I was talking about Senn headphones today and some guys I was talking to mention the 500 family of headphones as being particularly good. We all probably know the HD598 well. (I do) It is very good but lighter sounding than the HD650. A good headphone. These guys were singing the praises, not of the 598 but the HD558 and the HD518. The HD518 in particular is very good value, they say at £85 ish. Strong bass and typical Senn laid back sound with the diffuser type of thing going on in the earpieces like all of them above the 500 series. I checked their FR graphs and all three of the 500 series are really quite similar. Has anyone tried an HD518? www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD-518-Circumaural-Headphones/dp/B0042A68R8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349122887&sr=8-1

I've only briefly heard the 518 on unfamiliar music but it certainly seemed to have the same general character as the other 5 & 6 hundred series so, yes, good value for someone who does not already have any of the others.
Since I popped a Cardas (normally wayyyyyyy too expensive for the difference but a nabbed a deal on 2nd hand) on my 560ovII I've been using them a lot more and happy for them to be on my noggin for longer.

The HD518 is great for the price, but listen to it against an AudioTechnica TAD400/TAD500, the TAD400 surprised me recently at a meet, it's a great headphone for such a low price. It's also the most comfortable headphone I've ever used.

Thanks eugenius!!
The reason I ask, is the fact that I use a lot of headphones and always (in the end) return to the Senn sound and it's sig. I've been looking at the 500 series and wanted to try and find out what the differences are betweem the HD518, 558 and 598.
I chatted with the guy who designs Senn headphones and he didn't reply for some reason and I wonder if the differences are in fact, minimal.

Basing on measurements the 518 is bassier than the other two

With the 555 and 595 there was a tweak to remove some foam on the 555 to make them into 595s !!.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if the 518 are are similarly close to 598s

Thanks Freddy. I went and listened to the 500 'family'. All really nice.
Basically, the lowered priced ones sound slightly 'thicker' and as you go up, the treble opens up a little.
I also tried a 419 which was not too nice. It sounded very closed in and thick.
The HD558 was better as well. Now I'd like to hear the HD598. (new version)
I wonder how far the 598 is from the HD600. My guess is that it isn't too far removed judging from what I've heard so far.
A nice man in Norwich lined them up for me on a multi-player device so I could instantly compare.
