Not one for forums usually but I had to post this. I was in a bit of a fix with my X-10D. I had slowly gone through the upgrade process with great results. Unfortunately my last tweak appeared to kill my X-D10. After various searches for help to no avail, or possibility of bankruptcy to get repaired I got in touch with Mike. A great guy, not only full of advice, but prepared to help with the repair. I now await my resuscitated X-10D with great anticipation. Many Thanks : Timd1

Very nice work Mike (as usual). By the way I would like to coordinate upgrading my X-Can V2 by you with the "Full Monty". Will PM you, thanks. One I'm looking forward to doing and one I want to spend some time with

Not an X-ponent but will include it here anyway just to make Fritz jealous Fellow member southpaw didn't have the necessary bits and pieces to cut out the holes on his Hammond so I offered to do them for him. I don't know if I was supposed to wire the amp up at the same time and don't know if I should be sitting here listening to it but, I did and I am I must say I'd forgotten just how good these WNA MKlll's sound, I've messed around a bit with mine but this one sounds just fantastic.... you ain't gonna get this kind of sound on the high street southpaw, of that there's no doubt! This differs slightly to the stock MKlll in that AD-843 are fitted throughout, no input or output caps and a Jalco pro headphone socket fitted in place of that poor fitting "thing" that comes with the kits (so poor in fact it was 10mm away from the edge of the PCB!) Anyways southpaw I'll stop waffling and get her back in the post to you on Monday. I hope you don't mind but I binned that red LED and fitted a clear blue one. The switch you sent was rated at only 12V so I fitted a good quality 230V toggle type on the back, I also fitted on some high quality rubber feet as those things that come with the Hammond are pretty economical looking. All the best. Mike. BTW: Nice soldering on the PCB southpaw A couple of pics of this very rare beauty:

You've done another fine job Mike - can't wait to start listening Not at all southpaw, you did all the hard work soldering the PCB and she fired up first time, so it's you who's done the fine job here All I've done is drill a few holes, connect the inputs up and feed power into her..... I got the easy bit for a change Your MKlll is one of about seven I know of on the planet so you're now part of "team rare WNA" You can't wait to start listening? I don't want to stop listening to your amp! This is like relaxing with a vintage scotch, a rare occurence with me, I really never did get into the MKlll at the time, what with all the fall out after I pulled out of the deal, but this little visitor has got my juices flowing again... BIG time. Pity David's off somewhere writing a book (if you're reading this Snowy, give me ring sometime) I'll send her special delivery Monday. All the best. Mike.

20th October 2006 - Kelvin Chan's X-CAN V2 Bit of a bummer here as my photo card packed in and it was only after I shipped Kelvin's V2 I noticed it so no pics this time (send me some pics of the amp Kelvin and I'll get them up here for you) A mixture of Panasonic FC /FM, Evox polyprop, new 50K ALPS pot, Jalco pro head socket, alu knob, purple LED... pretty much the full monty. I spent 11 hours listening to Floyd through this one so it's got a few hours on the clock Kelvin

I was looking at the specs of Panasonic FC and FM caps the other day; what a wild worlwind existance I lead. ;D
The FMs have a better specification, especially in terms of lifespan, and are often only a couple of pence more than the FCs, for a given capacitance, so why not use FMs all the time?

Quite simply it's a matter of availabilty xerxes. There was a real shortage of FM caps there for a while and they're just now starting to become available again, I've got a load on order as I type this. FM are actually "cheaper" than the FC in certain values and they also come in a smaller package, their lifespan is impressive. A quick comparo between a 35V 1200uF FC and a 35V 1200uF FM: FM: endurance 7000hrs, ripple 3630, impedance 0.013 FC: endurance 5000hrs, ripple 2205, impedance 0.029 Stock Jamicon SK general purpose specs can be seen here: www.jamicon.com.tw/pdf/capacitor/sk.pdfSonically there's not a lot in it between FC / FM, they both have that same liquid, flowing Panasonic house sound but it would be nice if the FM were in stock "all" of the time and not just in short bursts ;D

27th October - Neil Clarke's X-CAN V3 Something a bit different this time and I may add it into the kits as a "turbo" pack considering the extra performance it's squeezed out of this V3. Much the same as usual in that it employs Panasonic FC and FM caps but these have been bypassed with WIMA film caps. I have also bypassed the two 1uF film caps with EXOX polyprops and I do believe, early on into the session, that's there's definitely more warmth to the sound and bass response is absolutely spot on. This could also be partly due to me paralleling 10N ceramics with the diodes or it could be down to the new CapXon audio non polars I'm using. Not night and day better than the stock upgrade kit but enough that I can hear it, albeit subtle. Will keep an ear on these components (in isolation) over the next few weeks and incorporate them into the kit when I'm certain what makes the biggest improvement. I must admit after fitting the caps in parallel with the diodes there was a pronounced improvement in clarity and depth.... interesting. Partnering equipment used to evaluate this V3 has been Marantz CD17KI, Grado SR-225 and Senn HD-600. Power supply, Little Pinkie V3. Valves, 6HP1N-EB. A few pics: Under board bypassing, 'lytics bypassed with film caps and diodes with 10N ceramics in parallel. From another angle RIFA PHE 426, Panasonic 1200uF FM and Panasonic 2200uF's FC 4 x CapXon audio non polars 16V 470uF Another viewpoint And another Brand new gold plated quad phono socket fitted 6H1P-EB valves RIFA PHE 426 Bypassing from a different angle She'll be on her way to you on Monday Neil, I want to spend the weekend listening to her anyway

Its still burining in with my 6N23-EB ;D The music has so much more depth now, little details I never noticed before now just pops out, all my old songs becomes like new songs again, strange yet very enjoyable At the moment I'm looking at some valve selection. I'm quite happy with the 6H23-EB now, but I want to try out different valves, like the Mullard E88CC, or the Reflector 6N23. What do you guys recommend? And most importantly, whats the best site/store I can order these valves from Canada?

