Due to the quantity of cd's that have accumulated in my bedroom I have been instructed to tidy up! So like every one here I though Project!!!!
Looking at using an old Samsung Q1 that has been waiting patiently for me to use it for a while.
Thinking XMBC software on the Q1, NAS with music on it and use my TEAC UD1 DAC (will take a USB input, though may use SPDIF eventually). This way I can control it all from my iPhone/iPad that normally sits next to me charging at night.
I have a spare wireless router that i can use just for this so it should keep a decent speed, it is allready in the loft above my bedroom. If needed i could put some Cat5e in but would rather not have to.
Does this sound workable or have I missed somthing? First time with computer audio stuff really.
The thinking behind the XMBC software was that eventually i am looking at using a Raspberry Pi behind the TV and this would link together.

I think that bulk storage of music files and either wired or wireless transmission to the playback kit is very much the way to go. And I too am in love with the novelty of controlling it all with my phone! Who would have thought it?
But, look out... when it's so very easy to flick through the music collection I find I rarely listen to a whole album. Rarely listen to a whole track even.

Not had that issue with my ipod i use when out of the house, I tend to listen to the same album a few times before moving to somthing else.
Just updating my Q1 as we speak, no end of updates for it.

what size are the hdd's in the NAS? Any preference for storage format?
Ripping a lot of CD's can be very time consuming.
If you use a lossy format this time, then decide you prefer lossless, you'll have to rerip.

Well i have about 600 cd's at present and probably 400 vinyl.
Ripping the CD's is a pain, but I can keep chucking in another cd into the pc at work and rip them that way, the vinyl will be more of a pain. Am looking at 'exact audio copy' to rip them, seems reasonable.
I would deffinately record in lossless, probably FLAC but undecided on that.
I may be getting my hands on a 2nd hand pc soon so am thinking of using that, keeping the HDD on the pc for software etc and adding a PCI raid contoller with 4x 3gb HDD for the music, this way its backed up within the raid array. Then I can allways change this to another PC if needed in the future.

Isn't it amazing how lazy digital music has made us! Not that long ago I was happy recording LPs onto cassette for second copies or regular-playback-copies of valuable albums. Now, if its CD, ok, I'll rip that BUT if a LP, ya gotta be jokin'. So now I've been finding downloads, usually Flac, of LPs I have and making do with those

Well it will give me Somthing to do whilst listening to all the LP's
Must admit that recording them isn't going to be the most fun I will have ever had. But once done will be nice to listen to them anywhere, easily!
Anyone had experience with active USB cables? Will need a 8M one to connect my pc to my dac.

Hi Andy, I have just seen your post and I am not sure if you are recording LP's or Cd's. I have an Xitel Inport www.dansdata.com/inport.htm that I used for copying my LP's when I had them. I no longer own any LP's or a turntable. If you or anybody else reading this are planning to copy LP's and you do not have means to do so, you can have this Inport FREE. I no longer have a use for it. Anybody interested PM me. Chris

Oooh, just discovered that win7 pro will run hard disks as a raid array as long as I can plug enough into the motherboard! Time to search into this I think.
