Folk with a punk/rock attitude.
I really like this band. Rough and ready. Full of folk. Gritty.
It uses orchestral instruments along with trad stuff and an energy that is unbelievable.
I know that some folkies object to them. I like the manic quality contained in it. Kind of like the Pogues.
A great album. (If you're into eccentrics)

After double checking with another track, good find there! I like their music too. Typical English underlying folk sound.

Having a first listen to this lot, they are good fun. I listened through "Burlesque" which a seemed more a serious outing, I now have "Matachin" playing which is lighter hearted. (on Grooveshark) Somehow it reminds me of some very drunken nights out with the lads, especially one pub in the London area ( may have been Streatham but the memory is at a disadvantage ) where they regularly had live music in the main bar area, often a bit of diddly-aye-day as the place was Irish biased. Then afterwards upstairs to the club for some attempts at pulling or just getting more legless Happy days! ps you can hear the new album here

I really like the 'spit and sawdust' aspect of their music!! It's kind of rough (Pogue like) but there are some very nifty little passages in there that happen so quick that you realise you are actually hearing some good musicians in there. Some of it is pretty tricky to perform.

I had a listen to Burlesque, Chris and you're right, it's a bit more tradtional. I've got all three of their albums now. Really like their stuff.
Apparently, they divide 'folkies' up who can't decide if it's actually folk or something else!!

I noticed that Bellowhead are playing at the Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 14th Feb 2013 at 7.30 with tickets starting from £17.50 for anybody who likes them that are within traveling distance.

I have all of their albums now, Chris. They're a hoot. Kind of reminds of the Pogues in a 'folkysy' way.
Apparently, they upset some folkies because they're not regarded as real folk music so they had some kind of backlash. I like them though.

...can't pigeon-hole them so they must be wrong; chicken chokers! Have these criticisers never heard of new ideas/mixes/development? Sheeeeesh. I like them too, my next album buying list is growing fast at the mo! That's about it, Chris. So many people hate it if music doesn't fit their idea of what the genre should have. Unfortunately, that also goes for the companies who force bands to spew out the same stuff over and over if it sells. Then the band becomes associated with a certain type of sound and are marketed in accordance. Makes the prediction of sales and forcasting profits much easier for them!!

Well, at least better sounding and more enjoyable than what Norah Jones, Sade, Depeche Mode, etc chucking out nowadays. Argghhhh ..................., maybe Diana Krall can be in the list in the future too.
