Check the serial number (date ?) on this driver.. (original driver for V6 and 7506) www.fullcompass.com/product/362993.htmlI don't think the driver materials (plastics and metal) will degrade. Well... perhaps if you leave them in full sunlight for a very lengthy period Only foam degrades fast IMO.

Well, there is a touch of 'rigor mortis' in the sound to say the least. 36 hours of burn in and they won't loosen up!!

The MDR V6 was my first headphone. I used to like it but after a while its shortcomings were to apparent to tolerate. I almost found a V7 but missed it by a hair and later tried a CD900 ST.
If you want a proper studio headphone i.m.o. the V6 is not suitable. The CD900 ST on the other hand is really an improvement be it with limited lows and highs.

No, I wouldn't be able to use them. I have no idea why they're regarded as an 'industry' quality headphone to be honest. There is something odd about it's FR.

The V6 is better as a casual headphone. The 7506 according to some is better wired and less boosted in some areas.
I have some vintage Sony headphones which sound ahead of their time and a CD1700 which is simply excellent with a bit of amplification. If anything I prefer to stay away from the lower MDR-series.

Funny you mention those. Never heard them but they are supposed to be the predecessor of the Philips SHP9000 which I just bought but did not have time to review yet. It came in the same day the HD238 did. The Sennheiser needed modding so got my first attention. IMO the SHP9000 is a serious gooooood headphone but alas, just like the HP1000, out of production already and hard to get. Luckily a friendly RG member helped me out obtaining one.. Very comfy, wide soundstage and no obvious peaks or valleys in the FR to my hearing anyway. Very balanced and open with a perfect fit and lightweight ! The SHP9000 review will come in due time. This Philips is clearly completely different from all the other Philips stuff they have out currently, in a league far above those. I don't have my HD250-II anymore but for what it is worth (in my memory) it is better than HD250-II in many aspects... it is open though and not a closed one. First the HD661 will be handled. Frans, I know this is a bit OT, but I am curious how much you had to pay for a pair of SHP9000. I have been offered a pair of these for about $100.00 US plus shipping, and am wondering if this would be a fair price to pay, and worth adding those to my mushrooming collection of phones . I need another pair of headphones like a hole in my head , but my curiosity itches... Thanks! Israel

I didn't need it either but liked the fit and SQ so much I had to have it. Paid around E 80.- included shipping (this is about $110) new, boxed. They are a lot more expensive normally (at least they were over here above $150 usually). so $100.- is certainly worth it IMO. It is different from the other cans I have and IMO has a (very)good sound quality. First impressions were very favorable. Way better than all their other offerings. Also it can play directly out of an ipod already, not very loud, but loud enough for me. Only 3 headphones left on the wish/audition list: Denon D2000 Shure SRH940 Beyerdynamic DT1350 The 'unaffordable' cans that are out of my 'willing to spend that much on cans' are not in this list

I will most probably buy these. 9:49 AM Update: Just pulled the trigger on these. $134 US including Express Shipping. Should get them next week sometime.

I have just been informed that the ten sample pairs are on their way from Superlux Latest tracking info says they have been released from Shanghai which means they are on a plane as we speak I would like to thank Andy Chung for giving us this exclusive opportunity to road test the HD-661, it is much appreciated I'll ask all of you who want to take part in the review to email me your details in the next few days and will allocate the first "wave" of samples to those of you who expressed interest first. Basically, each reviewer can keep them for 4 weeks and then pass them on to the next person on the list (at their own expense / shipping costs) in the UK that will be Royal Mail 1st class recorded and it should be less than £4 to send them on. More details to follow. Mike.

Mike,
I do not have the Sony equivalent, i.e. the 7506, so I will opt out from reviewing the HD 661 also.

not sure how many people you've got as I've lost track reading the thread but I would be interested as I am a bit of a fan of closed back headphones, I don't have the Sony's myself but I wouldn't mind a listen which I will review (poorly, and include a hideous photograph) just as a pair of close back headphones if you need someone else?
Thanks

My mistake guys..... I obviously "worded" this incorrectly: "I'll ask all of you who want to take part in the review to email me your details in the next few days and will allocate the first "wave" of samples to those of you who expressed interest first." ie: I will PERSONALLY PM each person and "ask" them for their details..... I appear to be receiving random e-mails from people and it's throwing my plan out of synch so, if you haven't received a response don't worry cause I haven't sent one I will start at the beginning of the thread and PM people requesting their details as soon as A: The HD-661 have arrived and B: I have repacked them into individual boxes ready for shipping. All the best, Mike.

2 (black fortunately not pink or something) HD661s appeared on my doorstep this morning (thanks Andrew Chung) Travelling in cardboard boxes with a hint of class. They are resting on velvet cloth which appears to be the accompanying bag... nice touch.
First impressions are very favorable though HD681 alike sibilance is immediatly appearant. out of the box O.K. for instrumental music.
Fit and finish are very good. Glossy finish (Monster beats reminiscent) yet fortunately not fingerprint magnets. The earcups do not swivel sideways (well a tiny bit by the rods) They do swivel up and down and can do almost 360 degrees. Doesn't fold up flat. The rods do not make the annoying noises the other ones are troubled with. Pads are more comfy than HD681. Clamping force is not excessively high but present and needed for closed cans.
I would characterise them as more suited for HiFi than studio usage. Too much lows and highs for mixing down but not as 'extreme' as HD681, just better balanced. Beefy and reaching subwoofer type lows, not 'honky' sounding eventhough it's a closed headphone. Very treble happy so a filter will be made. You cannot use the HD681 filter as the HD661 is 70 Ohm and the HD681 is 32 Ohm. Very 'open' souning and voices are better than on HD681. More mid-lows that are sucked out a bit in HD681. Very high efficiency as well. After about 30 mins I had a headache (listening fatique combined with clamping force ?) I expect this can be much improved with a filter and rod-bending.
I think they can be improved with a bit of modding especially in the highs. pics will follow as will filter mods and more impressions. After modding the other one it will be sent out to our Dutch members for a tour. I need 2 for checking the changes I made as a reference, otherwise you won't know for sure what the effect of a mod really is... subjectivity is peeking around the corner at that moment.
