just recieved today (from ebay)
bought these assuming they would need upgrading. dont sound too bad as they are (1st 15 min , was like listening to a bowl of rice crispies) has now settled but having to use an impedence adapter to remove the horrid background hiss. my headphones are US pro900 and denon d7000, 40 and 25 ohms. am i right to assume this issue will go away with Mike's mods? did i over pay @ £146 inc post? btw, my modded v1 is totally silent with both cans, without imp' adapter.

IMO, the V1 and V2 don't work as well with low impedance headphones. I also use the D2000 amongst many other headphones and they are extremely sensitive, so noise will tend to be an issue with some amps.
However, Mike managed to derail all noise on my V2 so that it's very quiet.

The rice crispies would indicate that the valves are knackered.... the "noise" could be down to leaky / dried out caps.... a V2 in tip top shape should be pretty much deadly silent. If the unit is in very good condition "cosmetically" then, no, you haven't paid over the odds.... things like valves and caps can be sorted but grubby looking enclosures can't. It would be worth your while having a look inside.
Look out for things like browning of the board next to the TIP transistors, bulging caps on the PSU board (upper board).... the valves may not be shot but the pins may not be making good contact with the sockets.... whip the valves out and give the pins a scrape with a sharp craft knife, this will remove the oxidization..... the valves may well be shot though but this is worth trying.
A V2 firing on all four will have zero snap crackle and pop.

ATB Mike. i am not in any hurry at all. depending on quote, it may have to wait until new year. or maybe i will just get the v2 done and not the x10. will open them up for a look over the weekend and drop you the email early next week. i still have the "super modded v1", you sold me some months back, so it aint as if i am short on the amp front cheers

Oldson, have a few pictures of your V2 interrnal posted here will give all a better assessment of your unit. Usually, the internal PCB is of the poor quality type and the copper traces will lift quick easily on soldering or even on prolong swtich on. The power TIP tansistors areas, as mentioned by Mike, are usually the "Bermuda Triangle" of concern for obvious reason as stated.

Hi Oldson. That unit looks in very good condition to me, especially when you look at the lower PCB around the problem area of the transistors - it looks like somebody has already re-soldered the joints but it is worth double checking. It also looks in original condition and is ripe for an upgrade via Mike or one of his kits, the difference is unbelievable Also if you are doing the work yourself there are plenty of people on this site who own the V2 that can advise and help you if you encounter problems. I think you will enjoy upgrading this unit. Chris

Oldson, Your unit is indeed in immaculate condtion and lightly used. Those heavily used units will show brown out PCBA around the TIP power transistors area. Also, there is a likely lifted copper pads as well at the TIP legs due to the heat of the TIPs. Your X-10 also looks lightly used too. So you have very good used units there. And now to the audio "hospital" and have fun .................
