Had to clear out the attic for some work to be done about three weeks ago and it just so happened that involved bring down all my old vinyl :S.......MISTAKE! Spent the whole of the last week just looking at it pulling it out, looking at the sleeves, looking at the inner sleeves, staring at the grooves and .......WITH NOTHING TO PLAY IT ON!!!!!!! Now heres the thing some of that stuff I could not get on any other format even if I wanted to and sat there wanting to listen to it is doing my head in! Now after thinking a bit I have decided I am not really interested in converting it to a digital format but would love to get a turntable after all this time and just enjoy it, some hands on old school listen times. Not looking to spend a fortune but just head in on an entry level and go from there...so I have looked into it a little but with nigh on two decades of no turntable have come up with two possibles. Rega Planar RP1 or Pro-ject Debut? Both seem to have good reviews but just wondered if any of you current vinyl heads have any opions either way that might help sway my decision??I was nearly dribbling while fondling it all last night Thanks J

If you want to buy new and have minimum hastle both of those are great choices for the money. If you want to go down the second hand route there is tons of choice that will end in a better result. e.g. Manticore Mantra ( completely biased as I run one ) Systemdek IIX Townshend Avalon (very rare though) Michell Syncro Project Classic etc, etc. Best/easiest if they come complete with a tonearm (Rega/Linn etc) eg on ebay now systemdek IIX, Project Classic

Wow thanks CJ I am loving the look of that Systemdek!! Plus its UK made and looks brand new. Another plus is its about 15mins drive from where I work. Prob is I haven't a clue what sort of price its worth or why it would be better hahhahha The Project classic was for a dust cover though looking into systemdek now but feel free to enlighten me

Might as well go for a Rega 3 second hand that comes with the best VFM tonearm RB300. With that, you will have a long time before upgradagratis enter your blood stream again. Lots of aftermarket accessories for that after you have settled down. But be warned! Once back into the dark side, very hard to go out again. It's that fanatically good when setup probably for present TT system when compared to present digital for the same price.
Cartridge go for a mc if possible. If budget constraint, go for a HO mc will be still better than a similar price one for mm. If you like the big wholesome sound closer to live, a Grado mi will also be good. This is also a HO and don't need a pre pre amp or traffo. Some low cost mc to consider are from Benz MC20E (used to be), Denon DL103R or 103, Dynavector 10X and Sumiko Bluepoint Special. MM or MI, the mentioned Grado range, Audio Technical or Shure. If you want more upmarket Ortofon Black will be the best around in terms of sound and review.

Today at 1:01, bmxargh wrote: It was a very popular and well reviewed deck in its day. Spares are easy to obtain. Including arm you should not be paying any more than the new price of the Rega RP1 you mentioned and that's for excellent condition. OOPS! Oh well, you know what it looks like at least The deck was from an era when the value on record decks was very high. CD had been out a while and was claiming ever increasing market share, the turntable manufacturers, plenty of them then, were in deep competition with each other and CD, offering exceptional value for money. You would have to pay MUCH MORE than the £200 mark to obtain a new deck of equal quality now. Cartridge wise, I, like Chong, also have a preference for Moving Coil types. However, keeping to your stated brief, if you buy a second hand deck/arm combo and require a new cartridge, I would go for the Audio Technica AT95e (for Rega style arms) or the AT110 (for old-style Linn arms). They are very cheap and very good. They are Moving Magnet types so will be compatible with any amplifier that has a phono input. (MC requires a circuit that not all amps have). .....an excuse to show mine (old pic, changed a little) Manticore Mantra

Looks very nice! Already lost out to 3 players on the E of the Bay...... It will come down to one I like thats rated and comes in at the right price but you have to allow to travel for some and fuel is expensive!!!! But understandably some don't want to ship or are lazy The System one doesn't end for a few days but quite a few Rega 3's come up and I like the idea of both. Rega may swing it due to ease of parts.... Loose myself to the darkside hmmmmm well thats a huge possibilty! I mean most of this vinyl is the stuff that made me who I am and who can deny their musical history and if it sounds good too I am lost already My better half already moans about CD storage hahahaha this could be a whole new test, but a man can not live on bread and water alone!!!!!!! A load of vinyl has been taking up half the kitchen table for nearly 3 days ;D

Nice job Mick!
I think you also made the aluminium billets for the AT-F5 Stilton cartridge that preceded the present jobby?

Yup thousands of the bl""dy things for the Stilton Nagaoka range Chris, good earner as they say, but boring on a 2 week a month basis.
I stopped producing Doug Hewitts components after a run of about 200 sets of Manticore Mantra parts, nice enough guy, but he always had a problem finding (or parting with) money to pay his bills.
In fact to this day he still owes me money, along with a couple of others in the Hi-Fi industry.
Mick.

A load of vinyl has been taking up half the kitchen table for nearly 3 days. Can share with us what you have there? A pretty tolerent partner Prof A lot of 80's + early 90's punk, from names you would know through to bands you may not. The press runs of less well known bands would be quite small some only ever released a couple of singles and some may have had the one album and you just can't get it on any other format. It was a good and 'vibrant' scene was my first love musically and always will be and was more than just the music really... The collection also contains smatterings of lots of other styles though Hip Hop, Classical, Rock new and old etc etc Saddest thing was I left over half of my collection with an ex girlfriend many a year ago and have regretted ever since as there is no way of getting it back....... Just like music, it really came into my life and I just went BOOM! but I don't think there are many on this forum who would not have the same to say its what its all about, what you play it on is unimportant so long as you get to hear it!! Oh and the 4th 'Rega 3' has just slipped through my fingers hahahaha damn you ebay

OH and the 'Pay no more than' on your punk records really could help boost your collection hahahaha
Though I can remember going into larger record stores like Virgin and that would be printed on the cover and they would have stuck their own price tag on for more!!! Never got that!

