Hi Ian What most people fail to realise, is that the X CAN V2 is a SOLID STATE amplifier that merely uses a twin triode in place of a normal transistor differential pair. The Differential Pair part of it is only a small part of the overall amplifier. That is why I was able to suggest a SOLID STATE design tweak to reduce it's gain. It could just as easily have used a couple of reasonably matched FETs in that area to obtain a fairly similar sound signature. Some people think because it gets hot and chars the PCB in the process, and emits an orange type glow, unless the tubes are gassy, like their elderly owners , that it is a proper valve amplifier. IT AINT !!! ;D Kind Regards Alex

That's what cracks me up when people go on about valve amp sound!!!!! ;D Now the cat's out ........ I think of the V2 as a Harebit. (A cross between a rabbit and a hare) Some see it as Rabbit like ( ) and some see it as a Hare, but no-one normally mentions that it's a Harebit. A Himshe. Neither one nor t' other!!!! ;D It's OK, Chong may be in bed at the moment!!!! (Dreaming of valves)

Ian A little bit like the TAINT ? Taint arse and taint ... Alex P.S. The attached schematic is not official, and may have some errors. P.P.S. I should be in bed too. Attachments:

I guess the tubes are just the flavouring!! I hadn't realised that when Mike modded mine, he adjusted the volume range. I always thought it tracked really well, but it's part of the mods that he did. So it has hidden power behind it, which may account for its lively dynamics that I really like.

You two are cracking me up!!! Chong - you are a naughty boy. Stop trying to wind Alex and Frans up!! Oh, we are living in the middle of last century remember? So we have to use the mechanical clock winding instead of no winding like the digital clock. Anyway, they are the digital clocks and watches as they believe in the full digital measurement is better. So Rolex and Omega mechanical watches are nonsense and have no value in the present digital watches. Hmm, is that the truth and nothing but the truth? Go check out the auctions. No worry especially for Frans. We are having fun "attacking" each other in the true spirit of fun. Guarantee or money back American style! The noise thing on the V2 is surprisingly low to the ears. (Maybe because mine has been modded) I really don't hear any noise from it so anything more is theoretical for me. I'm currently comparing it to the Neco Mosfet and you know, I think the V2 is slightly better!! (Even though the Neco may be quieter I guess) Ah, you heard it too. Super quiet even when volume all the way to max right? Yeah, like SS amp quietness. The V2 should sound better than the Neco to most that know how to hear for good sound nearer to Live. Let's not even talk about technical as that is already superflous when the sound is better. I do miss black and white TV and The Hitchcock Half Hour. Gave me much more enjoyment than most of the crap on TV in high definition, stereo and colour nowadays. Oh, they still do do black and white in critically acclaimed films. Remember Schlinder List? There is also one about Nanking Massacre in black and white that I had saw. The title I didn't fully take note of. So all these award winning films will be considered as livng in middle of the last century too.

It's OK, Chong may be in bed at the moment!!!! (Dreaming of valves) Not only dreaming but planning to acquire one for more flavours for different HPs. Hey, I shouldn't be here as I'm more speakerfi than headfi. Heh, heh, heh ................ Hmm, what I have now? 1) Full Transistor SC Class A HA 2) Tube / Transistor Hybrid (MF X-Can V2) 3) Full Valve set coming? Not so fast. Still yet to discover one for the best VFM .............

You make me laugh!!! The V2 has remained top of my pile for a while. In fact since I got it. The V8 was my first look at MF amps. I loved its clarity but eventually felt that deep bass was missing, so Mike dug a V2 out and modded it for me. Much better. More character and more guts in its sound. (or is it colouration, Alex? ) Mike is a genius at de-noising things and he got it so silent, I wondered whether it was on when the light was on. The quietness really surprised me; especially as I felt that Mike wouldn't hear the low level noise I was getting. (It was extremely low but bat ears here got it!!) He sorted it so that I couldn't detect a trace of noise. He's also done that for my Sunrise. Totally quiet. I don't know why, but I am very sensitive to amp noises. I guess it's when it mixes with any noise on the recordings themselves or from the source and the two noises mixed together get to me big time!! Mike also put more guts into my V8 but if I'm honest, I still prefer the V2. It looks as though yours has been looked after too so when you've finished, you'll have a lovely amp there. You'll be looking for a D10 next.

