Evening all,
Had a listen to both of these at the hifi show last week, really can't decide!
701, great mids, loads of detail
Grado's, huge bass, nice mids, very warm sounding (I like this)
The Q701 where a relatively new pair and not run in, the grado's had been run a while it would appear.
Any ideas?

I think you may have answered your own question as the 701's will never be warm, it's just not something they do.

The 701s will run in and ease a bit. I'm sure somebody else will be able to say more but I would think 250 hours. The ebay second hand market is a good source because of this - People give up on the 701s before giving them time.
Mine are not warm however and I am fed up with them creaking if I move my head. Check this latter point out. It pi55es me off.
I find both Grados & the 701 quite demanding headphones and whilst OK for a short listen if you intend to listen for over 30 minutes make sure you trial them for that period of time. Detail can equal fatigue.

Well I do wear glasses, but they are very fine and normally don't interfere too much, I am still young enough that I can see without them, just! I have had a pair of Grado sr80 and hated them. Enough top end that my ears hurt after a very short time, the 325's sounded different to that though. Got some AT W1000 that are great, but would love Somthing different every now and again

For myself I find glasses a major issue. With most circumaural 'phones the specs' won't allow a good seal with the HP cups. With supra-aural 'phones discomfort due to even gentle pressure pushing the ear pinna down on the spec. arms limits listening time. For a proper listen it has to be specs off so no reading or PC work if I want the best from my cans

Have you tried flexon? Distributed my Marchon, I'm wearing my reading pair now and they flex enough to give a good fit with cans on, my other pair are Flair rimless, very fine stainless steel, again tend to flex enough.

Go back a bit and try the K601.
To my ears, it's a more pleasant listen than the 701's.

And IMO the old K501 is better than either the K601 or the K701. I am one of those who loves the Grado sound, however they prefer valve amps and the can should have about 100-200 hours of burn in to settle.

I've got the Grado 325si, but don't really like them very much: every so often I'll dig them out and I think, "ooooh, these are good, I should use them more often", but it's always such a relief thereafter to go back to Senns or Bayers... If andy finds "Grado's, huge bass, nice mids, very warm sounding" relative to the AKG, then the latter must be as thin as green Rizlas! EDIT: Apologies, gentlemen, but when I wrote "Bayers" above, instead of "Beyers", I was clearly still thinking of the Champions League Final on 19 May, the best night of my life.

it was at a show with a fai amount of background noise! There isnt a dealer localy who carries both pairs so a side by side is going to be hard!
