Oh by the way, i've been listening to lots of interconnects recently, and i'm quite impressed with the digital coax cables mentioned below, BUT used as an audio cable with my Neco amp ( I have 18v portable with adaptor to full size CD )...........I have tried coax as audio before, from NVA, his cables are solid tube / pipes coax.....hence the name 'sound pipes'......i have tried all 3 but the super sound pipes a bit pricey, but I'm very impressed by...... wait for it...........the digital coax cables offered by Neco's brother Memet who sells the Swiss Gotham GAC 1 cables etc on ebay...........i would really love someone elses opinion on these blue wonders but used as an audio cable.........(u have to buy two as they are sold as a single) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0-5m-GOTHAM-DIGITAL-S-PDIF-audiophile-interconnect-/370142283854?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item562e33084e

YES, in a nut shell, music feels more free, and airy, instruments don't fight or compete with each other, instead they compliment each other better, letting your ears absorb more detail and nuances and atmosphere..... ....it also gets better the more volume you put in ! !! where as if our ears are not happy with a sound, putting the volume up usually makes things worse.......... not with the OP111 ...VERY VERY happy with the very noticable difference

Great. That's what I felt with them. It's also very tempting to listen loud because they're kind of effortless, whereas with the AD8610, I feel that they start to turn a little too toppy for me. These seem to just go loud without struggling.
For me it's made the Neco sound top notch for a portable. It's really surprising with the Beyer DT990.
If I get a Bossfet (Which may happen ... not sure), I would do the same if I could.
It would be nice if Neco did a little more with op amps himself since he is highly aware of possibilities. He knows that I have 8610's so when I order from him, he automatically sticks them in for me (I have 3) but now I'm wondering about the other opamp he puts in it as standard - maybe a little softer edged than the 8610 which could suit my tastes more perhaps.
The Water Towers are terrific though and really hit the spot for me.
Ian

I am so glad that I'm not going deaf and that others can hear the potential of the OPA111BM's. To my ears they are first class in the NECO and a lot more musical than the AD8610.... try listening to the amp in a dark room, at night, with your eyes closed.... it really does enhance your perception of the music and you can hear into what the OPA111BM is doing with a better degree of insight.
I found another six of them yesterday (I thought I had ten) so will probably have a couple of pairs for sale, I would like to keep hold of the rest for personal use.

Miguel, It's kinda like tubes with no tubes. It really doesn't sound like a typical opamp! Not long now. I was watching a tv programme on hurricanes last night. Reminded me of when I was in Miami when one hit and I made a run for Orlando in the car through torrential, horizontal rain. Boats flew through the air and I could paddle in the sea right outside the hotel. Cars driven into swamps - the lot!! I stayed quite a lot in Homestead in the Motel 6 there until I met a gangster in the swimming pool and a cockroach the size of a dog. Presumably, 'tis the season in Miami now? How the hell do you cope? Ian

I have ONE pair of these left and when they are gone that is it.... I won't be hunting about for any more. I just hope that you guys who have a pair are happy with them and (if so) can blow a big raspberry to these people who "think" they know what they sound like by "looking" at a "spec sheet" This is a PRIME example of breaking the barrier between "specs" and "actual" musical performance.... NEVER believe what you read on paper and ALWAYS use your own ears to judge what any particular component can do for the music. Please don't get caught up with these current trends where everything "new" / "faster" etc. is generally accepted as "better"..... maybe in the computer world but that type of thing does not apply where musical enjoyment is concerned. This "vintage" chip has proven, to my ears, to be the most refreshing, musical opamp I have heard in a LONG time and I will start rediscovering some even older chips in my collection. So many "enthusiasts" out there who LOVE the sound of vintage equipment and they are all told that it will sound better if they replace the parts with "modern" variants.... most of the guys I know that have done this have told me it was the worst thing they have ever done and their prized possession now sounds like crap.... Could it "possibly" be that some of the sought over vintage gear is highly sought because it sounds GOOD? Could it "possibly" be that is sounds so good because of the design and the parts the designer used for that design? You will not beat the sound of a Hacker Sovereign radio, hand made in the UK (1960's - 70's)..... absolutely "to die for tone" BUT, ask any "guru" and he will tell you the parts they used were crap and modern day equivalents are sooooo much better..... Hold on though, that 40 year old Hacker Sovereign is STILL going strong (10 hours per day duty) and I still haven't heard a radio that can better it for voice / tonality etc. According to the "gurus" who sit on the toilet reading spec sheets.... that Hacker Sovereign will sound like "turd" because all the parts are outdated and "slow".... that couldn't be further from the truth! Today's FM radios just cannot compete (on ANY level) with that Hacker! No way, no how...... There is a little shop in town that sells TV's and radios etc.... I went in a few months ago for a look and got chatting to the lady about the poor digital signal where I live (TV)..... we eventually got round to talking about the demise of FM and she told me that "DAB" was the way to go blah blah blah...... I told her that I lived in "XYZ" and there wasn't a digital signal there (let alone a DAB signal)..... "oh, that's OK.... you can buy a "Wi-Fi Radio" (assuming I have a fast web connection of course )..... "FM is ancient, the only person I know who still has a radio is my mum" etc. etc. etc. I asked her what was wrong with FM? She explained that it was hard to get a signal in town and, even if you could get a signal, the channels were limited to the BBC and local stations. "Do you mind if I bring my 40 year old radio in so you can have a listen?" "Oh, we can't pick up an FM signal in the shop... we are in a dip" A few days later I took the old Hacker Sovereign into the shop.... plugged her in and PERFECT reception... she "HONESTLY" went "whooooah!, that's FANTASTIC! where did you get that from?!!" erm....... I've had it for over 40 years love.... it's a "proper" radio that would pick up a signal from Mars if they were transmitting.... So..... A "fluke" or a truly well designed piece of gear built to LAST? There was not ONE radio (wi-fi radio / DAB radio / mickey mouse radio) in that shop that came anywhere NEAR to the Hacker yet this is the shite that is being sold to everyone as the "latest and greatest"?!?! Pretty sad

IMO it doesn't "sound" at all..... with the OPA111BM I tend to listen to the music, it let's the music through.... it is the most "unopamplikesolidstatedevice" I have "not" heard in a long while Enjoy it guys..... you are "seriously" the very few who are drinking from the towers

I will send you a couple over.... you could also try the "HIGHLY REGARDED" OPA627 (plus MANY more single chips) but only if you are not satisfied with the 111

If i am not too late Mike, i will purchase and try a pr please. Thanks Mike. Mick. Just the one pair left Mick. I can supply them as "virgins", can mount them onto DIL8 sockets (mechanically mounted then supplemented with solder) or mount them on a single to dual adaptor (ie: mono towers to DIP8 dual).... Let me know what you'd like via PM. Mike.

Mike, the 111 towers are staying. Best I've heard in the Neco. In fact, I'd put them in anything that could take them personally!! What about the old Banzai? Has yours gone now? Ian

Post by PinkFloyd on Jul 28, 2011 21:33:48 GMT
I still have all six of my Banzai amps....an assortment of Jelly Top class CMOY's and, yes, they would respond well to a water tower (the NECO is a CMOY too) but there is a shortage of water towers to satisfy the thirst of my entire portable amp collection Much the same as a rice "drop" (onto masses of starving people) I am having to juggle the towers between amps...... this recession really IS having an effect on "opamp" rolling and I am finding it very hard to keep more than 17 amps going at any one time..... Conservative bastards!

I also installed storm windows in 2008 so my belongings should not be destroyed up to wind speeds of 147 mph (or so the documentation of the window manufacturer states).
