I had kept that beauty it was built like a tank and sounded like heaven! Pics here: www.rock-grotto.co.uk/audiogeddon/Marantz%20CD-10%20Trichord%20mod/index.htmlJesus David (Bullpup), that was 10 years ago!! You were even the thread starter: rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/1169/marantz-cd-playersCD10 with Trichord mods was the one CDP I wish I hadn't let go of, the £751 profit was nice but paper doesn't give you an eargasm..... I probably wasted that £751 paper on fags and booze so no gain and a hell of a lot lost. I wasn't actually expecting that much from the CD10..... IIRC I started the bid @ 99p and it just went insane £850. Just out of interest..... the CD10 was fitted with 2 x TDA1547 and a CDM-4/36 mech. www.dutchaudioclassics.nl/review/Marantz-CD10-CDplayer/

Just been reading a piece on Gerard Depardieu's daily wine consumption, allegedly fourteen bottles a day! The French health expert Professor Michel Lejoyeux, who blasted French attitudes to the heavy consumption of alcohol, and the media's admiration of his alcohol intake. He said: 'We smile about heavy users, calling them "bon vivants". 'A consumption of 14 bottles a day is beyond all data, all thresholds and health references of the World Health Organization." Depardieu must have some serious deep pockets to engage in this high living. I can't imagine he's drinking £4 bottles from Aldi. No, I could probably do 6 bottles (over a day) and that would guarantee one major hangover the next day. Fourteen bottles of wine suggests Gerard has built up a tolerance (you do) and the initial "ONE" bottle that got him pissed now requires 14 bottles to achieve the same result. Nasty nasty stuff, all alcohol should be banned and all alcoholics should be treated with the best of detox drugs and the best aftercare known to mankind. I'm currently on my 25th "NHS" detox Nigel...... round and round in circles...... THIS time I realise that there is only one person who can help me and that is ME! Fourteen bottles of wine a day is NOTHING if you have been drinking wine all your life.... your liver compensates and manages the increased consumption...... the thing with abusing your system..... you can do it for so long and then "all of a sudden", WHAMMO!, things start to shut down. That's where I am at..... I thought I was invincible but now (at 56 years old) the cracks are starting to appear........ A bottle of whisky every night of the week is to get you off to sleep? Absolutely INSANE and very damaging to the health / extremely expensive too. If Gerard is on 14 bottles a day I feel seriously sorry for the guy and will do my best to e-mail him / talk with him and do my best to help him. I can't help myself but am good at helping others...... what the hell does that say about me?

Chris..... totally forgot about your valves mate! Will get a pair boxed up right now and stick them in the post this afternoon. Reflux is no joke, hope you manage to get that sorted out. Mike. I know all about forgetfulness Mike. Next time you are at the doctors get them to ask you if you know who the Prime Minister is. Thanks for letting me know about the valves. Chris. They're in the post Chris...... should be with you Tuesday, let me know how you get on with them. Mike.

"Harold Wilson isn't it?" Well that explains the labour party manifesto !!. The what party? Who on earth are labour? Is that the black woman with the bad teeth and the guy with the beard? I know that wee Jimmie krankie has given up on "comedy" and is now leading the Scottish Nutjob Party going under the name of Nickle 0' codroe (or something fishy sounding) but not too sure about the labour party? Are they the ones who are promising to flood our country with immigrants, ban war and provide free homes to immigrants? If it's the same geezer with the beard that I am thinking of...... I wouldn't trust him to run a piss up in a brewery. He seriously needs to shave all that white face fungus off, have a bath, become interesting and develop a personality. Do I know who the Prime Minister is? I don't recognise the UK these days..... totally gone to the dogs and all politicians are in it for themselves / steering us head on into an iceberg..... full speed ahead.

