The OPA111BM are the best opamps I have heard in the Neco V2 (period) They are very unlike the typical solid state sound and impart a lovely organic, highly musical presentation to your ears.
More can be read about the Water Tanks here: rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=m&action=display&thread=6842 Have a read of both Ian's and my opinion of these opamps in the Neco toward the end of page one and page two.
I believe there was a guy selling these on ebay for a fiver each but looks like he has run out which is a real shame as I'd have bought the entire bunch off him
Technically they are "dinosaurs" but sonically they are little marvels... totally musical and engaging.... I have gone as far as to FIX my ipod onto my Neco as the combo of Neco, ipod (lossless files) and Beyer DT-990 is just STUNNING.
I have been listening to the OPA111BM in the Neco for almost a month now and they are, by far, the most musically satisfying chips I have tried in it.
I was a bit reluctant to come forward about these chips as the "technical" brigade would (and did) slate them as not suitable / not "fast" enough etc. but, sod it, My ears have always been my "instrument" for measuring musicality and the OPA111BM is one of the BEST chips I have EVER "heard".
Everything just snaps into place with them.... the music sounds like "music" and is packed with energy and soul..... if you could hear "Touch Yello" (Lossless) from Ipod (30GB) into Neco (OPA111BM) through Beyer DT-990 like I am hearing it (as I type this) you would "hear" why I rate these chips so VERY highly.
Have a look round the net for them but DON'T pay the £58 "each" that RS want for the unleaded (ROHS) versions..... the unleaded chips sound crap compared to the old stock "leaded" types so I have been informed from someone who has experience of both
The ones I have are made in UK, OPA111BM, gold pins.... genuine NOS (New Old Stock).... I am SURE I have another ten somewhere and if I find them I will gladly sell them to Neco owners for around £15 each (mounted / soldered on dip 8 sockets)..... just a case of spending a day (or two) rooting through everything in the workshop
If I can't find them then I must be going mad as I'm sure I bought more than ten of them at the time!
The "Water Tower" thang was coined by Ian.... they reminded him of water towers so DON'T "Google" OPA111BM Water towers unless you are planning on buying an "actual" water tower
I don't know why (all of a sudden) I have become reluctant to post about things I believe SOUND good..... Hell, I run the forum and don't have to pass my ideas through a panel of censors.... this is one (if not THE) best chips I have ever heard and I believe everyone should have the opportunity to try it without being branded the anti christ by the "high speed / high rez" brigade..... most of whom, by the way, don't use their ears, they rely on graphs and "specs" to pass judgement.
At the last count this joint was about "musical enjoyment" and NOT about the specifications of the equipment used to reproduce it.
Anyhoo...... here's some pRon: (by the way, I have housed my old IPOD 30GB in a 99 pence enclosure and have tacked it onto the Neco with heavy duty carpet tape..... it is as good as "welded" into position ..... I have no plans of ever separating this duo and, if I do, it's a simple case of twisting and pulling the two apart.... the carpet tape makes them both "one" and is a much better solution than rubber bands
Anyhoo...... the pRon:
