Still not being home yet but at least in the UK, I went for a wander around Norwich (around the BBC) and found a Sevenoaks shop going up past the Jail place.
They had a nice stock of headphones which I listened to and one that attracted my attention was the PX360. A portable closed headphone.
It's a portable headphone but way more sturdy than the PX200 with that same thin lead. The cups (just) fit over my ears and isolation is really good. Funnily enough, for a portable they're not as sensitive as you'd have thought but the sound is quite huge.
I'm not that keen on the PX200 and although I have a Beyer DT 1350, I do find that sometimes a bit 'flat' and uninteresting to listen to. The PX360 puts a lot of beef into the music by comparison.
It seems pretty neutral until you get to the bass which is huge but makes for a really entertaining listen.
The treble is unlike other Senns. The PX200 has a crystal top end and so does the PX360. It seems to have a similar treble but a much bigger sound than its baby brother.
Comparing how these headphones behave in FR/square wave shows that they are definitely not that neutral in fact and the look all over the place with the PX200 looking quite a bit tidier. However, on ear, they're ok. The odd thing is the bass sounds really big and yet the PX100 shows a much more raised bass on graphs by comparison.
An odd headphone for a Sennheiser.
I'll compare to the Beyer when I get home and the HD25.
They sell in shops around £100 - 130) but Amazon can do one around £70. These are a really nice alternative to the HD25 and are more comfortable. A more open treble and a big bass.
Funny that they haven't had many mentions on the internet.

I almost bought one but didn't like the build of it.

It seems pretty robust to me. The weakest aspect of the build is the lead which is the same as the PX200 and PX100. Very thin but not a big problem.
The bigger problem is the lack of sensitivity for a portable headphone. Thhis is a headphone that really needs a portable amp. It also improves with amping - at least coming from an Ipod.
I haven't been home yet but when I get back, I'll compare them to others.
They sound good louder but too much and they turn a bit sibilant. They don;t have the same sound sig as other Sennheisers. I'd say that they are unusual in this respect.

These look quite interesting. I have the HD238 which are quite similar looking at a casual glance, they are also a headphone I like a lot, being very light and comfortable. My only niggle with the 238 is that they are fiddly to find the sweet-spot. I see HF have covered these, of course they disagree with you Ian and say they are an easy drive "no amplifier required". I know who I'll believe When Zigis comes up with the 3x9v portable amp we'll be OK Tempting...

Hi Chris,
sorry I'm slow to reply. I've just got home literally from working flat out. Sick of rice and fish and not being able to understand anyone. I also kept myself on British time so I've been awake all night and sleeping by day. Really nice because in UK, I feel 'normal' again, but it's bloody freezing here. The weather has really changed in a short while.
I'm having a Neco 18v amp sent to me. Rechargeable with 8610 fitted. 60 hour life so it will keep me going for 1 - 2 weeks at a time.
The px360 isn't a neutral headphone, Chris but I find the Beyer sometimes has me craving for more entertainment tbh. It's flatter and all that but I crave more welly!!!
The px360 may have a recessed mid, I think. I'll compare them with others now I'm home. Solid bass but it's really not as easy to drive as some. Ipods struggle. Sure, it plays music from an Ipod, but doesn't give a full blooded dynamic range until it sings on an amp. Once it's amped, it shines.
Amazon do them for £70ish. I have also seen them in Uk at £109 and even £130. They're worth £70 but I'm not sure I'd be happy at £109. The K601 is too close in price and is way better. I know the 601 isn't portable but good for hotels.
I'll do some more serious listening on them. Not bad and work well portable as long as you use a non EU device with the blasted volume limit imposed. Quite comfy too.

I just did a quick a/b with the Beyer and on the face of it, you feel that the Beyer is compatively harsh and thin. Even nasal. This is the standard Beyer and not the Frans mod with HD25 pads.
I do find it worrying that I seem to veer towards a less neutral sound if I'm honest.
On paper, the DT1350 should be streets ahead. Better square wave and more even fr graph. However, for all the on paper defects shown by the Senns, imo they actually communicate better.
Dale brought this up and I must say, it is starting to show with me too. The Beyers may be a superior headphone but the Senns just communicate better imo.
I'm starting to doubt my own ears now!!
My first feelings about the Senns was - bass led and not neutral but entertaining. However, now I've compared, they are actually very good and I have a little more respect for them in spite of the odd graphs for them.
Surely Senn looked at graphs when designing them? They've tuned them to be musical? Bold move if they did - especially knowing what techs would say about graphs and specs. They have more punch in the bass and with an amp, they hit pretty hard for a portable headphone.
I'd amp them though for sure. The dynamics sound less squashed.
Makes you wonder - specs or ears?
These headphones really don't look that great on paper. OK ish but not great! However they play musically and add a nice depth to the sound that many portables don't deliver.
It's slightly weird liking the sound of a headphone that looks strange on paper. I tend to look at both and feel a little uncomfortable saying that a headphone sounds good while the paper says...... problems!!! Makes me also wonder how accurate the Headroom graphs are too.
They do sound closed (unlike the k550) but better than I thought on a better source and amp.

interesting thoughts Ian. I'll wait for your relaxed-at-home opinion after you've had a better play and, no doubt, news on the 18v Neco too.

Sensitivity is lower. The way that Sennheiser do the figures is misleading and it works out a more truthful 98db, not 110 as stated in the info. They measure it in a different way. One review I found here puts the sensitivity at 'average'. I'd say below average personally, given that it's supposed to work portable. www.avforums.com/reviews/Sennheiser-PX360-Headphones_322/Review.html
