Next to the motor inside the Rega there should be a small board with a resistor and a capacitor on it. Make sure that the cap is in good nick (no obvious cracks or discolouration etc.) and replace it if need be. Our deck had been playing oddly for a while, starting out fine from cold but losing speed after a few minutes of play. First we figured it was the drive belt but changing it didn't seem to help, then the we thought it might be the motor. When we took it in for service (same outfit my mother bought it from 25 years ago - though possibly a little out of warranty ) the bloke said the cap was knackered, and in changed it addition to 'rebalancing' the arm and giving is us a new Bias 2 cartridge. £115, thank you very much. I thought it was a bit steep but my mother was paying so I said nothing. Looking now at the general prices of the Bias 2s it probably wasn't that bad a deal. -JoetheArachnid

(...) Curiosity kills the TT cartridge stylus. (...) Wouldn't be much of a loss in that case (= Rega Bias), though... Joe: *lol* Yup, if the pase shifter cap isn't good anymore, the motor will behave rather strangely and might even tend to run backwards, which can be quite a nasty surprise (especially if one runs an expensive cart/needle with brittle boron cantilever...). Greetings from Munich! Manfred / lini

Great stuff guys!!! Some good things to look out for! Will look into that Vinyl forum Prof but have no fear I am going no where I like this place, have since I arrived!! Put me onto the little Neco portable amp, after buying my first set of headphones and has been nothing but helpful since. To be honest I am not to worried about if the deck is not cosmetically perfect that's not what its about....... so long as Rega are as good as people are saying from what I have read then I am going to be super chuffed with my entry back into vinyl. After all after the initial excitement of watching the first bits of vinyl spin and watching that deck it all comes down to what my ears make of it

Yup, change the cartridge to a better one and you will be doing all the surpassed stunts on your bmx after hearing.

Sadly I was ahead of myself about three hours into the session for some reason the TT lost speed Changed the belt for a new spare but to no avail went back up to speed and then lost it again quite quickly...... I am guessing this is purely down to the motor now and the unit is ten years old.......This is not the end of the world though as I am assuming the motor upgrade you can get would sort the problem and am currently looking into that..... Bar that the unit is cosmetically great and I had a great time setting up the arm, tracking, bias last night and listening until I noticed timing was off...... It will just end up a better deck overall now

hmmmm nope forgot that bit will look into. Dunno where to find one and would have to get a soldering iron though lol........or maybe mention on handing in for a service so as not to be ripped off. Least it will sound like I know what I'm talking about hahahaha
Or maybe even pretend to be 'Bipolar' and look for sympathy lol

x2 on that capacitor, far more likely than the motor itself

Right opened up underneath and the cylinder component is intact however the recangular box shaped one has some major cracks, bugger it. Is that what the prob is then :s Lost now but can see a prob but don't want to lose it for a second but have no soldering iron so off for a service tomorrow!

That's exactly the problem we had with ours. If they whip out the capacitor and put in a new one it should be fine. Just make sure that they don't talk you into anything else. -JoetheArachnid

Er, some photos will be easier to get what you mean. Since, you had already reached this stage without sending for service, might as well save some $$ and get that capacitor fixed and see how.

.....bought super glue just in case wheel..... Oh, don't use super glue just in case you need to change the pulley later. Use CONTACT GLUE instead as that will still give you the grip without the problem of taking out the pulley later.

Right not an image of mine but close (think this is some diy version so not correct pcb), the only difference being the banded cylinder component in image is cream and in mine is green. The offending itemThe other rectangular component with the silver sticker (0,02F) on the right is the one with all the cracks and I am hoping is the capacitor??? That the one you had changed Joe? Am popping into shop after work today to discuss options with service manual print outs and slightly more armed than usual. Thanks to all so far!!!Tried again last night was ok but lost speed by the end of one side of album.........needed to listen again sooooo badly!!!!!! Jared

Your "cylinder" is a resistor (15kohm, 2or3 watt?), the "block" is indeed a capacitor and very easy to change.

Hi Chris Why is it that every time I see this thread, I can imagine Mike's version being " Clearing up has got me TENTING ? " It can't be something in the water , because I can't afford to drink Scotch these days.

Hi Chris Why is it that every time I see this thread, I can imagine Mike's version being " Clearing up has got me TENTING ? " Not just me then ;D I was expecting a late night scree on the orgasmic experience of sniffing vinyl, fiddling with settings, swinging arms, rubber belts, etc.

Its in shop pulley wheel was veryloose too. Well you could just lift it off lol. £20 to save me the hassle and get everything greased, tightned, balanced and checked over. Deffo gonna take on the maintenance after downloading all the service pdf's. Doesn't look like much to it really and prob invest in a soldering iron soon! Bloke reckons it prob is just the wheel which would be cool..... If thats the case then quids in and spin............new stylus would be next move probably but considering it played a record from 1987 without a crackle or a pop then its probably fine but ohhhhh the temption!!!!!!!!!! Gonna get Thursten Moore's album from last year for its return as I have a feeling some strings including a harp may just get my juices flowing All about the music!!!!!

Well it ended up with a service and new PCB for £25 all inclusive. Pulley wheel was loose too and motor was in need of some oil etc etc. Stylus seems to be fine, sat here listening to it for the last 3-4 hours and am loving it!! Bought Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess 180gram remastered LP. . . . . . . WOW! System loved it. As to the darkside, I've crossed over.
Can't help wondering what a new stylus might bring but hey if you ain't got the itch then your not normal . . . . In time one will be added as I'm sure they have made advances in the last ten years.
For now though, mmmmmm ear candy B-)
