I am about to close a deal for an X-Can V2 (unmodded) costing £75. Now I am preparing to do some modifications, namely a new PSU, replacment volume potentiometer and power supply electrolytics. Sounds like a good idea Yup, the stock pot is 50K but 10K is fine.... the one you link to is a "linear" pot...... you really want to be using a "LOG" pot..... I can supply the LOG ALPS pots / 50K. Yep, not bad at all..... I use Panasonic FC 35V / 1500uF in the V2 mod kit. Good again That is PERFECT for the job, I'll tell you how to wire the primary and secondaries when you get it. Yes, no problems at all. The transformer you link to is a Vigortronix one..... www.vigortronix.com/gallery/products/specification-139.pdfOn the primary side (for 230V operation) connect grey and violet together..... brown is L and blue is N For a 12V output on the secondary (using the full 30VA) connect orange and black together and connect yellow and red together. Simple as that All the best, Mike.

Thanks for your help Mike! I didn't notice the pot was linear. How much do your 50k pots cost? Thanks for the links to the transformer specs and the tips for connection. I will post here as soon as I have received the x-can. I really hope it will be as good as my X-Can V3 that I stupidly sold one year ago (one of the most stupid hi-fi decisions I've made ). I was also thinking about buying some fresh tubes, maybe Electro Harmonix. All the best to you!

I have a question about the transformer. Would it be bad to use a 100 VA transformer for X-Can. I have found a good quality toroidal transformer very cheap.

Bump :-)
Can anyone please help me with my question about the 100 va transformer? The nominal secondary voltage is 12v but the measured is 13.45.

Bump :-) Can anyone please help me with my question about the 100 va transformer? The nominal secondary voltage is 12v but the measured is 13.45. That is quite normal when the transformer is unloaded. It should drop to close to it's rated voltage with a typical load. Regards Alex

Could you please help me with another question. Is it ok to mix 35 V and 50 V capacitors in the rectifying part of the circuit? For instance to use 1000uF 50V for C3 and C4 but 1000uF 35V for C5 and C6?
All the best to you!

Thanks Mike! Do you think it is safe to buy capacitors from factory surplus? Is it a bigger risk for defective parts?

Thanks Mike! Do you think it is safe to buy capacitors from factory surplus? Is it a bigger risk for defective parts? Nothing wrong in buying from a surplus outlet, the caps will be NOS and could well be "leaded" (not lead free) which are a lot better than the lead free types we are forced to use nowadays.... as long as they're not like 50 years old you should be fine..... I have a cap analyser / ESR tester and it's very rare to find a defective "new" cap, in fact I have never come across a dud. What brand of caps will you be using? Mike.

I will be using Panasonic FC and FM. Both from a factory surplus :-) M