btw....... Yes, it would be great to hear from Alex but he seems to have gone totally off the radar, I hope he is in good health and the same goes for Chris the Spanish sausage vendor Both are welcome back at any time, there's not a day goes by where I think of Alex..... that unfortunate stand off between certain parties did nothing other than cause division and, sadly, Alex and Chris decided to disappear rather than try to reach a compromise. My hands were tied, both sides wouldn't back down / refused to shake hands / refused to try to reach common ground and I eventually got the blame for "not taking sides" and was under the threat of "he goes or I go". Not my argument and not my place to jump in like a boxing referee and declare a winner. It could have easily been sorted out but Alex essentially apportioned blame directly at me with an "either you ban him or I go" demand..... putting pressure on me. Nope, he chose to leave, that was his decision. As I say, he's welcome back but, from what I gathered, ONLY if a certain member (one he doesn't agree with) is banned. I'm not Adolph Hitler and am not going to ban / delete anybody on the strength that another member "doesn't like his opinions". Anyhoo........... back to the TDA1541 Philips DAC.

Jeez Derek, that was my first ever CD player too! I always thought it was extremely toppy / bright but my ears were a lot younger way back then I went from the CD471 to a Philips CD850 (which I loved) and then to a Rotel RCD965LE..... once I started making half decent money I became a Marantz man I was never keen on the British offerings (Rega, Arcam etc.) I liked the Philips stuff from the get go of CD but latterly preferred the Marantz arm of Philips (it was then known as the "audiophile" sister of Philips)..... Ken Ishiwata / copper / ELNA Silmic caps + good quality Philips made swinging arm lasers / DACS etc. The Philips CD-850 had the TDA1541 and I always remember the 850 with fond memories, absoulutely loved the sound quality IIRC the amp I was using with it was an Audiolab 8000A and Monitor Audio MA14 gold speakers, a realy nice combination / superb synergy and the dimmable blue lighting on the front panel and FTS (Favourite track selection) was super sexy back in the day! I've got four Marantz CD52MKll CD players out in the workshop and they are bloody good work horses.... the only thing I have had to replace on all four of them are the tray gears but you can pick them up for a couple of quid (along with replacement belt included) totally underrated CDP's and you can pick them up for buttons...... CDM14 mech IIRC / bullet proof. Anyhoo........ I don't want to go off topic rambling on about about other stuff. I have only experienced the TDA1541 in two CD players, the Philips CD471 and the Philips CD850. It's a LONG time ago but my memories of the Philips CD471 are "Glassy / shrill top end" I sold it on pretty fast. The Philips CD850, totally different kettle of fish (same DAC) I had some really awesome eargasms from that machine. So......... It's not a question of "are you a fan of the TDA1541" more a question of what CDP made the most of it. No doubt about it...... a superb DAC back in the day but a DAC is not the be all and end all to a CD player..... a good DAC in a poorly designed circuit will not turn a pig's ear into a silk purse. What CDP did you guys have that had the TDA1541 DAC fitted?

