I had a quick run through last night and left the "li'l grilla " on bake over night. This morning I had time for a play... I like the method of negotiating the SD/USB folders and files, very simple and works well for me. I did not experience any stuttering using basic quality SD and USB memory inputs. The display is nice and clear and is adjustable for both brightness and contrast. I have not had a chance to try the rear digital ins or outs. Without any comparison to other hardware the sound quality seems very good, it certainly didn't make me think it was obviously lacking in any department. Basically, at this price, zero complaints on SQ, only praise. It is quite capable of revealing differences in file quality, not just between MP3 and wav but "my wav" and "Alex wav" Anyhosen, it's cooking away nicely at home and we'll see if it has much burn in advantage.

Mines arrived.
Works.
Initial sound very good (using it as an SD player only - I have not tried the internal DAC).
The menu & display are nice.
Leaving it to warm up now.
Mike - I assume you will pinkie it. I would be interested in any comments here as the wall wart looks a little pooh.

Aaargh! Mine's arrived, too, BUT the wall-wart only has a US plug on it. I've loads of trafos around the house, but none that give out more than 1.25A at 12V. The one with the Aune is 2A and I'm sure I read somewhere (here?) that the Aune actually needs only 1.5A.
What to do?
EDIT: Doh! Silly me! Just spotted that the trafo takes a figure of 8 input lead! I wondered why nobody else had commented on this: it's just that you engaged your eyes before you engaged your typing fingers!
Now, where's that old mains-powered B&O tranny got to?
EDIT 2: Also realised I can just snip the end off the supplied cable and stick a 13A plug on it! Double Doh!

No worries! The mains lead is detachable, just pop a UK figure-of-eight jobby onto the power adaptor. I think they are all USA version, I stuffed in a euro stylee. edit; posts passing like ships in the night

Ok, after sticking some rubber feat on my Ape, it is now hooked up to my G2 at present, currently playing from my Transcend SDHC class 6, out of my Cowon MP3, so i am familiar with how these tracks sound, using the same combo +HD800`s. Easy to navigate round the system using the remote control The SQ is excellent, certainly on par with, if not better, than the Cowon which i rate very highly. Have yet to try a usb stick, or fed from my musi outboard, or Asus Essence inboard computer card, but i am more than happy with the results so far. Mick.

Aaargh! (Again!)
Got it plugged in (thanks CJ, realised just before you posted!) and it turns on, all OK with the menus, but refuses to budge when I select 'Play Songs'. I've got a FAT32-formatted 8GB USB stick full of folders of FLACS, but, although the light on the USB flashes (so something's happening) no signs of the Aune getting any further...
EDIT:
Just tried a 8GB SDHC card and that works fine. Where am I going wrong with the USB stick?

Hi John, Just downloaded a MP3 AND A FLAC file to my usb stick, MP3 plays fine, the FLAC file gives similar results as yours, clicks on, then instantly clicks off. before playing Mick.

Hi Mick
So the Aune won't play FLACs from USB? This is a disaster for me: I've got loads of CDs ripped as FLACs, and USB sticks are much cheaper (£20 for 32GB) than equivalent-sized SDHC cards, so that's what I've got, and intended using in the main. I was also going to see how an external HDD worked via USB...

I don't have a single Flac file so can't comment.
BUT
If you fire off a nice enquiry to Candy I'm sure help will be forthcoming, there may be a "trick" to it.

At first I thought that the whole USB socket was jiggered, as I tried 3 or 4 USB sticks and an SD-card-to-USB converter, none of which worked (although with one USB stick the Aune registered it briefly, but, as Mike found, it wouldn't play).
I've just tried a USB-based MP3 player (an old Philips device, with a 2GB memory) which only takes MP3s, not FLACs, and this worked perfectly in the Aune. I've just checked and the Philips is formatted FAT, not FAT32 or NTFS, so this may be the factor.
Still a bummer, though, as having to format USB sticks in FAT (and not FAT32) is very limiting...
PS Sent a message to Candy.

