Mike You are already on a winning formula. Go by your gut instincts, and your ears. Personally, I like the way they have evolved. ;D Alex Alex so you like the way Mikes ears have evolved?

Now comes with a choice of either red or blue Evolution XPC PROFESSIONAL oxygen free cable I'm going to pull the boat out and order a 500 metre reel of black Evolution XPC PROFESSIONAL too so that will give the choice of red, black or blue I'm also fitting different type of feet now.... The ones I were using shifted position after a while (due to the heat at the base of the PSU) but these new ones stay put no matter how warm the PSU gets. The fusing system has also changed... I now adopt a high quality 5 amp rated in-line fuseholder incorporating a white polypropylene two part connector with a twist action assembly (20AWG red insulated wire / Tin plated brass terminals) with a user replaceable 125mA (250mA for US voltage) time delay fuse.

By the way.... I'd like to point out something Syd said (Juke) when he took delivery of his Pinkie.... "The 'Little Pinkie' is actually more substantial looking than I imagined, you need to emphasise that when publicising IMHO. I was picturing a little box like the sort of in-line types come with a few things that aren't wall-warted."Well, yes...... it's not "tiny" but, then again it's far from large.... maybe I should have called it a "medium" Pinkie.... nah, that doesn't sound right It weighs nigh on a kilogram so it's NOT the size of a postage stamp but it is still "little" in the scheme of things.... weighs around the same as a bag of sugar and is about the same size as 4 "fun sized" bananas stacked together

Now available in red, blue or black Evolution OFC output cable! The bases of the Evatron enclosures were getting a bit warm where the transformer was mounted (not a biggie as the enclosures are 130C temp. rated) so I will now be incorporating a piece of FR4 laminate between transformer and enclosure base.

Miguel Seeing Mike may be in the land of Nod, I will reply. "FR4 is a glass fiber epoxy laminate. It is the most commonly used PCB material. 1.60mm FR4 uses 8 layers of (7628) glassfiber material. ..."

In this incarnation all it is doing is providing a barrier between the base of the transformer and the ABS enclosure.... it ensures that the enclosure remains cool to the touch.... I am also going to start using UL94V-2 rated M4 nylon nuts and bolts to mount the transformer so no heat is transfered through the screws. When I'm up to speed with my backlog I'll build you one of the new ones with the chassis mount transformer Miguel.... let me know what you think Juke mentioned that he was surprised by the size of the Pinkie, he thought it was a lot smaller than it actually is so I have taken a couple of pics of one beside an X-Can V2 to give a better idea of the size:

Cool Mike, btw I have the HD ready and should ship it out this coming week. That is excellent Miguel, it will give me something to listen to when I come out of hospital (going in for an operation next Friday) hopefully the amp with USB DAC will arrive at the same time

Hope the surgery is minor and everything comes out ok. Best of luck. Just veins mate ;D Not as "minor" an op as I was led to believe but I'll soon be dancing again Still here, yup Miguel, I am currently evaluating a new prototype transformer ( made to my requirements ) and I would like your opinion of it so, if you don't mind, I will build a Little Pinkie for your X-Can V2 and ship it to you...... The new transformer is 30% larger than the existing one and weighs a KILO.... it is wound by hand in the UK and outputs almost 40VA... Let me know what you think of it compared to your exsisting Little Pinkie

I'll be making it tomorrow Miguel, complete with new addition of EPCOS surge protector (results in a more stable mains supply to the transformer providing a much quieter noise floor) Things are getting VERY tight inside the Evatron enclosure with this new "bigger" transformer with only millimetres to spare in places so the enclosure is pretty much "maxed out"...... Sound quality of these new transformers? I won't say a word, you tell me what you think

Mike, are they RR core? Or? Which sec. VAC windings they have?

Excellent, that didn't take too long to arrive Did you notice a weight difference between this one and your other one? The new "bigger" transformers add a few hundred grams to the weight. It won't need much burn in Miguel

I've decided to go with these new transformers as I feel they are better built overall.... every Pinkie from here on in will have them fitted. They are slightly more expensive so there will be a price change shortly to reflect the added parts cost..... In fact, all of the components used in the Pinkie have seen a price hike in the last few months so I reckon I'll have to end up adding between 10%-15% onto the price of the Pinkie.
Mike.

A large batch of the new transformers are on their way Manufactured in England by VTX..... they have a double section fully shrouded bobbin construction with impregnated varnish coating which ensures they are pretty much noise free mechanically..... the best transformers I have used to date

That's the way to do it Miguel, 1/8th of an inch is good. Don't worry about glueing the cap, it will be fine..... You could always glue it onto the adjacent cap with a drop of super glue if you feel paranoid...... Notice any difference to the SQ with 1000uf?

Yes, get a decent solid state amp instead ! Perhaps something like the big Class A mentioned in the post about driving Senns ?

Not only do they rock, but their internal electrodes vibrate in time to the music too !

Alex, no amp can help the Senn cans! The HD580/600/650 sounds bad regardless. Did I mention tubes rock! Mike, the V2 sure sounds better! Between the new Little Pinkie and the 1000 uF I am very happy indeed. It is a pity there are so many snubs out there, they should give the V2 or the V1 a chance. Indeed. I am going to send you a 3.3uF film cap and want you to fit it in place of the 470nF (blue cap) that sits directly adjacent to the DC input on the PSU board..... IMO this brings about even further improvements..... let me know what you think

Between the new Little Pinkie and the 1000 uF I am very happy indeed. I have been making these for a few years now and am convinced it's not about the "type" of transformer used but the "quality" of said transformer that makes the difference. The company who I am now employing to make the "engines" for the Pinkies are well aware the transformers are intended for audio use and the quality control / materials are first class.... custom wound in the UK to very demanding standards...... I started off years ago using "off the shelf" transformers but soon found they lacked consistency, some of them measuring up wrong, others going into meltdown and some of them mechanically noisy..... you get what you pay for and if you want consistency and quality you've got to go down the tailor made route to "your" specifications... it may be a bit more expensive to go down that avenue but well worth it in the long run! I came home today and there was a big box of 100 freshly made transformers awaiting me.... you could smell the varnish the minute the box was opened.... each and every one of them built to perfection.... that's what I expect and that's what you get if you pay a little bit more and demand the best Totally agree..... the V1 / V2 are classics and do the same, if not better, job than "any" headphone amp out there and in most cases do a better job.... good to go for at least another 20 years IMO, you can't re-invent the wheel (at the present moment as far as amplification is concerned) so it's very hard to actually "better" the V1 / V2.....

Look forward to installing that new cap Mike, thanks. I will ship everything on Friday Miguel.... you fit the RED 3.3uF cap where the 470nF (blue) film cap resides..... There are "4" solder pads at this position, fit the RED cap on the two inner pads.... Mike.
