Hi,
I just recently purchased this used amp to pair with my HD600's after reading a lot of good recommendations online. Having had the amp for 3 days now I have a recurring problem. When the volume is at its lowest, I can hear a disturbance on the right ear. I originally heard this on the left ear the first time a powered up the amp. The disturbance is a swooshing or swishing sound, which isn't constant, it fluctuates in intensity sometimes going down to a point where it almost cannot be heard to a quite loud level. Which in turn sometimes disturbs music listening. I was just wondering if any of you have any idea of what this sound might be, if so, what I need to replace. I'm interested in changing tubes at some point anyways as I've read the reviews here on rock grotto. But I would rather start off with changning the part which gives off the disturbance.
A second question I had is that when the volume is very low there is only sound coming from the left ear of my cans. Is this just part of the construction somehow or is it an anomaly?
Very grateful for any help I can get!
Anthony

Try connecting a short wire from a nearby earth point on the PCB to the metal frame of the potentiometer. Many people have reported the channel balance problem at minimum volume.

Thanks Alex, appreciate the reply. I'll try and get hold of some wire, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to altering anything. Would that help to correct the channel balance problem or the sound issue?
Thanks again!

The "swooshing" is most definitely a bad valve (tube) If you swap the valves over you will notice that the swooshing migrates to the other channel. A new pair of valves will cure this.

The channel imbalance at minimum volume is the same with all of them, the secret is to turn the volume level "up"..... nobody listens at zero volume level and the potentiometer tracks more accurately as soon as you turn it up from the minimum end stop.
Hope this helps.
Mike.

Mike you're a lifesaver, I was starting to get really worried that I might need to change everything. Now the next challenge is to find me some nice Mullard tubes!
Cheers once again!

Anthony Anthony Are you aware that Mike can also supply the best sounding tubes for this amplifier, and they will almost certainly be a far closer matched pair at a reasonable price, than from elsewhere ? I was not aware of that! Mike I've just sent you an email on getting some tubes from you! Thanks for the tip Alex!

Alex Hi Anthony Just to confirm what Alex is saying - Mike is your best bet for tubes for the V2. I own a V2 and it has been heavily upgraded, but the Russian 6N23P-EB supplied by Mike were probably the best sound upgrade to this amp at a very reasonable price and far cheaper than Mullards. Earthing the volume pot is a worthwhile free upgrade. Also making sure the earth lead at the back of the amp is clean. www.rock-grotto.co.uk/x-can-v2-tube-rolling.htmIt is also worth checking the transistors while it is in bits. rockgrotto.proboards.com/thread/7931/mf-good-which-hps-modes?page=3Well worth fitting ceramic valve bases as well for your new valves - they are a lot tighter fit than the standard bases and very cheap at £6 a pair from Mike, if you can solder them yourself? www.rock-grotto.co.uk/x-ccessories.html

Thanks for the other tips as well, as I said I'm a complete newbie when it comes to altering anything internally, so soldering is out of the question at the moment. Maybe this V2 will be where I start and get the hang of things, hopefully Best, Anthony