A pretty tolerent partner Prof Good for you and your music ............ A lot of 80's + early 90's punk, from names you would know through to bands you may not. The press runs of less well known bands would be quite small some only ever released a couple of singles and some may have had the one album and you just can't get it on any other format. More or less me too! But would you believe me if I tell you that my first music was Carpenter on cassette when I was in secondary school. Yup, I was a young pirate then recording cassettes like Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Loggin and Messina records from my class mates. It was a good and 'vibrant' scene was my first love musically and always will be and was more than just the music really... The collection also contains smatterings of lots of other styles though Hip Hop, Classical, Rock new and old etc etc Yup, IMVHO, the 80s and beginning of the 90s were where the music really is. Maybe it's just our taste but I also listen to current new groups like The Ting Tings, Ian Dury, Blood Orange and lately Metronomy and Blind Pilot. Although they are musically as vibrant as those in the 80s and early 90s but there are not many. Only once in a while I hit upon them from recommendations from a music freak friend, reviews and here at RG. Ian is our guy here for music as he does highlight some stimulating music when he hit upon them as he's a famous pro musician. I listen to lots, too many to even remember who is who stage, and highlighted only those that hit me with a right, left, centre KO type here at RG. Saddest thing was I left over half of my collection with an ex girlfriend many a year ago and have regretted ever since as there is no way of getting it back....... No worries, have free time just look out for some more used record stores in your vicintiy and discover some gems here and there. May have to spend quite a lot of time there if it's a biggy store. Oh and the 4th 'Rega 3' has just slipped through my fingers hahahaha damn you ebay See, it's that in demand!

Don't need to know any more than his username but won't deny I am a tad curious now hahahaha
I liked this forum even more each time I visit, seems to be all interest and not a lot of wasted banter. A++

Ian is 'Rabbit'.
Somehow reading this thread has finally persuaded me to buy a phono preamp after a long time resisting. We have a Rega Planar 3 and a fairly extensive vinyl collection (both belonging to my mother) but I don't tend to listen to them much because the only option for headphones has been the pretty poor HPO on our integrated amplifier. When my kit arrives in a few weeks it'll be interesting to see if I listen to more vinyl.

Do you know Joe is GI Joe? Ok, I'm just kidding! I can't resist and so do you know Sandy is Sandman from Metallica? Frans is our Nutty Professor extraordinaire. Me is Music Is Better Than Sex. Really, I just don't know why we have a Rabbit here as Ian. Maybe he followed the Chinese Zodiac. His music is not rabbit sissy stuff, btw. See?

Hahahaha yeah shes cool with it as she will be donating to the cost.....Tis my birthday 12th May and this will be my present that she will chip in towards. One downside that means I am not allowed to play with it till that date Bro is picking up tomorrow or Friday and then I see him Sunday! Spoke to seller tonight and he is a retired fellow who seemed nice enough, so I'm hoping he has looked after it well but has never had it serviced. Also spoke to a dealer of Rega in Bath local to me and mentioned what I had bought and asked how much for a general service arm and main bearing tightening and oil replacement in the main bearing, check motor, check stylus etc and for the money all in including buying it I'd be at about £175 which is still an awesome price for what I got I think. I would think about servicing myself but having not owned a deck for so long and not having a clue as to how to check the Stylus is ok or not and with no known previous service it may be worth while......They were able to look and do work if I dropped in Tues and would have ready to pick up Friday. Leaving me free to set up and play lots the next day being my Birthday (could be a very very cool day) But I will give it the once over and make a decision on if to service or not once in front of me. If anyone has any tips on what to look for that would be cool and or tips on set up as thats going to be a whole new ball game after all this timeI am literally feeling like an excited kid, can't wait. Can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it and the involvement of playing it!! Nearly 43 going on 16.........still, now wheres my skateboard gone

Hahahaha yeah shes cool with it as she will be donating to the cost.....Tis my birthday 12th May and this will be my present that she will chip in towards. Cool, man! An awesome relationsnship it is to be .............. Spoke to seller tonight and he is a retired fellow who seemed nice enough, so I'm hoping he has looked after it well but has never had it serviced. Oh, usually those older folks treasure what they have as they find that they have work hard for it and make sure it's not cosmetically challenged at least. Same for those doctor owners in general. If anyone has any tips on what to look for that would be cool and or tips on set up as thats going to be a whole new ball game after all this timeIt will still work fine if not serviced and it will be more interesting to service yourself in a DIY way. What is playing TT if you don't tinker with it? However, since this is your birthday present from your dear wife, don't get your hands "dirty". Paying an additional about 40 pounds with new ORIGINAL Rega belt and oil and all cleaned up and checked is relatively ok and will make your birthday wish more like a birthday present than a 2nd hand purchase. After, learn the ropes about TT tinkering again and have DIY fun. Ok, I will first chip in later. Chris can also chip in on this as he was also a former UK hifi sales guy. I am literally feeling like an excited kid, can't wait. Can't wait to get my grubby little hands on it and the involvement of playing it!! Nearly 43 going on 16.........still, now wheres my skateboard gone Hey, who say we are old "uncles"? I going to Uranus on an off tangent course too at 52. However, the only part that most hifi souls feel is old "uncles" is that we tend to listen more and more to the middle of the last century stuff. Well, Ian and Chris, are you cursing me yet?

Yeah, if you have kids running around. Curiosity didn't kill the cat. Curiosity kills the TT cartridge stylus. My friend had changed 4 cartridges ever since and had given up TT until his kids are more mature.
