Now that's just kinky!! They're not available. Has it got a similar sound then, Mike? Would it be cheaper to send the lot in one go when you send the filter back? I'll send the power supply too since it has a different type of plug. I'll get it off Saturday, Mike when I have time to get to the PO.

To whom? Hi Mike I gave the link for anybody who is interested in knowing a little more about the Philips headphones that you mentioned. I was curious enough to find out a little more about them. There is no agenda. Regards Alex P.S. This editing is from a brand new Windows 8 64bit P.C. If I disappear off the radar for quite a while, I have managed to stuff things up while trying to install programs and other stuff from the old P.C. Presently, I am using the Samsung 40"LED TV for a monitor while in the early stages via a long cat 5 cable from the other room. .

Well done Israel. I must admit, the improvements to the sound seem quite dramatic. For me, the T50 offers two headphones in one.
Take the filter away and it becomes a great work headphone since it plays at life volume with no pain and I can keep them on for long periods. Take the same headphone home and switch the filter in and the highs then open up and the volume can go right down and still have presence.
Guys at work took FR measurements from mine and were really impressed with what they saw. It still has minor peaks and dips but they are all within 3db and the main thing is that they are smooth rather than jagged, or dramatic. The extension both ways is quite large as well. It's going down to 10 Hz and up to about 21 or 22KHz I think. (Almost no drop off!!) What is surprising is the low bass. On some recordings, there is no bass and yet on others, they smack hard!!
I was listening to the Rite of Spring a couple of days ago and the difference between the timps and bass drum is huge and especially noticeable in those passages where Stravinsky wrote the quick changes between the two of them. You hear a nice rounded boom followed by a solid thud, very quickly in some passages!! Same thing happens in Tchaik 4, last movement after the initial flurry and the timp hits followed quickly by the bass drum.
The other thing is how smooth the treble is. In the slow passage where the basses play a low Eb notes followed by 3 chords in the Rite - I forget the name of the section - it's one of the processions - suddenly the timps play that Beethoven 5th rhythm followed by a tam tam and the brass section whack out some incredibly loud block chords. Very brash and in your face type of thing. I normally have to turn that down since the trumpets screaming brash notes up there can get a bit harsh on the ears. Not on the T50. You seem to be able to hear into the chords more and actually hear the individuals quite plainly.
So although the treble is extended, it doesn't turn edgy at all.
I'm really interested in how it stands up against your other orthos. Not a question of just which is best, but whether it's even close!! I was thinking about something along the lines of an HE-500 or an HD800 but it's a close call and I'd end up having to get both so I guess the T50 is a cheap compromise!!!
I have been comparing the Dampened T40 with the non-dampened T50 as well. The T40 is very flat and the T50 has a mild hump in the mid bass. I can see many preferring the mid bass hump since it's closer to what they are used to hearing on many other headphones. The T40 sounds more controlled and restrained by comparison but it is more accurate imo. However, I think that many would find this a tad too restrained.
The trouble is, if they go to the point of cramming loads of plasticine onto the back of the baffle, it's messy getting it off again since it would have to be dug out so I do wonder whether it's best for people to try the pads and then filter (if they want) first before plugging the insides up. The T50 is fatter and rounder by comparison and My feeling is that many would prefer that in spite of it not being as flat.

Thanks Ian! The other day I was comparing my modded T50s to the HE-500s, and while the former were very close to the latter in accuracy, they didn't quite measure up to the presence, wonderful realism, the smooth, flat FR, and phenomenal midrange and bass of the latter! So, IMHO, the HE-500 still remains the gold standard in my stash , and while I may grudgingly sell some of my other recabled headphones , which I don't anticipate using, the HE-500, filtered with the Frans designed active filter, will stay with me for the rest of my time on earth! Mind you, however, that I do find myself using the T50s more and more, for there is a certain transparency in their SQ that I love. For certain recordings, especially those made by TELARC, which are very flat, my filtered T50s add a certain desirable sparkle, perhaps due to the small 3dB peaks that your colleagues at work measured, which probably does not render as realistic a reproduction, but nevertheless, is exiting! As a matter of fact, who is to say what IS realistic , for various concert halls have acoustics that are peculiar to their individual builds that add their own peaks and valleys, as well as distortions! There is no such thing as a perfect, distortionless concert hall, and that includes the best ones in the world! The particular sound characteristics, or character of a concert hall, if you will, are oddly determined by the sum of aberrations (large and small) they add to the sound of the performers. Acoustics is still a black art , and IMHO, will remain such.

Hi Israel,
I have fitted the 940 pads to my T50`s, and i think it has improved the bass slightly, the overall SQ i find very pleasing, but will be trying the other modifications this weekend, a filter will be heading my way soon. Should have a filter for my HE6`s shortly, the enclosure, pre-fitted with hardware is currently in transit to Frans.
I agree with your comparison, these are no match for the HE6`s either (even without filter) at present, but the modifications (or at least some of them) should bring them closer.
Mick.

I don't find the band too bad tbh, but I think bald people have more of a problem with them. The one you've got looks nice though and it was cheap. It reminds me of the Beyer bands.

You got it right... i am bald... I am too, Chris! What I did on mine is not as pretty as yours, but it is comfortable. I simply cut a piece of self-adhesive black felt, which I got from an art supply store, and applied it to the inside of the headband. Here is a not-so-pretty photo of the headband: Cheers! Israel
