I'd seen the £10-15 smt DACT clones, finally gave in and got one and its great, blows away any conventional pot I've had, and is marginally better than the bigger cheap chinese Dale attenuators on ebay; £10 is about the same as the UK price for a legit Blue Velvet. Tried it on two amps, IMO it makes more difference than a double JLH PSRR board for a fraction of the effort and a little less cost.
I think it would be tough to find a better £10 upgrade without knowing an amp inside out.

I think it would be tough to find a better £10 upgrade without knowing an amp inside out. Many of us have used attenuators with the SC (Jaycar) HA kit (more than 150 constructed by RG members) as well as many other amplifiers. I have used the cheap Asian attenuators, and now use genuine DACT 2 attenuators. The JLH can only be as effective as the amplifier's design permits. It is far more effective with either the SC (Jaycar HA) or the DIY area Class A HA/ preamp than any attenuator, including the DACT2. The quality of the headphones used will also play a major part here too, as will the source material. Alex

Pandapoops,
As one of the builders of the SC Jaycar HA kits and its many modifications, I made a point of listening to each and every change on its own merit (incrementally).
If I was told I had to remove either the smt volume pot OR the dual JLH (reason unimportant) I would choose the pot as its effect was reasonbly subtle in comparison to the JLHs much broader-stroke.
In fact, only changing the value of just the large caps on the JLH was more comparible in size-of-effect to the pot.
As Alex pointed out, different circuits will behave differently so blanket statements are difficult. However, as a user of the JLHs in several different designs and the dact clones in two of those, I cannot agree with your comment, however well it was meant.
While I happily accept your point of an easy and cheap upgrade in the form of the cheap smt DACT clones, I would also encourage you to now remove the dual JLH from the same circuit and see if you still feel that way.
Cheers
