Genesis 1999. The last recording that Genesis made in the studio. The original 5 got together and although it's retrospective and old stuff, the sound of this band just take me back to the 70's. Gabriel is imo better than he was and I'm listening to something from the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Those old analogue sounds and the pure dynamic and emotion of the playing just makes me want to go back to the 70's. Such a gorgeous sounding band and on modern equipment, we hear them like we never have. I'm not a great fan of Tony Banks but in this band, he just uses beautiful sounds that always bring back memories for me. I'm also listening to some live mixes from the 70's. A bit rough on the edges, but the 'time' is there in the sound. Modern electronic music has something missing from it for me and I have lost interest since it seems to have become a genre, taken over by computer whizz kids who patch a load of sounds together for an 'impressive' effect, but it just doesn't have the guts of what I hear in early Genesis. I know that a lot of people think that Genesis stopped with Gabriel's exit, but I absolutely love 'Trick of the Tail'. Just having a Genesis hour with so many memories flooding back. I met them backstage at Wembley during their 'Invisible Touch' tour and loved Chester Thompson. A great character with great wisdom and insight into music. (He played with Zappa's band at one time too), but he's like the 'ignored' part of the post Gabriel Genesis because we all seem to focus on Gabriel's exit. However, there was still life after him imo. All bands need to change and I just love their output. Live stuff is superb. They play around and take chances. Love it!! Phil Collins isn't so fit nowadays and is not able to play properly which is such a pity. Carpet Crawlers 1999 (simple but emotional), Fading Lights (Studio version with Tony on a Korg Wavestation), Lamb Lies Down and Trick of the Tail. Superb stuff. Ian

Ian,
By 1999 do you mean "Turn It On Again"?
Trick Of The Tail was indeed very good, as was Wind And Wuthering and the later "Genesis" (Mama etc.). Less keen on others though.
The last I heard Phil was unable to play drums or piano, has he had any improvement more recently?

No Chris. Not greatly improved unfortunately. Doesn't help to have lost the wife, either. He has a house in ,Switzerland, Norfolk (Near Kings Lynn) and New York (I think). He had to pay a lot out in settlements but has a young family with his now ex-wife in Switzerland. 1999 is just a batch of live/studio stuff that I was listening to. They performed as an original 5 then and that was really the end. Hearing Gabriel back with his more mature voice was kind of strange but he still has that 'theatrical' touch in his vocal style that Phil kind of lacked in many songs. although I like some of the stuff from 'Genesis' with Home by the Sea on it. Invisible Touch was a bit pappy for me but then again, who am I to talk? Market forces and the huge lever a company forces on bands is a difficult fight. Something we don't tend to do as listeners is to guage who the target audience is for the stuff we're listening to and then condemn it. The older I get, the worse I am at this - especially with electronic music which just doesn't do anything for me any more. Computerised sounds that aren't really played by anyone - it kind of turns me off, but the 'target audience' love it!! (So it hits the spot for them) It's just the sound that brings back so many memories. I'm not that fussed about Tony's keyboard work and at times, it's technically not that good imo. On the live stuff I was listening to, he was distinctly uneven on a solo section where he's right up front of the mix. (It's all in semi-quavers but uneven and sounds like he's struggling) I'm not sure it's been released - it's just the sound that kind of wells me up with memories. Mind you, I was listening to a live version of Tarkus by ELP and that is really powerful - didn't like the LP that much although I really admire Keith Emerson a lot. Tarkus 'live' is just more alive and dynamic. Again, I'm not sure if it was released. The gear we're listening on now is SO advanced in comparison to the 70's that this early stuff seems to jump back at you with such force that it becomes even more powerful than we first heard it. The sheer weight and dynamics on the Genesis stuff on modern gear is a totally different thing to what I remember and the way that we can now easily hear right into the mix does bring a lot more of the subtleties to the front that I wasn't aware of as a kid. (Well, a kid of 20) Genesis were so unique though. Ian

Shame about Phil, I heard about the wife thing too.
I did a quick search for the recording you mentioned, the only direct and useful information I found was...
I'll have to hunt down Tarkus Live, I agree the studio version is a little under whelming.

I think that's the recording I'm talking about, Chris. Funny that a lot of their stuff relies on the recording quality and the way it was recorded as well.
Chris - check your hotmail. Don't know if it worked. See what you get!!

This is a translation of the Betty Midler song 'The rose' an absolute tearjerker both by Bette Midler and Ann Christy. Also an absolute classic in Dutch.
Have a listen, I hope that the fact that it's in Dutch isn't a showstopper. I think this version is as the lyrics suggest: very fragile. Better than the original song. Must be recorded end 70's or early 80's. She died in '84.
Don't mind the cheesy vid, it had the best audio quality i could find on youtube.

Where can I find a copy of that cd or hirez, if possible? Thanks.

I put a Karmakanic album on to wear in the new Superlux HD681B and it was so good, I had to listen!!
'Entering the Spectra'. American sound from a Swedish group but full of stunt stuff.
This is One Whole Half.

Here, this Bluray: Ah, found 2 correct videos for the bluray here: Btw, where is this O2 auditorium for concerts in London? Along Victoria Street?

Just listened when searching for DM: Really quite tasteful. Some of these hybrids sounded more interesting than the original!

The Verve's album "A Storm In Heaven", an old favourite of mine. Nick MacCabe was very impressive.

I've had reason to take a fresh look at certain parts of my CD collection of late. The collection being scattered in various boxes after the last move.
I was delving into a box I had marked "Move on?". Amoungst a few dreadful (to me) albums that certainly will be moved on I've found the odd gem.
Probably down to changing tastes and moods. One thing is for sure, the heavy end of my spectrum seems to be reaching further into the darkness!
Anyhoosen, here's one that I've really got into after originally disliking.
System Of a Down "Hypnotize" . A mix of metal, punk and ?...
