Hi Chris Its tempting to consider that case though I've been running my Mini-ITX music PC for over a year now in this little case. Its doing the job nicely and cost £36, its just big enough for the job. www.mini-itx.com/store/?c=54If you do decide to try a Group Buy let me know just in case! Oh, pun not intended Syd

Oh, pun not intended Syd Hi syd that looks like a great case and would be perfect for me but for my sound card issues . if i can find a way of rolling it over it may be possible. it's looking like option 1 posted by Chris *the right angle socket extension) is going to put the sound card right on top of the CPU heat sink which may not be a good idea. so i think it's probably going to be something like the wired one which would allow more options placement wise. take care

Hello guys Havn't posted here for a while. I'm using the intel D510 SSD 32GB with a Asus D1 in a small cheap case. MD-100 www.aywun.com/ProductDetails.asp?ID=51Now using the spdif out of the D1 board connector (not optical). coax sounds better than optical. Next will be galvanic isolation with pulse tranny to BNC connector. Also using a touch screen to navigate music besides remote from pc. using an old lcd panel add one these www.cyclotouch.com.au/?gclid=CMDRv63kr6gCFQbSbgodfE8JHwI havn't tried these touch panel addon's yet, using borrowed touch panel at present. That's a nice looking case Allan. Are you running your PC fanless? I'm wondering if it will give enough ventilation. My case is very well ventliated and without the little fan it runs at about 60C. Setting the fan to its lowest point which is virtually inaudible, drops it to 52C .

Allan Hi Allan nice looking case. a few green horn questions if i may I'm also running a D510 but with HDD and also wondered about the heat factor. so some feedback on that would be great i have an Xonar DS soundcard with spdif taken from it's header which sounds really good. if the Sound card fits that case and it's not a toaster i may well go for one. thanks for the info take care

That's neat and has a little more room to play inside. I couldn't find a stockist in Europe though.

Hi Syd and Shaun
Yes that's the case I'm using. No fan used yet and temp seemed low enough last time I checked. I don't want to use a fan if possible. As for heat honestly I havn't run with the top cover on yet. I've been trying different o/s's and hardware configurations.
Shaun The Xonar DS soundcard is the the same three pinouts as the D1? Being is referred to as spdif out for connection to a video card for hdmi?

For those that want to build a case from scratch or those that use a tower case: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stack_effectThe stack effect could very helpful to keep things cool without any active ventilation. The stack effect is quite effective if used properly. I'm very suprised that there are no pre-built cases available that use this effect, but I've seen very old hints to modify early Macs: www.flickr.com/photos/idontlikewords/275104234/BTW: What about other audio devices (like amps) in tower cases? It would be interesting option to keep them cool with the stack effect. I had also the idea to build a Mini-ITX PC with a custom case that looks like early Macs (like 128/512K, SE/SE30, Classic), but with a small TFT display inside and enough room about the components to realise a chimney affect within the case (with almost no addition in height). IMO the Mac Classic design is timeless. And it could be also used with better colours than "computer grey":

small Fans? Anyone heard of these? www.silenx.com/ixtremaprofans.asp?sku=ixp-34-08CJ they are made in china so they should be available most places try ebay? Allan ps cover on and playing for 2hours. for temps from intels docs "Regardless of mode, in the event of a catastrophic cooling failure, the processor will automatically shut down when the silicon reaches a temperature of approximately 125°C. At this point the THERMTRIP# signal will go active." bottom page 12 [/img] [IM img198.imageshack.us/i/tempshm.jpg/

''referred to as spdif out for connection to a video card for hdmi?'' yes Alan that's the same description as the DS destructions. interesting idea using pulse transformer on the PC side. let me know how it goes. take care

Shaun Anyway you can measure the output spdif signal?
If it's the same as the D1, 3 pin (4 pin connector with on pin missing). Then I thought it was a TTL spdif output. At present I'm using a gigabyte spdif output adapter(coax and optical card slot adapter).
Allan
ps the pulse transformer is an idea to keep pc noise out.

Hi Alan here's a picture Will's photo Allan I'm a complete novice so still picking up the jargon ''TTL''? so I'm using the same set up as will outlined in the above picture which seems to work pretty well. thanks for the info it really does help my learning.

Hi Allan
just googled
(1) Short for transistor-transistor logic, a common type of digital circuit in which the output is derived from two transistors. The first semiconductors using TTL were developed by Texas Instruments in 1965. The term is commonly used to describe any system based on digital circuitry, as in TTL monitor.
Ok i think it makes sense
take care

Hi Allan, The output is TTL, as I have to use an in-line pad to bring the level down, otherwise my buffalo dac distorts. No problem with the ebay cirrus based dacs, as the spdif receiver can cope with TTL. I did have a link floating about for converting TTL to consumer (simple resistor network) but can't find it. On the silenx fans, I used them a while back, and they are pretty good. Very quiet, with a reasonable CFM rating. One thing to look into is the Yate-Loon brand of fans. I currently use their D12SH-12 fans in my main PC, and cost about £3 each. They are the OEM of several well known quiet-fans, including the nexus silent fans (which are highly rated), but cost much more. Apart from colour, they are the same fan!

Hi Will yes thats what I'm using right now and as i said it sounds pretty good to me. i did a read around and found that simple resistor network for TTL-SPDIF conversion on diyaudio. i did think I'd take a longer view and go for the SPDIF card slot adapter as it's only £4 so no big deal if i don't end up using it. as i say it's all new to me. take care

Hi Shaun and Will Shaun I was looking for another one of these adapters last night, couldn't find the correct name/terminology in google until this morning posted what I thought was the name there. this morning copy and paste "SPDIF card slot adapter" and first page hit was this. www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/SPDIF-Connection/82/3 spooky I have one like this with only digital outputs Uploaded with ImageShack.usWill I think havn't/checked yet the last pin is +5v for the optical power img860.imageshack.us/img860/5369/asusd1.jpg"] Uploaded with ImageShack.usFinally working out how to attach images

That's spot on, I remember it being 5V when investigating the pin out.
