I have received my MINI APE yesterday... switch on... dead on copyright screen... aaaarrrgh!!! switch on, switch on, switch on, switch on, nothing... only copyright. please can someone send me by email the newest firmware and the resetting .exe thanx a lot! c.orsettigh@alice.it I'm sorry, but shouldn't a piece of hi-fi equipment actually work when you unpack it and start using it? I was quite tempted by one of these but I'm soo glad I didn't actually buy one. Jeff

It's a great idea, that has been poorly implemented. I was also tempted by one of these.

Not everybody has had problems with this device, and I'm still really pleased I've got mine (it fills a useful background music niche for me), especially at the price we paid here on RG. The occasional glitch when starting up is something I've learnt to live with: it only takes a few minutes to sort out (although I wish it was more future-proof, with a reset program that runs on 64-bit PCs!).

Am i right, assuming this aune will not be compatible with 64 bit W7 systems. If not, i find this quiet amazing, as nearly all pc`s now come with 64bit W7 installed as standard. Mick.

For those of still struggling on with the original Aune Mini APE, I can report that when the device has locked up on the opening copyright warning page, it is not always necessary to go through the full update procedure, requiring a 32-bit PC.
I have found, a few times, that all that is necessary to recover the Mini APE from its failing to boot up, is to the hold down the upper middle button before turning on the rear power switch (as per the last step in the normal update procedure). I have found that on 2 or 3 occasions, this has worked, and also sometimes it hasn't. When it hasn't worked, I've used another source and come back to the Mini APE hours later, and it has worked then: as has been mentioned earlier, I suspect it's something to do with the power supply...

Aha! I'm not completely losing it yet then. I have done the same a couple of times and had success, I wasn't sure as unplugging has almost eradicated the problem for me. The other thing I have noticed is that hates to be cold. The one at home resides in a cold room, it needs warming up first If the new S1 was not such a big jump in price I'd accept Candys offer of a change over but I have too many things waiting on my "pocket money" at the moment.

I do find myself looking for patterns or possible causes of when my Mini APE needs a reset: a while back I thought I'd cracked it, as it went for weeks, with daily use without stalling, and then...
But, for the price paid, I'm happy to stick with the Mini APE, warts an' all.

Hi I have the same problem as JohnnyBlue. Recently purchased AUNE mini WAV APE FLAC PLAYER 24Bit 192K DAC from www.hllyhifi.com/aune-mini-wav-ape-flac-player-24bit-192k-dac-p-283.html But, instead of working it gives me only "copyright screen". No response on button pressing. Isn't the device locked? Please help me with this bug. If firmware upgrade is the solution can somebody send me a file? Or at least a link to this software download. My email is : googlimax@gmail.com

Welcome to Rock Grotto.
I have emailed you the latest update file (RAR).
Follow the instructions and it'll be fine.
EDIT:
Well that's very annoying; my PC spent about 20 minutes uploading the file, then a few minutes downloading it again with this message:
A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. googlimax@gmail.com 552:5.7.0 review our attachment guidelines. j2si17398313wij.40 This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server. avasout03
Presumably gmail doesn't allow such big attachments (14.8MB), so I can't help you. Sorry.

If you want to send someone a big file you can use free hosters like filemail.com (there are more of those sites, mostly free for occasional use) simply visit the site: www.filemail.comfill in the form (e-mail address recipient) and upload the file. The receiver gets a message in his mailbox with the download link and it can be downloaded within 10 days. After 10 days the files are deleted from that server. hope this helps

That's great, Frans, thanks for letting me know. Very useful (and it seems to be uploading more quickly than when sending by email from my Windows Mail client). Grottomaxim, you have 10 days to download the RAR file! EDIT: It would seem anyone can download this file (up to a maximum of 10 downloads) so if anybody else needs the Mini APE update file, help yourselves! Even better, Frans, many thanks!

Many thanks to JohnnyBlue for help.
I have downloaded the archive, opened it, but then failed... There are only command line utilities inside and a poor instruction. I tried to follow this instruction, but no result. As the matter of fact I'm not so good with PC. Could you publish a detailed instruction (which file to click & which command to use in CMD.exe). Which one of the two usb ports to use for connecting mini APE to PC? Is the 64-bit windows 7 a suitable OS for that purpose? May be somebody has a GUI utility for the player's upgrade? It would be much more easy to operate with it!

What a coincidence. Mine has been frozen for a while so I looked at the update process which is in such bad English that I couldn't understand it it.
I plugged then Mini Ape in to the computer which couldn't see a drive so I unplugged and the Mini Ape booted up again all on its own!!!
I'd forgotten just how good this player sounds. I have it running into a Sunrise amp with the AKG K601 and it is just superb. Warm 'hear through' sound.
Can anyone write the instructions for the update in plain English. The txt file with all the files in a folder that are with the update is just jibberish. I don't even know which file is the update from the TXT file!!!

