Quote: "We were still extremely surprised by how well our subjects did, and particularly surprised by the fact that the biggest gains appear to have been, by and large, in timing. You see, physicists tend to think hearing is spectrum. But spectrum is time-independent, and hearing is about rapid transients. We were just told, by the data, that our brains care a great deal about timing." I have previously reported in several threads that I can hear things that at my age that I shouldn't be able to hear, due to improved rise time of a waveform. That's why I use wideband and low noise electronics. Regards Alex www.hificritic.com/Forum/yaf_postst1395_Human-hearing-beats-the-Fourier-uncertainty-principle.aspx

Another case of science catching up with reality.
Well found Alex

"It's all about time", been saying this for years, whether it's to do with hi-fi/music in the home or my daughter practising on her alto.

Someone smarter than I may need to explain this, but I read the article and didn't see where the findings of this study support the often fanciful claims made in the world of "high end" audio. It does seem to support much of the criticism of lossy audio codecs - but the weakness of those have been demonstrated repeatedly over time. That humans apparently have better discernment of pitch and time variations in sound than previously thought I get, but I don't get much more than that from the article.

I'll wait until the article comes out on both formats.. Record and Hirez, preferably both master copies, then make my own decision,,,,
