I didn't imagine the difference your butyl rubber mod made to my AT W1000 . It added a little more clarity, and a cleaner sounding low end.

You have better ears than me so probably best that you compare the two Oh gawd ....... the pressure!!! Ian Yup.... it "IS" pressure It's why, sometimes, I feel like hitting the "are you SURE you want to delete this forum?" button a SECOND time It's not easy keeping up with all this stuff and it becomes a MAJOR part of your life.... sometimes I just want to say "fekk off" to everybody and go sniff the roses but the next day I feel fine..... I think what we ALL need here is some time out..... I have booked a flight to China in November with the intention of spending the Winter over there, I just can't "do" another Winter sitting here typing away at my keyboard, it's killing me

WOW!!! That will be fantastic, Mike. I'm only havin' a laugh - it's not that bad! I can understand how you feel right up there in the winter. Jeez, you barely get a summer really. You need a good woman - that's what it is. Someone who doesn't mind the hobbies and interests and doesn't grip you round the throat and bolt you down. My first marriage was a 'bolt down' job. Someone who married a musician and then didn't like being married to a musician!!!! Crazy. Learned a nasty lesson and the second time around, everything became normal again. Someone as mad as me!! China would be freakin' amazing!!! You'll get a very tanned head. Ian

You guys have me convinced I need to get a pair of DT 990 Pro's, Seems they are very widely liked and price looks great. Any negatives to them or are they more of a jack of all trades type of can?

I reckon a good all rounder, Jeremy. It is a good match with the Sunrise too. Lifted bass but very mellow and round. Great with rock stuff but generally, never sounds too bad really. The version we're using is the DT990 pro which is 250 ohms. Tough as old boots as well. The build is industry standard. One of my favourite combos is the Sunrise and DT990. Ian

Appreciate it Ian. Now to start the hunt to pick up a set. Frans pointed out the forum has a dt990 dedicated post, I did not see it so will look there for more info and if I have some more questions.

(edited for cheek!) You bloody piss 'ed! Beer first thing in the morning, tut, tut. I must admit, Chris, I have been raiding the barrel this week. I need something when I'm sending helis right up into the sky. You have to be pissed to do that!!! Beer is a disgusting price over here. Anyway, it's Sunday evening here!!!! Are you in Monday already? Now that's a lot of vino!!!! I'm on an IPad and typing is he'll!!!! Ian

The price of beer over here is OK (as you know) but the beer itself is of the lager/beer type. Unless you hit an English "ere we go" type area, which you really don't want to! Of the Spanish ones I like Alhambra, especially the Reserva 1925 which is rather tasty and quite strong. BUT I still prefer a good old bitter, ale, stout etc. I guess after a few sherbets the helicopter could become a heli-flopter

Tell you what Chris, even when 1 oz. of heli hurtles down at you from 100 or more feet, you duck even when you're pissed!!
I got it way over the house and it went down on the other side. Went out of view so I revved hard and it shot back up in the sky from the other side of the house and then attacked me from space.
I think my new heli is related to a frigging rocket!!
It got me sober so I had to crack another bottle open!!! Well, it was 27 degrees today.

Hi, someone better than me have tried the PS bypassing capacitors? To me it seems more detailed and slightly more open sound stage. Am I wrong?
(PS> Philips SQ E88cc)

I think 55dsl means a separate cap in parallel to the PS caps (the 2200/35V).
You can do this but the caps already are bypassed on a more suited place namely closer to the point where decoupling does something, i.e. the IRF510 that need decoupling.
Of course when you solder caps in parallel most people will almost certainly hear improvements. The fun of the sunrise... it's a DIY design so you can bypass every cap. It certainly won't do any harm.

Perhaps with some designs, but in a modern well designed amplifier having a wide bandwidth, this may often result in etched treble and a fatigueing sound during extended listening sessions.

I totally disagree with that and also disagree with your "it won't do any harm" statement Frans. Holus bolus bypassing can actually "degrade" the sound quality (as I am sure Leo, Alex, Dr. David White and others will attest to)... the "type" of bypass capacitor can also affect the SQ as can the value. Simply whacking a few film caps onto electrolytics is not necessarily going to do anything and may totally smother the SQ. "Selective" bypassing can sometimes bring about very noticeable improvements in SQ and (usually) it's the power caps that benefit from bypassing. As I say, bypassing "willy nilly" can be injurious to the overall sound quality. I know people who bypass output coupling caps (have even done it myself) and they claim it makes a "difference"... of COURSE it makes an audible difference, they have just added extra capacitors to the signal path! They don't seem to grasp that the "difference" is just that (a difference) it's not an improvement! A few years ago I extensively studied the effects of bypass caps with my ears and soon learnt what sounded best and where.... At first (MANY years ago) I would bypass everything and then wonder why the amp sounded like turd.... I then started "auditioning" each and every cap I added to the circuit and took notes... it soon became evident that the holus bolus approach was NOT the way to go... they say that less is more, this is particularly true in this case. Don't get me wrong, some amps do benefit sonically from the electrolytics being bypassed but the ones I have been involved with have sounded better with no (or minimal, selective) bypassing. I recently started experimenting (again) with the X-10V3 buffer and have found that it benefits immensly with the power caps bypassed (1000uF / 1uF ratio)... it's not imaginary either, I have had many emails from X-10V3 owners who think I am a magician, they can't believe the sound quality etc... All to do with the choice of caps and selective bypassing, no magic, just trial and error over many years. Most modern electrolytics don't require bypassing "technically" BUT (and it's a big but) all capacitors have their own unique "house sound" and bypassing with select (carefully chosen) film caps can change that house signature into something more suitable to your ears. I know that Leo doesn't like the Nichicon house sound (I do) but it is possible to alter that house sound by the addition of, for example, a WIMA or an EVOX... you can also "fine tune" by adding more than one bypass cap but (as you know) this takes years of experience / years of trial and error to perfect.... I sometimes laugh when I read people's reports of "I fitted black gates in the amp and bypassed them with $$$ film caps, it doesn't sound too good but I have been told that black gates take a year to burn in" etc. etc. Absolute BUNKUM!!!! These people are ruining the sound quality by throwing these caps in (holus bolus).... you have to go on a "one by one" basis.... add one, take notes, add another, take notes... to simply throw in a handful of "boutique" caps is asking for trouble. I know you won't agree Frans as you believe a cap is a cap in the same way that other people believe a pea is a pea BUT (again, it is a BIG but) I have done a lot of "eartime" listening to a truckload of different caps and can assure you that it WILL do harm (sonically) if you bypass everything with gay abandon. The Project Sunrise is a fantastic amp and an absolute DREAM if you want to experiment with bypassing and try different types / values of film cap... it's pretty much a year long job if you are experimenting with an amp like the WNA MKlll (as there are so many caps!) but the Project Sunrise only has a few, you have good access to the bottom of the board and can roll film caps until you're blue in the face. As always, use your ears.... if it sounds like a backward step it's a simple case of removing and trying another brand / value. I generally go for the 1000 to 1 ratio (ie: a 1000uF electrolytic I will bypass with a 1uF).... you can then fine tune with multicaps using the same ratio but remember you will then be tuning down from 1uF to 100nF to 1000pF etc.... It really is great fun, it is worth doing and it pays dividends but please do it correctly and don't just bypass for bypass sake.... you may regret it