One I prepared ealier. (Cue Blue Peter tune...)
1. Press and hold the right button of the machine , until the the screen goes blank blank but is still lit. 2. Connect the USB B port at the back of the machine to a USB A on your computer, wait for the new device wizard to find the new usb device. If no device is found try another usb port. 3. When the wizard asks for the driver/software, type in the path that leads to the main folder you created.(e.g. C:\Desktop\MiniApeUpdate) 4. After the wizard has said your device is ready, Double-click the "Ë¢»ú MS-DOS batch File" from within the folder, a DOS window will appear showing the progress of the update. 5. Shut off the power after the DOS window shows complete. 6. Press and hold the middle button of the top row, turn on the switch of the power supply , the screen will not light up , after 4-5 seconds , the screen will light up, at this time you can release , the machine will upgrade and Restart by itself . Then the Upgrade finished .

Ah Haaa .... Fwank yo vewy much!!!
Ah wah tah nar Siam.
Thanks Chris!!
Got it. The txt file is just gobbledy gook. That post should be stuck - we're all going to need it.
I really like the sound of the Mini Ape. However, these buggy things are annoying and puts me off the new one in case the same thing is happening.
If it were a more secure player, I must admit, I'd be happier because it does actually sound very good.

It's great, cj! It works!
Thanks GREATLY for your explanation! I've got to recover my mini APE with your help.
Now everyone who's AUNE mini APE is such a defective listen to me! It seems I failed because of 64-bit windows 7 (as well as poor instruction inside an archive). So, work with 32-bit windows! Follow me step by step:
1. Decompress an archive file sent friendly by JohnnyBlue. I got it right in the original folder mini.english 2. Press and hold the right button of the machine , until the the screen goes blank blank but is still lit. 3. Connect the USB (L in the user's manual) port at the back of the machine to a USB port on your computer, wait for the new device wizard to find the new usb device. If no device is found try another usb port (of your PC) until external hardware is found (but not recognized!). For the recognition you just need a driver..., but this is the next step! 4. As expected no driver is found automatically (my PC is connected to internet). That is a good deal of question to the player's manufacturer. Why is there no firmware published on their page? At least, not for upgrade, but for recovery only? Why? Why? Before they reply (if?), let's help our PC manually. Open START menu, then open devices & printers. Here you will find our unrecognized device. By clicking on its picto make your PC searching a driver in our decompressed folder. I linked wizard to the mentioned directory mini.english and... After some minute a lucky report has come, that usb boot driver was found and installed. From now our AUNE mini APE is a recognized device. So, one should remove it safely from a PC, just like you do with usb flash drive etc. But before being removed, the player has to be upgraded! 5. To upgrade the player, let's open our decompressed folder to look for a proper batch file. In my mini.english directory it is the last one with some chinese name 刷机. By double clicking it the upgrade process will be started (the device is still connected). A DOS window will appear showing the progress of the update. Wait untill the command window is closed (i.e. upgrade is finished) and only now you should remove the device safely from your PC. 6. Shut off the power (switch at the back of the machine). 7. Press and hold the middle button of the top row (F in the user's manual), turn on the switch of the power supply. The screen will not light up and only after 4-5 seconds the screen will light up. At this time you can release the middle button (F), the machine will upgrade and restart by itself. The player's screen will change and hifidiy.net will appear on it. After you will see the player's menu (Playing Songs/DAC Input/Settings/Shut Down) That's all! The recovery process is successfully finished (I don't want to call it an upgrade, it is just recovery).

Glad you got it sorted in the end.
I'd thought I'd modified the Instructions text file ('New' in my RAR file) to make it a bit clearer, sorry if it still wasn't clear enough.
There are two batch files in the RAR (mini.english) file: they are identical, apart from their names, so either will work.
The update file (and it IS an update, the previous versions had various flaws -- some of us here will remember the dreadful inter-track clicking!) does not work with Windows 64-bit systems.
EDIT: For the sake of clarity, it should be pointed out that steps 2 and 3 in the instructions only need to be carried (for a particular PC) once, the first time, to install the Mini APE drivers. Once this has been done, steps 2 and 3 should be skipped (actually, the Mini APE should be recognised and thus connected straight away, so these shouldn't even be an option).

I don't think I had your instruction Johnny ..... They were in Chinglish direct from China and I could only half work it out. I didn't want to get it wrong which is why I asked if anyone knew exactly what to do. Also, the folder has a lot of files in it and I didn't know which one was the update or what was what!! I haven't played it for a while because of the lock up and I'd forgotten just how good it sounds.

One more thing concerning AUNE mini APE. Its manual says the device can support FLAC files (level0-level6), i.e. neither level7 nor level8. But today I tried an album image+cue. encoded in flac format to 24bit/192kHz with the highest compression level of 8. And... it plays good! No matter what's given in the user's manual. May be it is a happy occasion? Is this due to the new firmware upgrade (in my case used to recover the device) or some print error in the manual? May be candy can give us some explanation? PS: All the same it's great!
