I think the newest reboot file only had Chinese for the main menu. If you try again with an active s/pdif signal I reckon you'll be OK. PS could you email me the older ingrish spekin file. Cheers I need your email address! By the way, the latest version is 'C' (in the midst of the Chinese info panel). I don't think there is a later one.

Don't hold your breath. I think they've given up supporting the Aune Mini APE (notwithstanding a comment somewhere here on RG, that support for it would continue, following the introduction of the new Aune system). update: Perhaps I should stop wasting money, time and energy. I found a winxp system finally and got the system flashed . After few weeks again I had to. And another two weeks once more.. and then again.. I would never invest myself in to something like this again. Worth paying 10times over for quality and support. End of the story My APE will go for recycle as e.waste sometime soon. No more flashing. I can understand your despair. I suppose I've resolved myself to having to plug in my daughter's Win XP netbook every two or three weeks to reset my Mini APE, it only takes a few minutes. Shame just to ditch your Mini APE. Why not try to sell it here or on eBay? As long as you're honest about the short-comings, I'm sure somebody will put up with the hassle of an occasional reset. That said, I think it's shoddy the way HiFiDIY have used us here at RG as an unpaid testing programme.

It was a shame they never fixed the lockout problem. However, when they're working they are great. I have two! My only gripe is the one at work (background music) always decides to dip out when I don't have time to attend to it, you just want to switch on and forget Sent from my HTC One S using proboards

Yes, I've found that! It never needs a reset when I've got time to do it, only when I haven't. I have a CD player in the same location to use as occasional back up when I need it (and it's handy for comparing FLACs on the Mini APE with the original CD!).

I hope you mean after and before!
How on earth did you manage with the Chinese script? And why have you been suffering in silence for so long?

John, Am in this side of the globe where selling thru eBay or shipping is just painful. Would rather gift this to some one has an xp based system right next to this:) Cheers.

I hope you mean after and before! or even at the same time It was the last file I received directly from Candy. I did question the Chinese menu but maybe that was lost in translation as the reply was simply that I had the latest version. I asked again just recently, before you sent the file over and am awaiting the reply. Cheers

None of my updates have ever given a Chinese language menu, so perhaps yours is indeed a later version. The one I sent you is identified on the info screen (amongst a lot of Chinese characters) as 'C' (via the 'Settings' menu).
Could you please have a look at your Chinese language one and see which version it is? Perhaps they managed to fix the reboot problem and haven't told us!

John, It's the same "JZMINI 1.1C" on the chinese version but there are one or two extra menu selections e.g. remote frequency. There was no improvement on the lockout problem either. It would be nice if that was fixed but I guess there is no chance now as they have moved on and forgotton about this one

It is a bit tiresome, I'll admit, but the fact is I'm willing to suffer the occasional few minutes spent resetting the Mini APE in return for really good performance from such a cheap and useful device.

Here we go again!
Another question for other Ape users;
Have you ever tried to use the digital input (coaxial)? I failed before during a curiosity check but wasn't sure and never double checked.
I've just brought an old Teac P500 transport back to life, as I am at work the only DAC available to me was the Mini Ape.
Plug in and go, erm, well no. The Ape just stays silent, resets itself and sits there dumbfounded. Grrrrrrrr.
I'll take the Teac back home for testing.
Anyone had better luck or am I just missing a trick?

I emailed Candy the same day as the above post but have no reply yet despite chasing.
Plus, there is the new X5, billed as .wav player. Hope it's better executed!!!!!!!!

Sorry, Chris, been out of the loop for a while (for no particular reason) so didn't spot this latest post on the Mini APE.
As it happens, I've got sod-all to contribute other than to concur totally with what you've written. I've tried every few months or so, also just out of curiosity, to see what that S/DIF input does and have found, like you, that all it does is crash the Mini APE and makes it reset itself!
I have found that sticking another DAC on the S/DIF out makes a worthwhile improvement (in my case an old Cambridge DacMagic 2 MkII, bought off eBay a few months ago).
As for a reply from Candy, I wouldn't hold your breath!
If anybody reading this is fed up with their Mini APE, I might be interested in getting a second one (I'm a glutton for punishment!).

