I've been listening quite a bit to this album from Gary Numan. He's a guy who is literally cut off from people because of Aspergers but he has this obsessive streak in him with regards to whatever he does. He flies a plane as well!!
He's retained his old sound as far as vocals go and he does a lot of the old tricks - overdubbing his vocals - his own voice recorded singing the melody more than once so it sounds 'chorused'. Lovely big fat synth sounds. Vocals doubled in octaves (Rather like Pink Floyd does in many albums).
However, over time, he's become much 'darker' with big bass riffs and very fat analogue type sounds. Electric drum kits and synths. Very little guitars.
He's stayed around and I like his stuff. I liked 'Jagged' a lot which is also very dark sounding.
There is a simplicity in the backing where with synths, it's very tempting to add track after track so that there are masses of layers of sound but he keeps the texture relatively clean so you can hear everything in there without too much 'overload'.
Interestingly, in some ways, the drumming reminds me of one of Peter Gabriel's albums in that it lacks bright drum sounds like cymbals. Gabriel did the same in one of his sets where there are only tom toms, occasional snare and no cymbal throughout the album. This also has no cymbal sounds going on in many tracks.
A pair of punchy, bass ridden headphones suits it beautifully. DT770, DT150 or something similar and this album kicks into life.
Only if you like electronic music though. It's worth a listen.
