Jeremy, maybe I'm missing something obvious but Frans said ealier (reply #332)........"When you have the caps in, so not bypassed (recommended) the advantages of this mod are less audible, if audible at all". It looks as if you're saying the opposite, presuming that TC means thru the caps. For a confused old geezer please clarify !!

You are correct, typo on my part, should have been "BPC, not TC" This mod is for users that mainly use the amp in bypass mode on the input caps.

How well does the sunrise amp drive the he-6? Kit should land tomorrow, but I was curious if anyone had an opinion.

The HE-6 needs a powerfull amp to blossom. Sunrise will give 'only' 300mW into 50 Ohms (HE-6) in 10 Ohm output setting. Since the efficiency is very low it will be able to put out 102dB SPL max. With the HE5 it will be able to put out 113dB which is twice as loud.
a more powerfull version is in design phase and can put out about the same power as the HE-5.

I have tried the mk1 version i have, and unless you listen at very low levels, (not recommended with the HE-6`s), you need to give them some volume to get the best from them. So i would say its not suitable. Mick.

Thanks gang. Didn't think it'd be enough. No worries, I know it'll drive my HE-500's quite nicely :-)

Here she is in production form. Sunrise II now shipping Project Sunrise II Serial #: 0001 is alive! It was a fun build Jeremy, and I'm enjoying the sonics. A week of burn in ahead, and I'll write up a proper review here and headfi. I do have a couple of comments re: documentation, but I'll send that to you directly. Well done mate!

Has anyone built an enclosure for the sunrise? I'd be interested to see any photos, intructions etc

Hey Mike, Info was much appreciated!
Davefo, I have not seen anyone put one in an enclosure at all. With the heat generated, it would have to be well ventilated that is for sure!

Hey Jeremy, My Sunrise S/N K0003 (assembled by yours truly ) arrived today -- back from sending it to you for modding. As you recall, in my PMs I questioned whether it was worth the effort implementing the upgrade mod to this already superb HP Amp , and am very glad that I followed your advice to send it to you. Before I listened to it earlier today, I was expecting an extremely subtle change, but was very pleasantly surprised! Since I always use my amp in the cap bypass mode, i.e., BP setting, the improvement was remarkable!!! WOW!!!! First thing that was apparent was that the scratchiness when turning the volpot was gone forever! Then I also noticed that the sound has slightly, but noticeably, smoothed out, with perhaps a bit more air around the instruments than before the mod. There was also a very noticeable improvement in tracking, especially at higher volumes, with the volpot set at around 1 o'clock and higher. All in all, a very worthwhile upgrade! Thank you so much for making an already great amplifier into an outstanding one! You and Frans deserve high praise for creating some wonderful amps, and I am kind of wondering whether I should think about the upcoming Horizon with its higher power, for I have yet to come up with something powerful enough to drive my AKG K701 headphones, which may possibly benefit from it. Frans, what is your opinion on this? Do you think the AKG K701 and the Horizon will be a good match? I know you don't like the K701s, but I still hope that driven properly they may be worth exploring, for I do like the detailed sound and wide sound stage they are capable of, but somewhat lacking in bass. They did benefit some from the inline 180 Ohm output resistors. Cheers! Israel

Much appreciated Israel. I sling the solder and work the hardware / kits, manuals, and everything in general you see with the amp and kits, as that is more my specialty. The mod itself is Frans doing as he is the man on the electrical side. I humbly just implemented the mod in your amp.
IMO the future Project Ember would be the amp for the 701's. Horizon will be more for high impedance cans. Frans may have a different view...?

The horizon will indeed be more suited for 300 to 600 Ohms headphones so they have more 'dynamic range'. Low Ohmic headphones (K701) may be driven marginally louder by the Sunrise. Both of these amps are single ended class-A, hence different optimal power ranges for different impedances. Not owning a K701 anymore I can't verify but possibly the higher output resistance it will have (120 Ohm) might suit the K701 better. HOW much difference I cannot say as most of it's sound is determined by the added (pleasant) harmonic distortion. The Ember (an implementation of my OPA-88 design) will be very powerful and can drive low and high Ohmic headphones to above their limits and has 0 Ohm and 120 Ohm output and may be more suited. Since this is not class A but retains the sonic properties of the Sunrise/Horizon and in addition will auto-bias (Javier may appreciate that feature having an auto-bias G2) makes it different. Only your ears will be able to tell. Perhaps Jeremy could offer an 'audition service' when postal costs are covered by the time it is there ? It will probably not be available before the end of this summer or even this year. Launching too soon would not be a wise decision.

Do I appreciate the auto-bias function? that is quite an understatement, I truly love the thing. Not only saves hours of periodically adjusting and readjusting bias with the difficult to get right and match trim pots with your favourite valve if you want optimal performance, it also makes valve rolling a plug'n play pleasure and assures one is always listening the amp performing at its best, what more could you hope for?

Even though Sunrise II and Horizon are not auto bias, I think you would like the ease of use for setting the bias. Takes about 30 seconds to get bias in line and that is not cutting it short or being in a hurry as I timed it. Just set the jumper for the left or right channel, turn the trimmer until the leds match (equally dim) and go to the opposite channel and repeat. With the 25 turn trimmers, it is pretty easy to get them dialed in equally.

Question for those who have Project Sunrise I/II. Using the right CAN for the job and the same tube (6H23N or whatever)...HOW does this unit compare to an adjusted (15,5V for IRF510) and fully "Fransified" Indeed G2?
- Better stereo imaging? - Airier Highs? - Better detail retrieval? - Much more harmonic information?
Thanks a lot for your kind comments. P.S. Kudos for Solderdude and his thorough G2 tweaking guide.

Hi all, not new here but a long since lapsed member!
I'm following this thread with interest as my PSII finally turned up today - can't wait to have it built!
Does anyone have the latest build instructions pdf? There wasn't one in my box.
Cheers,
Neil

Some values have changed in the Sunrise II (as I am now tweaking it). I don't know if Jeremy supplied the newer value parts already.
Feel free to shoot me or jeremy a PM before you start populating the board. It is a real PITA to unsolder parts.
Please check with Jeremy or me for the build instructions.
