tonight if I go home early. Hi Mike, Have you compared your SACD with the MFSL CD? Thanks. Hi Chong, I only have the SACD (deluxe edition) it's pretty good quality in places. Do you have the mobile fidelity recording? Yes, I still have the MFSL version of TOMMY. I can't remember whether I still have the normal version or sold it but the MFSL is airier with better space defination. The normal version, as usual, has more "balls" but lesser definition and details. I have always been trying to hear the SACD layer of that discs but so far unsuccessful. Your sound description is the SACD layer or CD layer? Thanks.

You can hear every part of the recording and you can tell they were in seperate booths on some of the tracks... the SACD version really does expose a lot of info.

This gives me motivation to look out for the SACD now for completeness.

I was hunting around for new music for background at the restaurant and found this. Not so much the music or the SQ (karaoke version) BUT, what a cool name for a band!

The only SACD player I have is my NAD T-585 and it does a really fine job (it's a multiplayer).... got it for the crazy price of £199!

So playing SACD and DVD-A is not a problem for me. Yes, I'm looking for the hybrid SACD Tommy disc for completeness since I already have the MFSL CD of that title.

Chong I have a Pioneer 667A Universal player , but they are pretty lightweight compared to what you can get from ripped DVD-A via a PC setup. I obviously can't rip SACD, but SACD playback is pretty average too. Alex

I have been eyeing an Esoteric for a long long time since my friend sold it some years back without telling me for about 1/2 to 3/4 price of a new. Damn it! Personally, I prefer the sound of DVD-A over SACD as it sounds more like the live event. Of course, if we wanted the usual hifi definitions of sound like soundstage, depth, etc, the SACD has an advantage over DVD-A. But true to the original sound of live, DVD-A anytime.

I have always enjoyed the character of SACD - just like it somehow. I have 4 SACD players..
Denon DVD-2900 Sony SCD-XE670 Denon DVD-1930 Pioneer DV-575A
The top two do not convert SACD to PCM. And it shows in the sophisticated sound the two machines produce.

If we are talking of to the analog output of the player, all do not convert to PCM but direct from SACD. If we are talking about digital output like coaxial and toslink, yes possible. Some players will convert SACD to PCM and some will not and we will have no signal from the digital output. This because this SPDIF digital output is only PCM. However, if we talk of the latest HDMI that output SACD signal (DSD), then again there will be no conversion. However, not all players will output DSD though and this is where the conversion will come in again to PCM. Some players have options to convert or not.

Your not wrong there, Phil!
I get quite a lot out of that particular track, very soothing. In fact, the whole album is pretty perfect, musically, for this type of music.
I really do need to have a listen to his other stuff.

I mean internally - as part of the digital to analogue conversion - if I undertsand correctly some (most?) DSD compatible convertors translate the DSD data stream into PCM. Someone who understands better than I could help out here? Derek
