Volume on an X-CAN v8

Have a question about the volume on an X-CAN v8.  I just picked one up on ebay that someone was selling as parts only. It actually sounds decent, but doesn't come alive until you turn the volume up to about 1 or 2 o'clock (middle being 12:00 so a bit past there).  Before that it just doesn't sound very good.  I'm driving AKG 701s which are beast to drive, and I'm using the USB from a computer (decent redbook CDs).  I've never heard an X-CAN V8 otherwise as reference, is this normal?  I opened it up and it seems to have the JAN-phillips tubes installed which I think I have read on this board is not standard for the V8.  Should I replace them?  Should I try some of the mods?  Any recommendations would be helpful.
