just curious to know at what impedence value could i expect there to be zero hiss on the x-cans?
i am eagerly awaiting the modded x-can, from Mike. i currently use denon d7000 (25ohms), and am expecting a bit of hiss. should this hiss disappear at say 100 ohms and higher?eg.
my current amp is a solo ultra linear which hisses with the d7000. got over the problem with a 60 ohm adapter. i do also have a 125 ohm adapter. is it likely i will need a higher value? cheers.

From Graham Slee ? I am surprised that an amplifier from him would have so much gain to make opamp hiss noticeable. Is it using an SMPS plugpack? Alex

GSP has their own forum, I'd contact Graham there directly and ask if this is normal, it shouldn't be given the marketing claims and price.
The Solo marketing blah talks of open loop gain, bit odd.

Straight from GS's website: "Please note that the Ultra-Linear technology mimics valves so closely that there is also a similar amount of the valve artefact hiss". Although this will not be a problem for most listeners because it is no louder than or different to what you'd get from actual valves, if your preference is for the utmost background silence then we recommend the Solo SRGII which is more than half as quiet.""

Alex Hi no , i ditched the stock psu and bought a lin/reg unit from rs for about £35. i had heard others say that the ultra linear solo hissed on low imp cans. Simon

my solo is preparing for a shoot out with the modded x-can that i have just bought from Mike! thing is i have also just won an auction for an x-10d and x-psu on ebay! i had planned to use this with the solo. i suppose the x-10d will not be needed with my new x-can? (but the psu should be useful, i guess) i sense a few late nights coming up

I'm just putting a few hours on your V1 right now with an X-10 V3 before it and it sounds beautiful.... You will LOVE the X-10D On the impedance thing, My lowest Z 'phones are 32 ohm grado and there is zero hiss through them with the V1. I mostly use the DT-990 pro (250ohm) these days and can confirm that they are a very good match for the V1. Mike.

Hi Simon,
A couple of last minute changes.... I have replaced the OPA2228 with OPA2227 as I feel they work better with a wider range of headphones and I have grounded the pot body to the enclosure.
The full range of the volco is deadly silent. I will get her packed tomorrow and will ship on Tuesday (my normal shipping day) I've put a good few hours on her over the weekend and she sounds great (will be even better with the MF X-PSU) but give her another 100 or so hours before expecting the best performance and always allow 30 minutes or so (after switch on) before expecting the best.
Mike.

Mike the x-can arrived today, many thanks. it is probably unfair to compare to my (matured) solo UL. But i will say (as you said) there is no noticable hiss (at safe vol levels) with my denons. in fact , the hiss at max vol, is less than on the solo at zero vol. so i guess thats first blood to the x-can. looking forward to hearing how it develops, so far very happy.

it is fair to compare now!! for me the x-can is my preferred choice. and due to hearing today that my overtime is being cut , the solo is now redundant and for sale on the FS board. great amp that it is , i cannot justify keeping both.

Happy it arrived safe and sound It will benefit from a bit of burn in as the components are all new inside it.... no set "procedure" just use it and enjoy it, it will gradually "fill out" after a few days and should blossom into something very nice indeed.. The beauty with this amp is you can try different valves, they all alter the sonic signature and you can find a pair that really suit your own personal tastes. Are you using the X-PSU with it? ATB Mike.

My Solo went long ago. I sold it to a Chinese guy. That always makes me laugh .... the Chinese buying a British amp. The Solo is expensive for what it is imo. You can buy virtually 3 X-Cans for the same. The Solo shouldn't hiss and I have no idea why Slee reckons he does this to make it sound like a tube amp. That's a blatant lie and I'm amazed that no-one in the know didn't pick up on that daft statement. To actually include hiss to make it sound like a tube amp is pure Blow rocks. He blows a lot of hot air on his site but that statement was a cracker. Valve amps don't have the hiss that he was making out unless they're poor amps. My X-Cans are silent virtually to full volume and so is the Sunrise. All valve amps .... and the Solo has hiss added to make it sound tube like. Nuts!!! Pure porkie pies. GSP has their own forum, I'd contact Graham there directly and ask if this is normal,Absolute moonshine. If they hiss, don't buy them. A poor amp hisses. NE5532 inside? Nice and cheap? The Chinese make a Class A amp using the same op amp at about £30-£40. Following what he replied to you, I wouldn't trust him again. Ian

Simon & Ian & Alex: I have a Solo Ultra Linear on loan, it has about 165 hours of burn-in with a PSU1. I have listened to the unit with a pair of Grado RS1 and did not hear any noise, I then paused the cd-player and raised the volume to max with no noise heard. Wonder if it is my old/tired ears

Wonder if it is my old/tired ears Miguel Most amplifiers can have a little hiss if the gain is higher than average, and the volume control is set to maximum. What matters is whether you can hear any hiss at a normal maximum comfortable listening level. Alex

Also Miguel, to make a statement to a customer saying the hiss is there in order to make it sound like a 'tube' amp is just daft. It sounds as though he positively aimed at getting hiss on the amp!!
I agree with Alex, you would normally hear very slight noise at the top of the vol pot travel on any amp really, but to say that you added it on purpose is taking the mick!!
In any case, my V1 and V2 just don't hiss.

I am really surprised that Graham actually wrote that shite (let alone PUBLISH it on the WWW) He must have listened to some exceptionally shite valve amps to come to the conclusion that they all "hiss"... I have never read such absolute nonsense. Even MORE disturbing is the fact that he has produced a hissy solid state amp and has tried to punt it out as "sounding like a valve amp".... erm, no...... a good valve amp does NOT hiss (unless the valves are cream crackered) and if they DID "hiss" I am sure that not many people would buy them. How many of you valve amp owners here have a valve amp that "hisses"? I have about ten of them and not ONE of them hiss, they are deadly silent. I have heard hundreds of them and the only ones that have hissed are ones with dodgy valves that need replacing. "valve artefact hiss"...... eh? that's a new one on me! Musical Fidelity X-CAN V8 (with added HISS).... this is our best amp yet, it hisses like crazy just the way a good valve amp should!Project Sunrise.... our latest amp with that valve hiss that all you audiophiles love! I will be complaining to MF and Project Sunrise because my amps came without hiss..... the only reason I bought them was for the valve hiss.... I am so disappointed, there is no hiss An absolute crock of BS!!!!

Sounds like a good excuse for a batch of noisy Asian sourced SMPS plugpacks ! "The Solo is more than half as quiet" WOW ! That's one helluva lot of Decibels difference ?

There's another quote from Graham which I will look out later on where he basically says he has no experience of actually working with valves!!!!!!! I agree with the above, BTW, Alex (your comments re the noisy warts) but totally disagree with all that bull about hissy valves!

"The Solo is more than half as quiet" I would expect an amp costing half a grand to be deadly SILENT!
