I've got Frans' modded sunrise II with auto bias and auto voltage set for tube rolling :-)))))
At the moment it's used with Philips old ECC88 and Mullard ECC88 uk made. And I have a mullard ECC85 foreign made .both from 1960's.
Plus those 2 Russians 6H23N-EB Mil-Spec I got from Mike in the modded xcanv2 to play around with.
How would you describe those tubes? I need a reference point from someone who knows their stuff.

Layums, you're not boring. Don't think that!
Problem with valves is it's a kind of really subtle thing and generally learned with experience of loads of them. Many of us use certain valves because we're familiar with them and know kind of, how they sound.
For instance, I'm very fond of the 6922eb variety, for me, they put a bit of 'kick' into the music.
However, I was lucky to be 'led' by Mike, who is much more experienced in valves.
So I have 'eb's in 5 valve amps that I use.
Mike has a nice description of some valves on the front area of Rock Grotto. (Along with mods)
However, Mike's Little Pinkies also taught me that (say half or more) of a valve amp also lies with the quality of the power supply. A mundane (perhaps) piece of gear that I am now acutely aware of when listening to an amp.
I'd say that for good dynamics, look at the supply. (And low noise floor) For timbre or tone - look at the valve.
Mike can also go further with respect to caps and further enhance timbre and impact although some on here don't think it makes a difference. To a sensitive soul like me, it does.
So I guess choosing a valve is a personal thing and is quite difficult to do.
Mike's valves of the day are really nice but tbh, I wouldn't know the effects until I heard them. You just have to get in there and try them. That's why I told Mike that he'll have me spending a small fortune on all these lovely valves he introduces on valve of the day.
The one thing you can be sure of with his valves though, as opposed to EBay is that he has personally tested them for efficiency. That's a good thing to do with valves from the 60's onwards.
Don't chase your own tail though or you'll end up with valves everywhere!! I have just 2 eb's left so when they go out, it's a big search if Mike has sold them all.

Hi rabbit. Thanks for the reply.
Valves are like wine. Nice.

It would be fairly usefully to produce a tone colour wheel or pie with valves.
Anybody know if such a thing.
I have a few different ones. And the internal construction of them alone is interesting.
How are they made?? YouTube might have the answer.
