Hi, First post here, looking for advice. I have a Slimdevices Transporter with balanced outputs. www.slimdevices.com/pi_transporter.html and I am therefore looking for a Headphone Amp with balanced inputs, they appear to be rare and expensive. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Terry

Just because an output is balanced it doesn't mean you need balanced inputs to use it!
Here's how you wire it:-
Assuming XLR's at the balanced end, using single screened coax, wire pin 1 to screen of phono plug and pin 2 to the centre pin of the phono plug.
Or if you want the phase upside down, wire pin 3 to the centre pin of the phono plug.
Hi-Fi is a sad place mate! Full of BS and snake-oil - balanced indeed, what a joke.
And how do I know this? 4 years in broadcast audio my friend. Balanced audio is for long runs of cable. How long a cable were you thinking of using? 200 feet? Or maybe just 1 metre?

Graham, thankfully I completed my five year apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering and it was 7 years before we were deemed qualified. LOL. I cannot stop laughing also. I only ever listen to the transporter and my other source Vinyl through headphones (CDs now copied to the server) since I have retired and now live in an apartment. In my ignorance I thought I would seek advice here, looking for an easy option plug and play. mrarroyo gave me some advice in his/ her second post which I followed up and was thinking of Solo and a Gala Phono stage (being British) therefore eliminating a need for speakers and the rest of my Meridian Equipment which I will sell. I am well aware of snake oil, cables power supplies etc.. Thinks, I could wire the apartment throughout it is a Penthouse and would entail long runs.

I can't add a lot just the mere hint of the word "balanced" makes me roll about laughing..... flavour of the month word on Head-Fi this month is "balanced", they will soon be going "fully balanced" and may well end up "max balanced" what a load of BOLLOCKS! As Graham quite rightly says balanced runs are only really necessary over a great distance..... we've gone from diamond buffers (another totally unnecessary strap on) to the latest "balanced" expectations almost overnight.... who's feeding all this crap out?
By the way (if anyone's interested) I can supply a fuse (balanced to within .00006%) which will make your highs higher and your lows deeper..... it will also make your mids sound more balanced.... I can also supply balanced tap water from the "even keel" balanced source and can supply balanced drinking vessels (perfect cups MKll) and will ship in a perfectly balanced container (balanceassured.co.uk-balancedbubbles-support (TM))

Re the balanced drinking vessels: is the balancedbubbles-support 38D, and is the perfectly balanced container blonde or brunette ? SandyK
