You don't want to know I've got the output stage powered from Paul Hynes regs, this thing is going to cause a lot of the high end stuff some major problems

I'll try it with LM317/337 + JLH's soon to see how it is, if its half as good with those as it is with the Paul Hynes it should satisfy most folks Hope your speakers are good at handling bass

I've now tried standard LM317/337 and LM317/337 + JLH. In this case JLH added more smoothness and mid to lower mid weight. For the first time I'm not sure if I liked the JLH or not, I'm thinking it could be the SVP Polymer caps used on the Buffalo32, these are very low impedance, added with the JLH's may have been overkill for the regulators output, I'm not sure. Further investigation me thinks!
The standard regs on there own sounded ok imo

Interesting find, Leo. I guess that the Paul Hynes are still top of the tree, but the JLH/317/337 combo is an acceptable 'stand-in' for the time being, or is the straight 317/337 or 7815/7915 fine good enough. Did the JLH you use have a Panasonic FC for the 10uF? I think I remember that this cap positional was crucial to the 'flavour' of the sound. Just a random thought that popped into my mind. Is you mate missing his new toy?

Is you mate missing his new toy? Its ok with LM317/337 or LM317/337 + JLH It improved with the JLH after a while, I guess it needed more time than normal to warm up The 10uf fitted is just Suntans, not sure what low ESR I have to try here, I don't think FM go that low and I'm sure I have no FC's here. Anyway I'll have a look This is also the one with CL bypassed Polymer are not like normal electrolytics , you really have to use them with care, they are supposed to have less distortion than fluid electrolyte caps as long as they are stable in a particular app so hopefully the SVP's are ok here Any of these alternative regs seem ok so far, its best to have a tweak though I think, the regs for the output stage do affect the sound in this dac a fair bit I might stick the scope on it when I get time

Spoke too soon, the sound has gone strange now the LM317 based regulated supply is still plugged in I'm having doubts about these SVP caps

The el cheapo DAC sounded good with a new JLH initially, but the next day I thought it may have gone faulty! 48 hours later it sounded very good for what it was. Alex

I was going to suggest the same thing as Alex. The board was most likely only built last week, and we all know what capacitor forming is like.
Just seen the thread at DIYAudio, interesting. But what all that about the cutting of tracks?! Couldn't they have placed jumpers in?
Leo, the PH regs, do you feed them rectified voltage or just ac from the transformer?

The grounding mod helped a few issues The PH regs are ran from rectified voltage Next thing I'm going to try when I get time is to have the other PH regs running the AVCC L&R and the dacs digital supply too It may be worth waiting Will tbh, I'd wait for a few more folks to try it and add opinions I'm still not 100% with it yet tbh although remember I've a lot of other stuff to compare including a modded Buffalo using different regulation and parts on the IVY

Hmm, I know what you mean, I think. The only trouble is, is getting trustworthy opinions. On head-fi, you'll get a stream of "OMG, it rules!", and I don't know which people at DIYAudio have a balanced opinion (although I think I know which ones have close minds/ears) This does seem to bring it back to you, as a trustworthy opinion Buying this weekend would be a stretch, to be honest, so waiting a bit, and seeing what's said when the board is fully burnt-in seems a good idea, as well as the future improvements that separate supplies to AVCC could bring (nice of TP to build that in, I think) Myself, I have the cheapo dac to compare it with, which I like a lot, so that is the limit of my experience. At the end of the day, I can only spend my money and make my own decision, and hope its not £300 better spent elsewhere. Looking forward to what you find!

After the money I dropped on the new conservatory, she has no grounds for complaint! Mind you, I'm really building it for a generic 'bloke at work'. Also available are: 1. I won it in a competition, and 2. I've had it for ages.

Will do Leo.
I couldn't help myself when they were sitting there, in stock.
You cant get the old buffalo anymore, so this is the one to get, I reckon. Plenty of time to get ready, shipping doesn't start until July 1st!
The PH Z1A/N regs, they don't appear on the Paul Hynes website. I assume that he still makes them though, if you ask nicely?

So it appears that TP have found a box of the original buffalo's, and will be selling them for $159 each, which is a good price. Look for them in the parts bin soon.
