Leo - I'm really interested in your views on this and how it compares to the QA-550 as a "transport".

Leo - I'm really interested in your views on this and how it compares to the QA-550 as a "transport". A few DIYAudio members are also interested in Leo's reports, especially as he has some rather high quality DACs at his disposal for comparison purposes, as well as some decent ancillary equipment.

Should be with Leo tomorrow I would have reviewed it myself but am happy with CDP as source.... it's simple (put the CD in the tray and hit play).... I can't be doing with all the associated stress and "work" of computer as source... way too many variables involved for my liking Look forward to your impressions leo

You don't realise how much you rely on the main pc do you ? this is when a CDP is better than using a pc for keeping your music collection on. I'll hopefully get something sorted over the weekend

I agree with Mike about CD's. I was taken with the QA550 however. It was a simple case of putting the tracks onto an SD card in WAV format. Once on, I treated the card as a CD. The QA-550 is without doubt the best source I have heard. I am interested in the Mini Ape for the SD input and the menu.
I have a few USB sources (a Burr Brown & Poppulse units) and neither match up to the quality of a good Cd transport (or player).

USB sources are usually mediocre due to the PC's noisy +5V SMPS, which is why quite a few people use the J.K. modded HiFace with it's special Lithium battery supply. Alex

I have been in love with the QA350 for some time, but have not yet pushed the buy now, would you recommend it ?? Most my listening is digital, but my pc is not the best source and the QA seems like a cheap upgrade and 8 GB holds 11 CDs and are more durable and smaller than my CDs who are collecting a nice cover of protective dust ;D

Claus When using this device, that will still be your limitation unless you improve the quality of your ripped files .It can only be as good as the quality of the files that you copy to it. Alex

Claus I will admit to being tempted by the Mini Ape too, but I will wait until I carefully read Leo's reports first, as I am presently getting very good playback from the WD TV Live HD Media player and USB memory sticks, although it is of course not portable, and still requires a minimum of a headphone amplifier. It is presently available here for as little as AU$99. Alex

Yeh, I've been waiting for a graphics card for a week now.... they must have one helluva backlog I've just got a letter from Nottingham that was the official notification of them giving me a university offer. Since I was told electronically that they'd given me an offer some time ago, I thought it was bit odd to be sending this now. The date stamp said it'd been posted on the 13th of December. A month for a medium box from China maybe, but nearly as long for a thin letter from Nottingham is just bullshit. The backlog must really be pretty awful. I'm quite interested in some impressions on this, so I hope Leo gets it soon. -JoetheArachnid

In Australia we have heaps of Jaycar stores for Electronics,Altronics over the counter in Sydney , Melbourne and Perth (kits too) , Element 14 (Farnell) and RS (free next day delivery for online orders) and others. In Sydney we have PC shops with such stuff over the counter, even a computer fair on the weekend in the grounds of a high school. Then there are quite a few online suppliers that are usually pretty prompt too. Alex
