I've had a couple of instances in the past year where customers sent their Pinkies back and it turns out the internal fuse had blown (not a fault with the Pinkie I may add!) so to save any future returns to base I have decided to incorporate a user replaceable fuseholder on the rear panel.... all Pinkies will now ship with these fitted....

Yes, a good idea. Short term mains surges can occurr. Guys Just make sure that you use a fuse of the same rating as the one that Mike has fitted. DO NOT FIT A HIGHER RATED FUSE JUST BECAUSE THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE, THEN FORGET ABOUT GETTING THE CORRECT FUSE. Alex

DO NOT FIT A HIGHER RATED FUSE JUST BECAUSE THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE, THEN FORGET ABOUT GETTING THE CORRECT FUSE. Alex An EPCOS 275V varistor is now fitted across the input as standard Alex which will, hopefully, handle surges... I still fit the EVOX 470nF class X2 caps and run a few ferrite beads over the output wires. Mechanical hum is the latest thing I have decided to fight and the laminations are to be impregnated with varnish.... again, a couple of hummy Pinkie's have found their way out there and, even though it's barely audible, a couple of customers have had their ears on the Pinkie expecting TOTAL silence.... We all know that the laminations can vibrate and this is not "audible" as far as the music is concerned.... it's not a fault, just the nature of the transformer.... I have been assured that the varnishing process will all but eliminate this so those listeners who prefer to stick their ear on the PSU rather than listen to music will be satisfied I'll tell you Alex, it's been a long road getting the Pinkie to where it is.... it may just "look" like a little plastic box but it has been a labour of love (and patience) fine tuning it.... The transformer company I am using now are totally "in tune" with me and know what type of quality I expect.... it's been a long road, with many twist and turns, but it's been worth it as the latest Pinkie is pretty much bullet proof The fuse, by the way, is a slow blow 20mm / 250mA type (250mA T )

That is a very nice man-cave you have there. Living in an apartment does not allow anything like it, but we have bikini babes all over the place! I wish it was a "cave" mate! What you see above is only a small corner of a large workshop... it's where I go to get warm when the north winds blow Shouldn't be too bad this winter though as I've bought a nice paraffin heater to keep me warm

I am happy to report the latest batch of heavily varnished transformers are as quiet as a mouse They "sound" exactly the same but the very slight mechanical hum is all but gone. So happy am I now with where the Pinkies are (in terms of parts quality, build quality etc.) I have decided to increase the warranty from 1 year to 2 years.... I am confident they will give reliable service for many many years after the warranty period has expired. Top quality, custom wound and hand varnished transformers, EPCOS MOV varistors, EVOX / Rifa class X2 caps, ALPHA 600V rated internal wiring, Evolution Pro output cables, Neutrik DIN plugs, Schurter IEC sockets, Schurter chassis mount fuseholders, Schaffner ferrite beads, silver loaded solder, SCI rocker switch, Anixter nylon nuts / bolts, 3M feet.... all the best of stuff So, 2 year warranty it now is

Hi,
I have just joined this forum as a result of buying an X CAN V3. I am considering getting it modded by pinkfloyd and also getting a 3i power supply too. I have had a number of headamps in the past including GS SOLO SRG w PSU1 and a Little Dot Mk3, but was blown away after trying a V3 with pinkfloyd mods.

I have a new V8 and the Little Pinkie plus a change of valves made it really take off. Check out Mike's valves. I would go with both the Pinkie and some valves. He knows his stuff. It was my birthday a few days back and my wife had no idea what to get me. She just couldn't understand why I wanted a little black box so much and why I raved about it when it arrived!! Put your trust in Mike and he will make the V3 sing. Ian

Ade Hi Ade, Glad you like it The V3 is a lovely amp and capable of producing truly breathtaking musical reproduction, I really don't know why the "mags" make so much of the GS amp and so little of the MF headphone amps, I can only assume some form of bribery, prejudice or "deafness" is taking place because the MF amps are far superior IMO..... the GS amp is pretty much in the dark ages, both technically and sonically, compared to the V3 (and the V2 and V1 for that matter)..... oh well, each to their own...... My money would go on the MF headphone amps any day.

Mike, My Brand new MF V-DAC was kept unused for several weeks as never connected with it's supplied wall wart psu till I get the Little Pinkie! I was waiting patiently!!. Then now my V-DAC''s bloodstream is only supplied by the Pinkie! So,My V-DAC is born with the Silver Spoon! The cooking is on the low flame, so that the dish will come out(after the break in)as delicious as mouth watering! I hope so. Let me see. The nice phtographs of your workshop with Disciplined Armaments with which you are discharging your efforts and are being accredited! Carry on Mike! regards.

A few different Pinkies in the process of being made (Pinkie V, Pinkie V3i, Pinkie V3i 12V.... all now feature varnished transformer laminations, EPCOS MOV varistor inlet suppression, EVOX class X2 suppression and output leads laced with ferrite bead inductors.... internal wiring is high quality ALPHA 600V rated.

Mike, does the lastest LPV3i bring more sound improvement compared to the earlier vision?

Yep, like Miguel I have an older one and a new one. The newer ones most obvious improvement is digging a little deeper into bass information and presenting it with greater authority.
I have not finalised my findings on the rest of the spectrum as yet, certainly zero negatives.

Chris Have you done a series of Double Blind Tests to make sure that you aren't imagining those differences ? Alex P.S. I believe you , but some of the closed minded members of some other forums wouldn't ! That applies to you too, mrarroyo !

However I do need to blind test myself on the rest of the spectrum, hence my comment there. Chris

Mike very kindly sent me some larger output caps and diode bypass caps for the psu in my xcanv2.
The improvement, despite Mike's very conservative assessment, is very audible as an extra solidity and pace, variation of tone in bass notes is more evident too.
I tried swapping back to the older pinkie, I estimate this removed half of the effect.
So I'd conclude if you go for a new pinkie do this other mod too.
Both, especially together, are very worthwhile.
Chris

New labels for 2010 To save money (and to keep true to the "handmade" nature of the Pinkie) I make these myself and print them out on glossy photo paper. They are fixed into position with double sided tape and then covered with high quality sellotape to protect them. Mike Re the new label : Cheeky bugger ! Alex

A couple of years ago I made a "special edition" Pinkie in a nifty looking grey enclosure: I have taken delivery of a further 50 of these enclosures and have decided to make another limited edition run of 50 of these PSU's. They will differ to the ones shown above in that they will feature the circular rocker switch featured on the standard Pinkies.... the output lead will be fixed (Evolution Pro OFC cable) and the IEC inlet socket will be a 24K gold plated IeGo type. The main difference will be under the bonnet with high quality PTFE wiring (silver-plated copper stranded), varnish dipped transformer, EPCOS MOV, EVOX class X2 filter cap and top quality silver loaded solder. They will be available with 12VAC / 12V DC or 24VDC outputs..... Each Pinkie will come with it's own certificate (personally signed) more details to follow
