Hi,
Has anyone ever experienced an issue with the X-DAC v3's optical connection? Mine has started to drop the signal intermittently.
I have swapped optical cables, electric sources (cables, sources, and house circuits). The source is from an Apple Airport Express. I have swapped it as well. When playing the Airport through my V-DAC II is works fine. When I source the optical in the X-DAC v3 from a Denon DVD player it works fine via both optical and coaxial RCA.
I have used compressed air both inside and out to ensure dust was not an issue. It only experiences issue with the Airport optical, but has worked fine with it for years; and, the same Airport works fine through the V-DAC II.
Has anyone ever had a similar experience?
Thanks in advance -Brad

That wouldn't have been my first course of action Brad...... compressed "air" is pretty fierce and you could do more harm than good by firing that amount of compressed "air", holus bolus, inside your DAC...... Please DON'T spray your DAC with WD-40 or take a hammer to it..... somebody will be along to help you sort it out soon.
Mike.

I'm no expert. Just to check, is your Airport Express when connected to X-Dac V3 coaxial, ok? Just to have a better understanding before diagnostic mood.

Specifications Description: Wi-Fi (IEEE802.11g, 2.4GHz, 54Mbps) wireless computer networking hub with stereo analog outputs and optical S/PDIF digital data output. Perhaps try a different Optical cable with the Airport Express. I am assuming here that the Optical cable used with the Airport Express has a different plug at the output end of the Denon player ? The optical receivers in the 2 DACs may have different sensitivities for received light level.

Thanks Alex. Now I see the (Toslink) light. Ok, if we diagnose further, there could be a problem with the V3 Toslink receiver too. I'm saying this as my V3 Toslink receiver kaput about 4 years ago and I replaced it and everything was back to normal for the Toslink side. I'm suspecting this as Alex's V3 also had the Toslink receiver kaput, if I'm not wrong, at about the same time. I'm not sure whether Alex has replaced it as he felt there was no usage for the Toslink then as coaxial is techncially better. As we know, Toslink is based on laser and so is the CD, Bluray or universal players. The laser will wear out and must be replaced along the way. It will not last forever. The intermittent sound is also the same symptom when the laser from the digital players is about end of life. If we use everyday, a Marantz 63 laser will only have about 2 to 3 years life as a benchmark before the dropping sound comes in. Hopes this helps.

Chong I don't use mine, but I replaced it after the rear panel slipped while on the bench and damaged the assembly. Alex
