Yup, I screwed up. As my first post here, I already need help determining what step to take about a X10 V3 project of mine. Got some of the ideas here, and am grateful for this site! But when I completed the mod, there were problems. Most notably, is the question, What do I do with that ground wire that is connected from the circuit board to the chassis when the circuit board is out of the chassis, and I am testing the unit? I now know that if it isn't connected, the entire unit goes crazy, and possibly damages the output transistors. I have more parts, but decided not to go any further without advice.

What parts have you replaced?
connect the earth to the case by positioning it near or make an extension.
without the earth the sound will be compromised but shouldn't go 'crazy'.
include some pictures of what you have done.

Well, I have replaced all caps and diodes. Before the 'mod', it worked quite well. I did also use a different transformer, and wired in XLR connector for the power cord. Seems that I measured 29v on the the power rail at first, but not now. I will take photos soon and show you. Not very proud of this work, because in rewiring some components, I had to use wire and skip the ruined circuit traces. These were at the output transistors that appeared to gotten quite hot. It is in this area that trouble may have occurred. At the time, I had a headphone amp and headphones connected, and heard a buzz in the headphones when the headphone amp protected itself from overload.

Here is a shot of the replaced transistors and 'tombstone' heatsinks that I improvised. Wired in the original power supply, but would like to have some voltage checks to work with. Attachments:

4krow Without suitable schematics for this component, it is very hard to offer suitable advice. The only schematic that I have seen is inadequate and full of errors. Alex

Please take a few pics of the BOTTOM of the board, sounds like a problem with one of the tracks.... where have the 6 resistors that sit next to the transistors disappeared to?

Eh, I thought the X-10 V3 is a tube unit?

tube sockets are hidden by the 'tombstone' heat sinks.

As you can see, the traces were burned out by heat. Actually not burned in two, since the unit was still working, but I decided to implement a new plan, putting resistors on the bottom to avoid heat, and place hollow pins to mount the transistors to. Not to mention that I changed out tube soldering for sockets, again replacing some traces for more durable wire. Since I am on the topic, can a 6922 just plug into these sockets and everything will be good? I have already tried the original tubes, but of course that isn't intended to work anyway.
