I've still got a pair of those boxed / unopened if anybody is interested in owning these rare headphones? Totally kosher / totally pristine.... these are the dog's nads if you're into headphone anniversary 'phones.... you get a free coin inside the box too..... a must have if you're into collecting anniversary type headphones...... they are streets ahead of the standard Porta Pro because they are the anniversary edition.... Koss have sprinkled some real anniversary dust onto them. They have been sitting in a vault for a good few years now so will have matured into Portaporo AEVM (anniversary edition vintage matured).... fully matured with a nutty bite and almost citrus burst flavours culminating in a distinct (yet subtle) stilton like richness with overtones of wild raspberries and tarmac. Make me an offer

No bling bling music coming from these chuck wagons, maybe some Pink Floyd.... "You better run, run, run....."

Ah, I heard this yesterday at the computer show. The usual Senns sound but with a bit "smaller" soundstage when compared to the HD800 or even 650. The clamp on my head was really bad and I don't think I will feel confortable after about 1/2 to 1 hr with it.
Heard also the AT 900AD and the 2000AD. Didn't quite like them as the usual AT high clankinest. I prefer the sound of this Senns over the AT as it's more like Live without the high clankinest. In other words, more of the Live natural signature.

My Amperior is as comfortable as a Senn PX100ii or PX200ii.

I found the following quote on the PC Advisor U.K. site. My first impression of the headphone was something like this, but PC Advisor's words express that impression more eloquently than mine, so I thought I'd repeat it here. It might sound silly, but when I saw this quote it just rang true like they were reading my mind.
"...It's as if the Amperior adds extra emphasis between each layer of sound it delivers..."

Oddly from what I can infer from the review comments, Tyll used the velours on the Amperior and the pleather pads on the HD 25. Given that nearly everyone agrees that the velours improve the sound of the HD 25 it makes me wonder if the differences are that much closer.

And besides the pads, those little dark strips that Tyll pulled out of the Amperior cups - it seems like those too could easily be improvised on the HD25.

BTW, while it seems like Sennheiser is making some genuine improvements and hustling for a lot of extra cash in the process at $350 USD, their marketing is very strange, unless you'd think mailorder Amperiors are making them a pile of money. For instance, the Amperior is exclusive to Apple (bad idea), and each Apple store I've visited has only one, on the rack and not openable for listening. Worst marketing I've ever seen, unless they're moving bunches of them mailorder, which I can't imagine. BTW #2, so far in all the Apple stores I visited (~6) none of the salespeople were aware of the Amperior.

Exclusive to Apple stores? That's why there's a price hike - the store takes a mighty big cut.
If the Amperior went on demo in the stores, my guess is the kids would choose Dre. The Senns are way more balanced sounding but that's not what the wee ones want.
In the UK, two versions of the Dre's dominate the shelves and they have quite a lot generally, so they must be selling.
I think the Amperior might have a tough time in that case.

Your description of the U.K. stores matches the U.S. exactly. Apple is recreating the concept of marching in lockstep with a perfection heretofore unknown.

The Amperior is only 2 the first few months exclusively for Apple. After that it will be available for 'normal' stores as well.

Yup, unless the Amperior draws closer to 250 euros I will ignore it.
For a lot less the less refined HD661 is much more value.
Oh well, time to buy a third K181. (The second one was stolen.)

The Amperior clamped too much? That's odd. My Amperior is as comfortable as a Senn PX100ii or PX200ii. Most probably the one I tried was a new one. I had also tried the Beyer t70p n t50p yesterday and I preferred this Senn. Strange, when I tried the latest Beyer 990 and the 880, I preferred them over the Senn. Although the Beyer have a brighter tonality like the AT, but they didn't have the clanky sound of the AT. The Beyers had pleasant brighter high. The t5p is even more clear than the latest 990 n 880. Obviously, the t5p was in the same sound category as the 990 n 880. I wouldn't consider the t70p n t50p to be good enough for hifi use.

Based on the tests I see of the t5p it looks as though it could sound better than a Senn Amperior. How much better is unknown. The other Beyers I rejected due to brightness peaks that would bother me. Even the minor sibilants of the M50 bother me. So far for highest fi and least irritation I use the Shure 1840. For less fi and better bass, more indulgence, the Amperior. For less fi than that and a better bass yet the vmoda M80 white. If I really want to slum it the PX200ii with EQ sounds really great outdoors, and not too bad indoors when hoovering or running the centrifuges.

I think the Amperior might have a tough time in that case. If the number of Dre's am seeing in my classroom (I teach high school science in the US) is any indication, the Dre's are selling very well and Apple does not need to have any out of box for auditioning. They put them away quickly when I tell them I don't have Dre's in my collection yet. They sound bad even from a distance. The Dre's not my students.

Why hi-fi is complicated: Comparing the $350 USD Amperior to the $700 Shure 1840, the Amperior has the obvious weight or emphasis in the lower midrange, whereas the 1840 is light enough there to have an almost hollow quality (not really hollow, just by comparison). But while the 1840 has an obvious advantage in soundstage (yes?), the Amperior may sound "bigger" because of the extra weight in the lower mids. I was playing Hazel O'Connor's "Will You", which highlights those differences pretty well. This experiment suggests to me that comparing headphones on soundstage may not be so straightforward as some reviews indicate.

To me the best compromise and VFM of all those HPs I had heard is still the Shure 1840. The 1440 is good for rock as they are more forward and have a bigger sound soundstage. Still the 1840 to me is the better of the 2 without the price of the Senn 800.
Btw, Dale, which HP do you prefer of these two? The 1840 or the L1?

The L1 with bass reduction is excellent and offers a good contrast to the 1840. Like the Amperior, the L1 is more full-bodied (for lack of a better term) than the 1840, and if it were as comfortable as the 1840 I would toss the 1840 right now. The L1 sounds more lively than the Amperior, but I can't be sure at this point that it's really a better sound or simply has a stronger treble. Probably the latter, and with the Amperior being far more comfortable and portable, the L1 will remain mostly idle.