John, I have just converted a lossless file from iTunes to Flac, downloaded it to my USB stick, and that plays perfectly on the Ape, not sure but i think the file i was trying to play previously, that did not want to play, was to high a resolution. Mick. Ummmmm!!!!!, its so much easier to stick a cd in a cd player. ;D

Mick
Could you check how your USB stick is formatted, please? (You'll probably know this already, but just in case you don't, stick it in your PC, locate it in Computer/Explorer, right click, then 'Properties' and see what it says after 'File System'.)

Thanks, Mick
That's not the problem, then. I'm just reformatting one of my USBs to FAT (or exFAT, as Vista calls it) and I'll see if the Aune can read FLACs and MP3s from that...

This is soooo frustrating.
Re-formatting one of my USB sticks to (ex)FAT made no difference whasoever.
The Aune won't read anything off my USB sticks, not FLACs, not MP3s, whether they're formatted in FAT or FAT32. The only device that works in the front USB socket is the ancient Philips MP3 player (FAT file system).
When inserted into the Aune, and re-booting, I can get the USB's light(s) to flash (and this flashing goes on for some time, at least a minute) but then, nothing, 'Play Music' only leads to the SD card, nothing more...
I'm at a loss now to take this any further.

Leo burnt a load of FLAC files onto a DVD for me, I have transferred them to a USB stick and they all play fine, no probs at all.

John, Put the USB stick in and then reboot the Mini APE.... give it a minute to do it's thang and then try playing them I've noticed, with mine, that sometimes you have to have the USB stick slotted in before you power the beast up..... Also, if you want to play the entire album don't press the OK button on the remote, click the play button >ll to return to the main menu keep pressing the stop button [] See if this works. Mike.

There is clearly a compatibility problem with some USB devices: my 8GB Toshiba, 8GB Dane-Elec and an SD-card-to-USB converter do not work in the Aune Mini APE. They do not even register, so pressing OK on 'Play Songs' only shows up the inserted SD card, nothing more.
I have tried inserting these devices 'hot' and 'cold', I've tried re-starting the Aune, I've tried turning it off completely and, although there is often much light-flashing on the USB stick, it still doesn't read these devices. Believe me, I’ve tried it every which way, including reformatting the USB sticks to other file systems, but nothing seems to work.
On the other hand, it works perfectly with the little USB Philips MP3 player (but which is limited to 2GB). Late last night, in desperation, I tried to see what it would do with an external 1.5TB HDD (a 3.5" desktop model, which has its own power supply). It took the Aune an age to read the disk (there was over 700GB of material, not all music, so that wasn't surprising) and much flashing of the HDD light and then, Bingo!, it worked, playing all the FLACs as well as the MP3s.
I thought this would give me the solution I wanted (I'd planned on getting a dedicated desktop HDD to provide a source for the Aune), but, as someone pointed out earlier on this thread, scrolling through hundreds of music albums on the Aune is not really practicable: I only got as far as the ‘D’s before I lost the will to live. (Although I suppose an alternative would be to put the albums into separate, alphabetised folders.)
Candy’s response was that there might be a compatibility problem and suggests I try a USB hub.
If anybody else has any suggestions as to what I can do to get USB sticks to work, I’d love to try it.

I have now tried four USB sticks and they all work with FLAC files John.... they are all FAT32 and I have defragged all of them. Why not try resetting the APE? I can send you the .exe which resets it, may be worth a try....

That would be great Mike, plus instructions on how to use it! (Although I' d assume that this latest batch would have the most recent updates on it anyway?)
Meanwhile, in breaking news: I remembered I had a 4 port USB hub lying round unused, from the days when my Hewlett Packard PC (bought in 2000!) only had one USB port. And guess what? At least one of the USB sticks now works! (I'm reformatting another one back to FAT32, and a full format is taking ages.)
(My joy is short-lived, however, as SWMBO has just proclaimed that the USB hub constitutes too many wires!)
PS Does anybody else find that their Aune Mini APE gives a very audible mechanical click as it changes from one track to another? (This is from the device itself, not audible through the audio output.)

I will email it later John..... basically, you connect the Mini APE to the computer and once it is recognised you then run the exe which resets the APE. Try defragging a USB stick.... my 16GB stick took 20 minutes! Theoretically it should now sound better as the bits and bobs will be faster to access

Thanks, Mike.
I presume the Aune would need to be attached to the PC using the supplied USB lead into the back, rather than the front USB port?