You shouldn't hear ANY noise from a decent amplifier (apart from the noise you call music).... a lot of friggin' good if you're hearing pops, crackles and hum with nothing playing. I don't care what anybody says, for the original £129 rrp the X-CAN V2 was an absolute BELTER... of course it's not a "proper" valve amp but the valves DO contribute to the tonality and this is why it's appealing to some people's ears. The X-CANS (V1) was an extremely weird bastard it had opamps and valves... if you removed the valves it would still play but only in the mid to high frequency range Chong, I sent you a few bits and bobs today, should be with you next week.

Those are lovely stuffs but unfortunately low power and OTL by the looks of them. You know I'm more Americana in hifi but retaining also the British views as my country was formerly a British colony. How to have a compete divorce from that? Even my father still listen to BBC World Service, his favourite in fact, as he was a scholar at Lougborough U after the war in the UK for more than 5 years if I remember correctly. Yes, he did told me UK was still in shambles and rebuilding somehwere in 1948 when he was there. The search continues .......... Woo?

That's because of your job as a pro musician and all the years spend in playing and listening to Live music and at the studios trained your ears to be that. You have to, right? My father was speaking with an Englsih accent when he came back from UK. I was @$#&*_(*__76656 when I came out from the bloody army. Still is but in jest most of the time now and not talking like nobody business as now I'm back as a civilian and working class. I can't talk like that to customers.

Wow, when I knock at the V2 casing or plug in the HP jack, can hear microphony. Anyway, to get rid or reduce that?

Oops, no offence to America as I still love the American society overall for their free wheeling and no limit sentiment. Hey, yanks you need to catch up in that although it's supposed to be military grade!

You can lose the 10uF input caps, just jumper across the pads... if you want to keep them then replace them for non polar types. The 220uF non polar ouput coupling caps can be replaced with 470uF or 1000uF non polar types (nichicon MUSE are good) this is a good idea if you are using low Z 'phones.... enter your headphone impedance in the "resistance" field and your value of output cap in the capacitance field www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-RCpad.htmOh, the 10ufs are the input caps, eh? Those 2 in front of the V2, right? I suspected that due to the values on opening up the V2 again yesterday. However, they are polar caps and how can that be used for AC signal? I can't confirm that with no right schematic around. Lazy to back trace as I opened up the V2 just to get the cap values so that I can go out to the hifi diy shops to do some "treasure" hunting. Found some BP Muse at 100uf but not the higher value ones and so the search continues for the best to come about upgrading the caps. Found the MKP replacement for the 221 ceramic though. Will update them later with photo here.

You can clean the faceplate with some isopropyl alcohol and a piece of kitchen roll... this will remove any ingrained dirt and will bring it up like new.... when putting it all back together be sure to scrape the paint where the ground tag connects to the enclosure... may sound daft but it helps Yes, I did that today! Here: Look at the dirt on the cotton wool ........... The ground now ...........

The transistors will be fine, don't worry about replacing them. I know. But higher specs ones for those MOSPEC TIP 110 and 115. Is there a direct higher spec replacements for them? Anyone? the stock power caps are 1000uF / 35V, I replace these with 1500uF / 35V and the extra 5000uF brings welcome improvements to the performance. I think I will replace them with 2000 to 3000uf when the diodes as well as the PS traffo are upspeced. Too high a uf becomes too boomy from past experience with X-Dac V3 mode. Also, since the PS is regulated, there is no need to go so high like the X-Dac V3 which is unregulated for the analog portion.

I've sent you two 470uF BP MUSE Chong (and a couple of 10uF MUSE)... as I say, you can remove the 10uF and jumper over the pads with a wire link... sounds better without them inline... if you must have them (if you have high DC on your source output) then fit the non polar ones.
Mike.
