Superlux have been in touch with me and have asked if we (Rock Grotto) would like to review their latest HD-661 headphone. I think we would like to review it don't you? We (all of the members here) have been offered ten review samples which I will send out to members who wish to take part in the review..... Ten is a lot better than "one" and will mean that members wishing to take part in the review won't have to wait months to hear them The HD-661 is quite similar to the SONY MDR-7506 in appearance and is set to retail at USD $49.90 / Euro 35.90 / GBP £30.00 Details of the HD-661 can be viewed here: www.rock-grotto.co.uk/HD661.pdfPlease express interest if you'd like to take part in the review..... All the best, Mike.

Saw that myself Ian Rock Grotto put Superlux on the map with the HD-681 and "we" have good relations with Superlux PURELY on a "your headphones are good value for money" basis.... they may profit from good reviews (and good luck to them, that's what it's all about to some) but our reviews are totally unbiased and not fuelled by "bungs".... Do you remember the "Banzai" thang Ian? we were asked to remove the "reviews" because we were less than "drooling" over the amps Any manufacturer that sends review samples is told that the reviewers comments will NOT be altered and a TRUE evaluation will be given. There was a certain bloke in Yorkshire who took GREAT offence if anything OTHER than glowing praise was received..... he was used to the "I don't want the amp back keep it" type of "review" (nudge nudge , wink wink) Not the way I operate, I have a conscience and like to sleep at night..... What Hi-Fi seem to like that type of thing and actually "award" these people with a "Best Bung" five star type recognition every year...... If you are very nice to them they may even award you a lump of aluminium Bung of the year goes to....... Anyhoo... who reads those crappy mags these days? Please express interest in this thread if you'd like to Sample /review the Superlux HD-661..... All the best, Pinkie.

I'm definitely interested Mike. They're a great value item.
Yes, I remember that other review. I still cringe at the thought. Funny, 'cos I read it back and it wasn't that bad anyway!! It has to be done 'with no prejudice' or else it wouldn't be worth writing. I think it may have been the inclusion of Neco but I still agree with the order and what I said!!
Funnily enough, I had a look on the site recently and after saying that they wouldn't be going out, they're now a big line.
Thing is, a little bit of interaction could make a great product instead of a good one. (The Sunrise being a great example)

Hi Mike, As I'm no longer the only Spain based member, could the peninsular have a pair for review? I'm sure Javier (and I seem to remember there is at least one more somewhere) would like a listen too. Muchas gracias mi amigo

Has someone actually GOT a SONY MDR-7506 for direct comparison ? That is one of the main questions from Superlux.
Judging from the graphs it has the same +10dB 'hump' in the highs. It is supposed to be similar to the Sony in that aspect... but.. on the Sony graphs I found there is no 'superlux hump'. Might be a measurement/interpretation thing though.
In case the hump is annoying (doesn't have to be, some will even like it) there will be a HD681 alike filter for it.
It is a closed headphone and should have good isolation. It doesn't have the same drivers as most other Superluxes (these are 40mm instead of 50mm). Curious to hear how it sounds.
I 'expect' it to sound more like the HD668B/Samson SR850 than like an HD681. a bit lean on the bass, but with extension, open detailed highs yet without the extension.

Muchas gracias mi amigo I'm interested but I'm away from home for the whole month of August and I'm not sure I could receive them here. Another potential problem is that my other HPs are open (AKGs) or semi (681B), don't have any closed ones to compare with. If the above are no prob then I'd indeeed like to be on the list too, please.

I could buy a MDR-7506 for the fun of it but anyone could do that and make the direct comparison.

Would be happy to help out. Will contribute towards postage of course, and happy to pass / post the 'phones on to someone else.

Mike, Pleas count me in unless you get a full set of more educated 'ears' - I don't mind which colour - and am happy to cover your postage costs. I have a pair of Fransified 681s , Samson SR850, Senn HD850, Phillips SBC HP890 (ex Frans) and HD668B to compare them with. TIA, Dave.

Mike, Andrew said he would be sending me a sample as well so I will ask him if he sent it directly to me or if he sent them all to you so you could forward one to me. I would like Ian to have one for review as well.
I can forward mine to funk1969 as he lives in the Neverlands too. saves shipping costs.

Everybody will get a chance to listen to them Very good of Andrew to allocate 10 pairs, it makes it easier to let a wide audience hear them..... Ian will be the FIRST to get a pair, he has contributed so much to this forum with his descriptive , highly informative, enjoyable, knowledgable and enthusiastic posts. He makes light of his abilities but, in my opinion, he is the the best thing that has happened to this forum and I look forward to reading his posts, they are always spot on. We are VERY fortunate to have "quality" people here and I am so grateful to be associated with you guys..... you have all made my life such a better place to be and I hope you are all getting the same feeling back in return I consider all of you my friends. Mike.

Nah ..... I'm just a good talker. What I find a bit puzzling about Superlux is that they are often described as professional monitoring 'phones. I've never seen them used professionally although they are imo the best value for sound around. Actually, I forgot all about it: Frans, in my move 6 months ago, I lost the filter for 681. If you have time, could you make another and pm the price? If you're too busy - no worries. I lost a lot of bits in the upheaval and that filter was one of them. Ian

The bigger brother of the SONY MDR-7506, the 7509, can handle 3 WATTS! They also have a sensitivity of 107dB/mW so they should be able to do some SERIOUS damage to your ears if you crank them up! The 7506 will handle 1 WATT and has a sensitivity of 106dB/mW so should ALSO go extremely loud. A review of both Sony 'phones here: www.soundonsound.com/sos/may02/articles/sonymdr.aspThe HD-661 is loosely based on the Sony 7506 but the specs differ slightly in that they are slightly less sensitive (102dB/mW) and the max input power is 200mW ( a fifth of a watt) so they won't go as "loud" as the Sony 'phones but, jesus, who in their right mind would be listening to them with 1 WATT going through them