It looks really nice Candy, but the problem is that the Mini Ape was so unstable that people who bought one would not be so willing to take a chance on another one given their experiences with the first one.
It's a case of ... the first one wasn't so stable so buy this one instead!!
In the music business, you're only as good as your last performance and that may come into play here I'm afraid.

Can I repeat the same questions from my email; 1) It has no digital inputs?! (SPDIF) 2) does it have analogue out (like the X5A) or only digital out (like the X5) OK 3) what is the limit in capacity of a connected hard drive? 4) can the X6 power the hard drive or is an external power supply necessary AND; Yes, it is a great shame the MiniApe was not supported by HiFiDIY. Although brilliant when it's working it is also temperamental and not fully functional. If the X6 is set to NOT include SPDIF input then I'm afraid the opportunity to get this product right has passed HiFiDIY by. A bit more thought in design is required with an end product that works fully to its specification and if it does not full support must be in place. I nearly bought a T1 as a semi portable unit but my previous experience with AUNE product put me off completely johnI am also a glutton for punishment and have two units! They're good but aggravating too!

Chris, the T1 is fine and has no reliability problems. However, the Mini Ape has a design flaw that was never fixed and so was released perhaps too early.
This one could be a fix but I won't be taking another chance since once bitten ...... etc!!
The lack of a fix for the problem is glaring. Bringing in a new model doesn't fix the ones that we've already bought so it's a case of look for something more reliable elsewhere imo. (unless this one proves to be stable but who wants to take another chance?)

That's precisely how I feel, Alex. Especially as the fix for this could have been something simple like an internal battery to hold the memory intact. The problem is to do with it being powered down for a certain length of time after which it won't boot up unless you reinstall the software. The sad part is that when it is working, it's a super player. I've gone back to a portable location recorder to play high def files on. It's more reliable!! A humble Roland R26 digital recorder which plays back at a sample rate of up to 96 KHz at 24 bit. Fantastic sound and no glitches. Only problem is the retail in the UK is about £350. (Not for me though) ;-) www.amazon.co.uk/Roland-r-26-R-26-Portable-Recorder/dp/B005P4OPDO/ref=sr_1_cc_3?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1364505393&sr=1-3-catcorrHowever, there are cheaper (non professional) devices that are similar that also play back hi res files although the output isn't line out, but easily amped. They are coming down to a price which makes them affordable with the advantage of being able to make your own recordings in hi res too. (You know, record your kids etc) Roland make another cheaper portable device which can easily be carried around - I also use an Edirol (which is Roland) R-09HR; another superb hi resolution digital player/recorder. www.gak.co.uk/en/edirol-r09hr/19523?gclid=CMHK06Dbu68CFYpjfAodsiQ7lgAlthough they're both used by radio broadcasters for location work, they do make superb portable music players and just don't play up. There are also cheaper alternatives that also play hi res stuff. Mini usb out or straight into headphone or analogue into amp.

Chris, the T1 is fine and has no reliability problems. Yes Ian, it worked well while with me BUT even it had a design flaw. As someone pointed out, maybe Marc but I can't remember, the analogue in and outs do not provide a pass through. Although Aune do not claim that it does, it is still a poor oversight. Moreover, a pass through could have been worked to run via the valve buffer, for those who like such a thing. Was the networking problem on the S1 ever fixed? The Aune equipment in general looks very good, sounds excellent and does represent good value BUT needs more thought, work 100% and have good support. Aune are losing custom by releasing "unfinished" product onto the market, then exacerbating the problem with no support or solution apart from "buy our new one"!

"buy our new one"!
Maybe a substantial discount offered to existing APE owners who wish to upgrade to the new version would help to sweeten the pill a little.
Candy?
Take care

Via Claus I have received a software upgrade for the S1 player which I ended up buying after the Mini-Ape (it was not cheap). The Upgrade is in Chinese however within 20 mins I was able to get something out the network uPNP system which seemed promising (and did not work for me before). I have been away for the last week but will work on it over the holiday and provide any feedback; this S1 update may give some indication of what this new player will actually deliver.

Take care Following the problems, I'm not sure I'd want to take another chance. I like their amps a lot actually, but with the Mini Ape, it was just too much trouble to keep installing the software. As good as your last show .........
