www.practicaldevices.com/xm4_details.htmno more than a "souped up" Chu Moy "Pocket amp" that is mostly straight from the project page as far as I can tell but instead of a "hobby amp" sold for proift has been taken to actual PRODUCT staus by adding user features that the average consumer would fins truly useful and that make the product a completed amp rather than a work in progress "project amp" that so many knockoffs are. Never heard the amp in my life yet because it follows the normal conventions of the original Chu amp,a design i have made many of over the years i can honestly say I KNOW what it sounds like and that good enough for 99% of portable duty only needs. nothng fancy just a well thought out version of an establidhed design for what looks to be a good price so when i came across it thought i would share the find rickmeister

they all do that unless you make the crossfeed circuit active (Headroom) which adds more electronics in the path.I have mostly passive devices in my home system that ALL require makeup gain at some point so a choice thing really all about how complex you want your audio to be to do a particular job. the main point of the post was not justy about SQ but an actual finished "product" with features any non techy-non forum lurker could appreciate which in the end is the majority of potential users. It is this type of person that does not care about squeezing the Nth degree of sonics out if that also means they have a "wonky" product that they need to take special care in the use of. I also beleive simple is best and what could be simpler than a single op-amp with a power supply ? Yes it can be complicated with an active ground and a buffered output but why when 90% of the headphones the likley purchaser would use can be driven just fine but the simple single stage ? It can be said it is "Just a CMOY,nothing special" but that is the entire point. The CMOY IS special in that it showed the way and had enough early stages enthusiastic builders to take it to other levels and then post the details for all to see (including many who base their sole income around the original design ).It is THIS that has launched an entire after market/cottage/kitchen table industry where anyone who could read could make an amp which is fine to a point and that point being most of those amps are not FINISHED being no more than an operational circuit with ZERO consideration for the actual intended use (travel music) and actual operation (extreme conditions, rough handling, battery operation) because they have no idea how the damn thing works to begin with so spend time rolling in parts to get a "sound" while forgetting the make the amp a finished product that would be at home in a blister pack at Wal-Mart,as the above would be being finished