Hello everyone - long time lurker - first time poster. Hi Neil, Don't be shy, just spout off a load of crap like the rest of us, Welcome aboard. I'm Neil, the lucky owner of that V3 ^ up there!! I'm Mike, a transexual rastafarian who owns a pink Hitachi hair dryer. Nah not really, just joking..... I do own a pink hair dryer though Looks fantastic Mike - I can't wait to hear it! You'll have a long wait I've decided to keep it Again, joking it'll be back with you on Tuesday. How does it sound with the Grado's? I tried it with the grado's soldered onto the capacitors (Grado bypass) but it didn't sound too good so I tried plugging them in to that socket on the front and, yes, they sound great connected that way. Seriously, nice and liquidy without a trace of the grado "grato" I think you'll like...... won't say anymore or it'll spoil it for you..... you have a listen and then let us know what you think Hope the weathers' calmed down a bit. The pond's gone.... the wind blew it away overnight so not at all bad... just the three hot water bottles on my head at the moment and I've managed to strip a few layers of thermal wadding off my legs so, pretty mild.

spent four hours with the leaf blower yesterday and to say it was pissing me off would be like saying having a 747 land on your head would hurt ! The fkn wind was blowing the leaves behind me so even though I am not the sharpest pencil in the box figured "Hmmmmm.......blowing that way so mebbe I should change direction and go WITH the wind" so I did and to what end ? The FKN WIND CHANGED DIRECTION AS I DID !!!!!! You piss in the wind and you end up with a wet leg Blow leaves on a windy day ? May as well piss on your own leg for all the good you will do ;D

I know this is going WAAAAAAAAAY off topic but blame Mike,he started it guys anyhoo, one of the very cool things about living in New England is the fall foliage which if you never seen it first hand means you have missed out on one of the great natural sights ever.Colors so spectactular you almost with THIS was the natural color of trees.Even on a gloomy day it is like someone turned on the lights because there is a glow that I find soothing realising. But it is all vapor ware,a last gasp before the darkness kind of like how a light bulb will burn its brightest just before going "ping" and then you have what ? DARKNESS ! and that is where this part of the country is headed-the dark days, the gloom and doom where all signs of life are not to be seen with even humans shunning the outdoors unless they must venture forth into the great dark. Right now it is all glorious color but they days are getting shorter, the clocks get turned back to Eastern Standard time from Daylight Savings Time on Sunday and that means NIGHT by 5:00 P.M. so you leave for work it is DARK.You come home from work it is DARK and somehow it all seems like the bears have it more right than humans because they at least have the good sense to take their ass to a cave and sleep until it becomes "bearable (yup, pun intended ) again. I think I may be more bear than human 'cause I am one snarly S.O.B. during the dark months. My nature mirroring the gloom of outside so very hard to live with or be around unless I take "steps" with those steps being I NEED green living things and flowering plants/cut flowers around the house at all times and I MUST be "in the light" with those lights including the same types used to keep reptiles in captivity : UVA,UVB and a mix of "white" and "Yellow" flourescents in an attempt to recreate in house what is no longer available outside-THE FKN SUN DAMMIT !!!!!!!! Yup.winter + rick="look out folks,we're in for a rough ride" Back to the pretties This I beleive.I am in CT and would agree we are in the "peak color" range This one pisses me off and yes,i have to agree again looking at all the leaves still clnging to branches ready to pounce as soon as i look away-invariably ONLY in the areas already cleaned up but the alternative ? won't be long before everything around here is either this color www.praktica-users.com/img/pics/alp_winter_trees.jpgor sh*t brown from road sanding (snow and ice) and then lookout dammit ! Rick will be in the "snarly zone" ready to act like any other bear caught out during the dark months, ready to take a swipe at anyone within reach just because

Get this one Rick, the clocks change tomorrow and very soon it will be dark where I live at 2.15pm in the afternoon and it won't be light again till about 9.30am in the morning. In the summer up here it gets light at about 2:45am and dark at 12:10am so about 3 hours of sleep before being woken up by singing birds.... pretty gloomy winter though

DAAAAAAAAAMN BRO !2 F'in 15 ?!?!?!? I would not last a season dude.More likely would find a cliff to walk off before I totally lost it and went postal on the neighbors.Me and the "dark days" are not exactly bestist buddies as most close to me know and 4:30-5:00 PM is already pushing my personal limits winter sucks unless you are a freakin' polar bear or a skiier neither of which I am....................................... (do a search at headfi on my "so tell me something GOOD about winter" thread )
