Will do Leo. I couldn't help myself when they were sitting there, in stock. You cant get the old buffalo anymore, so this is the one to get, I reckon. Plenty of time to get ready, shipping doesn't start until July 1st! The PH Z1A/N regs, they don't appear on the Paul Hynes website. I assume that he still makes them though, if you ask nicely? Build it as stock first, its worth trying out the basic regs and then JLH first which is good for cheap and see how you go It seemed a little overblown and sickly smooth to me, I still think its down to the caps and the very low ESR Theres a few bits and pieces Paul Hynes will stock but doesn't show on his site, because he does a lot of custom build stuff I think he may just put the popular products on the site

What you are suggesting is exactly what I'm planning to do (the 317/337 plus JLH). The Paul Hynes bit is for later upgrades, once 'that bloke at work' wants me to have another play with it.

If you are interested in the original Buffalo Dac (9008 based), Twisted pear have a limited quantity for $159, NOW. They are listed in the 'Parts Bin' bottom of the left hand side menu.
They will go very quickly, so be quick if you want one.

The Dac also needs a balance to SE converter/buffer. Otherwise yes just the transformer.

I'll be leaving the Buffalo powered up from Saturday. Whilst I'm away for three weeks on holiday, I'm lending my Shigaclone, Class A and the Buffalo to my Dad, who promises to keep them running during that time. Should be well and truly run in by then! I've read about the Volumite option, but loosing the amp doesn't sit right in my head, for some reason. Have you had a chance to try it? PH optical whats? Do tell!

Will Paul Hynes version of the Lightspeed Optical attenuator, which incorporates Remote Control. He is the guy whose S.O.A. regulators Leo was given to appraise. Price T.B.A. Alex P.S. I hope that you don't have too much trouble getting your gear back from your dad.

Well if using balanced out and a volumite its not needed, volumite controls the attenuation for balanced or line output of the Sabre, shouldn't affect performance either, its not in the signal path Differential output should give plenty of volume for even 300R cans

I have not tried Volumite but have tried the Buffalo differential out so driving cans balanced For the attenuation I had to do it by adjusting SPDIF which is certainly not the best way but gave me an idea if it drives HD250 linear II direct Cut a long Story short Volumite is something I now want for the Buffalo

I thought I'd post a picture of how I lashed up the Buffalo, to see if it works, and also to give you guys a laugh! Ignore the scorch (take-off? ) marks, they're from when I was using the same piece of mdf to protect the wall when using the blowtorch for some plumbing work a few weeks back. Sounds fab into my Btech 928 amp Minivan, how are you controlling the volume?

i use control the spdif level of my squeezebox to control the volume, i suppose you can do the same to a pc sound card. like leo said this is not ideal, but it's still sound very good to my ear, and give you some idea the headphone out capability of the ivy, also a cheap way to try out balanced headphone.

just replace the stock regulator for the ivy with this shunt regulator diy kit i bought from ebay, it suppose to be based on a old shunt regulator from stax, cost me $26 aud shipped it does make a improvement over the stock regulator, everything seem to sound more lively, switching over to the stock regulator make thing sound a bit dull and slow in comparison.

volumite arrive and at work initial impression: you can lower the volume to listenable level without lost of micro detail and dynamic in compare to the volume control of spdif level on my squeezebox.

I have the 32s which I haven't powered up yet. I see that I can use the Jaycar/JLH as a temporary measure for the 15V but can I use the 5V section for the low volts side? If not can anyone suggest a PSU suitable for this?
I presume the three wires coming out of the JLH are duplicated to each side and that AGND is just the middle, 0V utput?
Thanks
Syd

Syd I doubt that the 5V out of the SC dual reg PSU would have enough current capability to supply adequate current when using a 30VA transformer, but it would depend on the current requirements from the +5V rail. You can feed the + and - rails from the JLH to a couple of different places. The centre pin is the 0 Volts (earth) line. Alex
