Buffy the Panda Player in his new home. (Panda 2) A super match with the K701. Never heard the AKG sound as good from any other amp. (Although the plug going in to the amp is the HD600)

Fresh air. It's just posing!! I thought it may be an antique table or something (maybe a "chest") hell, it could even be a large banana box, you just can't tell with that cloth covering it. Nice bit of cloth though, is that a celtic pattern on it?

Nice bit of cloth though, is that a celtic pattern on it? It may well be a Celtic thing or Greek/Turkish. I'm not sure. I'd have to ask the wife. It just soaks up tea when I spill it!!

That's the problem with women.... they're always draping "cloth" over things so you never get to see the furniture... bloomin' cushions, drapes, frilly things.... dust traps if you ask me!

Thanks, Mike. I enjoyed the build and especially so because it worked! I haven’t spent a great deal of time listening to it yet and I always have difficulty describing the ‘sound’ of amps/speakers/headphones – but here goes. What strikes me about the Panda/DT770 combination is that the sound is energetic and ‘bouncy’ almost elastic sounding but still fairly well controlled. Dynamic – I guess. Loads of bass – perhaps a bit plummy but I suspect that’s down to the cans. Compared to the X-CAN V2 (now likely to be relegated to office duties ) it is in a different league with much greater depth, resolution and a richer effortless sound – at least with the music I listen to (mostly electronic). I find excessive treble fatiguing but the Panda/770 combo has smooth, pleasing highs - no complaints there. I only have one pair of cans at the moment so I’m a bit limited by their signature. However, I’m very pleased with what I’m hearing and hopefully I’ll get some time to give it a good workout. ‘Er indoors (sorry, Santa) is getting me a pair of AKG 702s for Christmas so I’ll have a different point of reference and some respite from the bass!

Superb build Mike, Those photo`s would not go a miss as an advertising feature for any "Big Name`s" new Amp product launch, in fact, they are a lot better than most i have seen, real professional standard, and probably better sounding than most of the Big Names can produce also. Good effort, very well done.

Looking at these pictures, one thing strikes me as odd. I wonder why the circuit board designer put the AC inlet at the front of the board? If it had been at the back, the output leads from the transformer wouldn't be right next to the headphone output and it would have made it easier to connect up, especially when housed in a long, narrow case.

The signal levels on the output side of the board are relatively high and the output impedance is close to 0 Ohm. The chances of indution of hum or unfiltered nasties on the mains are (close to?) zero. Personally I would worry more about the proximity of the transformer to the input side of the board and the usage of non-shielded wiring from the input RCA's to the board in the standard Panda enclosure. Not meaning the short input wiring on Panda 3 that is far away from the transformer. In these conditions screened wire is NOT needed at all. A construction as in Panda 3 is as close as optimal you can get. Toroids, however, do not exhibit much stray magnetic fields like normal transformers do. Wires from the board to the HP socket can be unshielded. The ground wire to the HP socket should be thick (low resistance) If you want to minimize the risk of hum induction due to mains or secondary voltages from the transformer is to twist the AC carrying wires. The only (illogical) reason could be the position of the power switch which is right next to the AC inlets on the board. Perhaps they figured an external power supply would be used or the switch was intended to switch the 2 secondary windings that go on the corner-connections of the board and the primary is always connected to the board. The 2 middle winding connections (ground) are always connected and must not be switched. (This reply should belong in the Panda build thread and not in the show the build thread)

I find that very stupid also, power and RCA should be at the opposite side of the output..

I take the point mentioned here, but has anybody actually found the present layout of the PCB detrimental to the SQ of this build, i don`t think so thus far, in fact i think that this is the most "deadly quiet Amp" through the HP`s that i have come across in a long while. Mick. PS. sorry i know this is not the correct thread to be discussing this topic, but how do i move it!!.

Some lovely tidy builds here, but must admit to being partial to the modushop cases. Mike, the toggle switch looks just the job, would you share where you got it from?
