For me the mini-ape is more attractive and fits my needs/wants well. 1) Can omit the PC from the playbck chain. 2) Is small enough to move around at will. 3) Is able to o/p to an external DAC for improved SQ
I cannot see it or its big brother replacing good quality DACs etc at this stage, as Alex stated earlier in this thread. The future may bring something else.
This is a cheap, thanks to Mike, versatile unit that will currently fill a niche. I cannot see any reason to buy big-bruv until it is further down the development road. All, of cousre, IMHO.

OK, so my Mini APE is hopefully knuckling its way to me as we speak. As far as I can tell, the only 2 credible options for quality playback are WAV (downside = large files) and lossless compression (FLAC) with smaller files and no loss of quality. It would, therefore, seem to be a no-brainer to go down the FLAC route. Or am I making a stupid assumption? So, here comes the Noob question, what's the best software to rip CD to FLAC/WAV - there seem to be dozens of programs that do this (it doesn't have to be free). I'm also mindful of trying to future-proof any music (I'm already stuffed with a load of music that I can't play outside of iTunes). So would WAV be a better choice as it could be used in, say, a music server at a later date - I don't want to have to re-rip! Also, would there be any difference using coax or optical output? Thanks, Dicky

Dicky, If you're looking for the BEST software, you probably want EAC: www.exactaudiocopy.de/It's a fairly terrifying bit of software to look at, and not totally intuitive to use, but it rips CDs very accurately by adjusting settings to suit your drive, and then checks the rip against a library to give you a % accuracy - normally in the 99.9-100% range. It can take longer than other rippers though - usually about 20 minutes for an album. FLAC has two main advantages over WAV: it's a smaller filesize and it's taggable. The first is self-explanatory, but the second is actually much more useful - especially in the Mini-APE situation. A WAV file can only have basic tags: A track name and a track number, I think. FLAC can have those and artist, year, genre, disc number etcetera - EAC can retrieve this data for almost all released CDs from a database if you tell it to. From what I can tell, this is what the Mini-APE displays on its screen. I personally can't hear a difference between FLAC and WAV, and the added versatility is very useful. The only issue (as you hit upon) is that iTunes doesn't like FLAC, and the APE doesn't like Apple Lossless. Perhaps a future firmware update could help? As for coax and optical, as I understand it optical has far higher 'jitter' (if you believe in jitter). Coax provides a much cleaner digital signal and the only real reason to use optical is to electrically isolate your digital source from your DAC to prevent a ground loop. Or perhaps you just want optical because the idea of your music as photons is inherently cool. -JoetheArachnid

Joe With optical you are inserting an extra stage. The conversion to the optical format for transmission, and then an optical receiver, which may have bandwidth limitations (they vary between those of the same nominal bandwidth) ,which then converts back to the original format again ! At the DAC the Optical receiver is more than likely sharing it's PSU with some other device too.The potential for increased Jitter is there too from both ends of the chain when Optical is used. Alex