It's quiet my end Chris because I have so much on at the moment. Car failed its MOT then it passed its MOT, going to run it for another year..... no point getting a new one just yet only 113,000 on the clock and runs like new. My first EVER MOT failure, it failed on a tie rod bush..... not a biggie BUT a fail nonetheless. I fitted a new exhaust system in February and 4 new tyres in March, gave it a full service in April (plugs / oil / air filter / oil filter) and all the trimmings so to replace it with a new car is foolish IMO..... never misses a beat / reliable workhorse / drives like new. The garden has gone into overdrive.... spending most of my free time getting down and dirty with it (it's almost a full time job)..... decided to rip out all the "bushes" / rip out all the weeds and deck most of the pine trees...... £4,500 worth of tree felling so far (and counting)..... the damned pine needles were perma blocking the gutters and getting everywhere. A few days out in the fresh air has done me the world of good! I have planted 9 different varieties of potato and am experimenting with growing them in the soil / in bags / in pots and in rubber tyres. My local tyre fitting place are happy to give me as many used tyres as I want..... it's quite an interesting way of growing potatoes: www.youtube.com/results?search_query=growing+potatoes+in+tyres I've got about 10 tyres planted so will need to pick up another 20 used tyres to get 10 x 3 tyre stacks. I'm saving them £1.50 per tyre disposal fee, saving on buying tubs so essentially only the seed potatoes and compost to pay for...... actually, the compost is free as I make my own. I reckon the garden soil crop will give the biggest yield but it will be interesting to see how the tyre crop / bag crop / bucket crop fare too...... as is always the case with me, once I find a new interest I go at it hammer and tong (which is not always a good thing!)..... the latest craze is "potatoes" / potato growing methods / potato fertilizer / manure etc. etc. etc......... a lot healthier than my "Vaping" craze though so harmless AND healthy at the same time Factor in the friggin' dentist and I have basically no free time....... I'm in the final stages of having top and bottom implants fitted (some people buy a new car!) and it will be a real learning curve with all that non removable hardware packed into my mouth..... I entered into it looking like a toothless scurvy ridden sailor and hope to come out of it with a smile as white as Donny Osmond. Not quite sure why Donny Osmond came into my mind there but......... let's digress......... The NHS Doctors are obviously on an earner..... all this crap about "overloaded waiting rooms" is just that. I haven't been to see my Doctor for a year and out of the blue I get a phone call from the surgery: "It's Riverbank surgery here is that Michael?" Yes "When can you come in for a review?" A review of what? "blood test, urine test and a general discussion about your medication with a nurse" OK, I won't go into detail but I went in, let them take blood out of my armn (I hate giving blood away) and was told, a week later, that everything was OK. 3 weeks later: "Hi, is that Michael?" Yes "Hi Michael, when can you come in for a review?" What sort of review? "blood test, urine test and a general discussion about your medication with a nurse" I've already been in for a review. "We didn't take your blood pressure, we need to take your blood pressure" OK. Sooooo.... I go for this "second" review and the first thing the nurse does is weigh me...... she then asks if I have bought a sample of urine with me....... I replied "not the usual thing I do on a first date" she then takes my blood pressure (tells me it's a bit high) and then asked me to put my arm on a pillow..... I was like "eh? more blood? No way, I'm sorry, I hate needles penetrating my viens, makes me feel sick. She was fine with that but insisted that I brought in a "mid flow sample" of my urine so she could do a dip check of my urine........ booked in again tomorrow at 12:15 for a nurse to dip check a bottle of my piss. WTF!!!! ? Nothing wrong with me (apart from looking forward to a fast "moonwalk" shuffle off this mortal coil), fit as a fiddle (as fit as any 56 year old boozer / smoker can hope to be) yet called in to the surgery on a few occasions to check my fluids? The health service has gone tits up.

Thanks Mike. I have kept the whole setup running 24/7 (for a good few years now) so I shouldn't be surprised that it's starting to show some signs of wear! Could you let me know what I'd need to recap it, please? Hopefully, if that goes well, I can do the X10D next. That's over to you Rumbust, Pop the hood, take a few photos and let me know the values of the existing caps...... the X-DAC is not something that has come into my hands but it will be the usual 1000uF / 35V Jamicon power caps on board and the values are clearly marked on the sides of the capacitors so pop the hood and let's have a look....... it will be simple to replace them but let's add a bit of extra capacitance in the PSU section / replace the stock 1000uF with 1500uF..... that will improve things in the sonic dept. too. awaiting photos best regards, Mike.

Hi Rumbus, Welcome to the forum If the DAC has been in the same position (in your system) for a while then it's unlikely to be a ground loop. Did the hum come on gradually..... ie: started off pretty low level but is now very noticeable or did it come on suddenly one day? The X-DAC is exactly 20 years old (introduced in 1997) so it's more than likely that a few of the capacitors have dried out / gone high ESR. Some of the 85C general purpose Jamicon capacitors tend to go after about 15 years in an X-CAN V2 but the ambient temperature inside a V2 is a LOT warmer than inside an X-DAC but at 20 years I would definitely be looking at re-capping the X-DAC. If you have left it powered up permanently (as MF recommend) then it will definitely be one or more of the capacitors. Are you positive it's the X-DAC that is humming and not something else it's connected to? A recap using good quality 105C rated Panasonic caps is not expensive....... probably around the £50 mark (parts and labour) but if you do it yourself a LOT cheaper. Best regards, Mike.
