make a tread+toroid power supply (will a tread work?) Only if it outputs 12V "AC"

Hi Mike, I would like to thank you for the great job you made on my X-CANv2. I simply love the way it sounds with my hd650!! Thank you Gianluca Hi Gianluca, I was beginning to wonder if you'd received her back.... thanks for posting Glad you like the transformation, as with all X-CAN v2's which have been modded expect the sound to get even better over a period of about 500 hours. How long have you had her powered up since receiving her back in Paris? All the best. Mike.

Hi Mike,
I have her powered since i received, maybe 4 days. it already sounds better than my darkvoice 336i with the sylvania 6SN7W metal base and the RCA 6AS7GT grey plates. I tryed the K1000 too and I think it's not so bad, but I'm still looking for a better amp for this headphone.
All the best
Gianluca

Hi everyone, new to the forum, been reading posts for a few days now and decided that it was time to register. I changed to Mullard E88CC tubes 4 years ago after reading "X-CAN V2 Valve Audition " and since then i was hooked on tweaks.
A question to those with modded X-can V2's, primary the change given by "X-Can V2 upgrade kit now available".
How, in which way do you belive the sound has change (if it has at all), meatier bass, sweeter highs, more detail and so on?
As i said above i got the Mullard tubes and i'm thinking of sending the V2 to Mike for a full mod and just want to check in which direction (feel) the sound will go.

Hi Benke, Welcome to the forum your question is not one I would like to answer as doing so would be blowing my own trumpet and I don't like doing that...... I'm sure others will chip in and give their impressions before / after the mods. I still perform the mods because I feel they work wonders, if I didn't I certainly wouldn't be wasting my time, and other people's money, doing them...... Hopefully someone will chip in here with an independent opinion I don't publish personal feedback in a "testimonial" style, never have / never will.... each X-Canv2 / v3 I mod is kept personal and I work on it as if it were my own

Hi Benke, Started myself with tubes, rolled two-three pairs until Ian kindly spared me a couple of his fabulous 6922's... I was surprised by the change and that incited my curiosity for other tweaks. In my opinion, you should definitely try a PSU electrolytic capacitors change (which turns music body into Music Body), get rid of input capacitors (which rediscovered highs) and change output capacitors for 1000uF non-polar ones (which ads and tightens the base even for low impedance phones). Ultrafast diodes do their part too (V2 responses "faster" and more precise to the feeded music). As for the various bypasses - matter of personal taste (I like them and recommend them, Mike likes them less lately)... Heck, you should try everything that is included in Mike's kit... If you are not handy with soldering iron (neither was I, but it did not stop me;) - he will do it for you for a really reasonable amount of money (and modding of your V2 will be documented in this very thread). So, to put it in just few words: Just do it. V3P.S. Oh, yes... do not forget to get rid of the standard wallwart - a good improvement by itself is just to feed your V2 with 1,5-2 A instead of 0,5 A of required 12 V AC. P.P.S. Mike, we can talk about my fee later...

Cheeky bugger ! What fee ? Mike should charge YOU for all the recommendations he has already made. other than (perhaps?) getting rid of the input capacitors, which are often there for a damn good reason. The designer of the equipment HAS to put them there in case of a DC component coming from the source equipment. Electrolytic coupling capacitors, even non polar types have been known to exhibit leakage. All the other suggested mods have been done many times over by Mike and other forum members. BTW, Mike accepts Paypal, cash, and bottles of wine. SandyK

Removing the input caps isn't anything new, have been waffling on about them for years.... first time I removed them was around about 1997 on a v2. If you're sure there's no DC at your source outputs then remove them... same goes with the v3 www.rock-grotto.co.uk/x-can-v3-tweaks.htm

I'm not against removing input capacitors, I am suggesting though, that you be sure there is no DC coming out of the previous component. FTR, my solid state preamplifier is completely DC coupled. i.e. No input or output capacitors. It does sound better. My amplifier, however, does have a quality polypropylene capacitor in the input, just to be on the safe side. That way, in the unlikely event that the preamp blows up, the Power amplifier should still be O.K. SandyK

well got these back initially mistakenly used an acoustic zen krakatoa power cord for the x-psu driving the x-10d's, a mistake, as well OTT for the purpose , created a muddy 'dark chocolate' (Naim?) kind of sound, 10 days later tried a much cheaper silver-copper cable into the X-PSU instead, much better, these modded x-10ds transformed cd playback, which is a complicated CD transport>Trichord jitter reducer>Electrocomp. DAC arrangement, with the x-10D in the chain (last) vastly improved on the sound much more immediate silky better soundstage much more 'present' & expressive, vocals in the room - many thanks v grateful had 2 x-10d's that were basically fu***** & Musical Fidelity said they were uneconomical to repair when i took them in with an A1000 that needed repair - had them transformed by Pinkie, well worthwhile! Modded X-10D sits between DAC outputs & Integrated amp, X-10D now used for TV & radio via DAC through Sony freeview set top box with optical out, & DVD Player digital outs for movies (modded x-10d has great effect for movie sound) & music : everything is basically 'pinkified' ! havent put back in cases yet so may have to send them back again soon! many thx! david

No glue? What are the white circles on the board for? Felt pads Miguel...... won't do any damage and every little bit of damping helps No glue "yet" I haven't finished testing this one.

Miguel The pictures were fine last night, and still are this morning, at my end. Certainly not your amplifier ! Does yours use 80s and 5Y3 s ? They glow better ! Alex

29th March 2008 - Stephen Lamb's X-Can v2 Panasonic FM, EVOX Rifa, Samwha VA, ELNA RE2, UF4007 ultrafast diodes, 470uF output caps, input caps removed 24K gold plated jumpers fitted, Russian 6H23N (1984), new ALPS pot, purple LED, Jalco pro socket and fluted black knob. Had to funky angle the EVOX cap, the series I ordered are pretty "big"
