I downloaded the latest version of JPlay today: jplay.eu/I tried JPlay once before and was put off by the inconvenience of the GUI, or rather the complete lack of GUI meaning that computer playback was about as convenient as wax cylinders. It is now available and can be used as a plug in for other players, including J River Media Centre: www.jriver.com/ which I use. Having had a good listen, I think there is a subtle improvement, not night and day, but perhaps slightly taughter bass and a bit more texture. My biggest issue with it is the price, £82.00 for a plugin for a JRiver, which itself only costs £32.00 - that's a bit steep! Had it been somewhere around the £20.00 mark I would already have bought it, but at that price I think I might wait and see what JRiver themselves come up with as they seem fairly responsive to user requests/input and may well do something similar themselves as an update.

Owen I still use the freeware cPlay because of the cost of jPlay. With Windows, for best results you ideally need a decent soundcard that has an Asio driver, and coax SPDIF Out. It could also be worthwhile trying Fidelizer for Windows users. An asynchronous USB DAC, NOT a normal type ,would also work well as would USB out with a John Kenny HiFace to an SPDIF DAC.USB needs more work to get great results. Alex

Hi Xerxes i totally agree with your thinking about the first version lacking a GUI which made it feel a little ''clunky''.it almost put me off but curiosity got the better of me (luckily enough ). Jplay have a pretty useful forum for any problems that arise. the new version which can also be plugged into Foobar and MP3toys is pretty cool and with the latter a joy to use (and i mean superb). the new version also grabs a pre set amount of RAM at start up so no problems with ending up with a whole bunch of fragmented RAM. also have a play with the settings have you tried 24bit playback yet?or dedicated core?or throttle mode? river and beach? I've found that just a little time with set up can improve things still further. IMHO it does sound very good indeed and puts my PC into the great CD transport league. now the cost fair point as software goes it's pretty pricey but those guys have put a great deal of time and effort into developing their player. I've had 2 updates so it seems that one payment keeps you in the latest improvements how many times have we bought something and then had to pay again for the latest version? sooo £82.00 for a top notch player with all of the usability trimming well how much for a good quality CD transport? I'm happy with my Jplay and really glad i bought it. it's fair enough for the guys that put the time into making it work have a small return IMHO. respect by the way i remember how much you disliked the original and it takes honesty to post back and say what you have. I've not tried Cplay but others rate it so could be worth a go. a thread on how to set it up and get the most out of it would be really useful. soooooooooo i know how it looks but noooo i have no connection what so ever with Jplay or its authors but credit where it's due take care

Hi Shaun After jPlay , you wouldn't want to go back to cPlay because it is too rudimentary.A few people have stated they prefer cPlay over jPlay for actual SQ , but that may come down to personal preference? To be quite honest, I don't use jPlay at this point in time due to financial constraints, especially after spending so much recently to do the necessary repairs to pass Rego inspection, and pay 3rd party insurance etc. to keep my old Mitsubishi Magna on the road. e.g. $700 for new front CV joints and the necessary wheel alignment , and almost $500 for 3rd party insurance.Thank heavens I hadn't had any fines for speeding or parking misdemeanors, as that info is accessed from the RTA by the insurance companies, and you then get penalised twice for the same thing ! Bloody robbing bathplugs! I hope to use jPlay one day in the not too distant future, which may even use further enhancements due to being in touch with Marcin and Josef from jPlay during present investigations already discussed in RG. Fidelizer for example, needs to emulate Safe Mode a little more. Kind Regards Alex

Kind Regards Alex Hi Alex i did a fair bit of driving down under and believe me it's much more liberal than here. er mostly because we spent so much time in the bush ;D on Jplay i think that what we really need here is a more in depth comparison between Jplay and Cplay. i for one would be interested in opinions SQ wise and I'm sure others would also. they have supplied ''review copies'' to other places ''mags'' and the like so why not here. all we need is someone willing to undertake said comparison.. take care

Shaun Since when do you need other people to tell you how things sound ? You already have jPlay, and cPlay is freeware. Regards Alex

Owen I wouldn't count on it. Recently there has been a rather nasty war of words between both sides in C.A., with JRiver going to extreme lengths , including starting multiple threads, to attack jPlay. Even to the extent of jRiver posting unenforcable demands to jPlay as regards association of the 2 products. That thread was quickly removed by C.A. Admin , who living nearby to JRiver has been very supportive of them. Alex

Regards Alex Hi Alex you are right but it's good for discussion and helps people make informed choices about software. there is soooo much to choose from player wise free and not free. i have tried Cplay and did not much care for the interface but others may feel differently as I'm a bit of a PC klutz. I'm not so good at reviews so it's going to need to be someone who: 1) understands the way that these players work and has a grip on the philosophy behind them. 2)has a good grip on Cplay which i found a little tricky. know any one that may be suitable? I've come across quite a few people on DIYAUDIO who have now started using Jplay because ''it sounds better'' than what they have. I've found that Jplay (RAM player) moves things much closer to USB pen playback SQ wise. all good stuff take care

You ! Your ears are much younger than mine. Nobody is asking for an indepth report here. Just try a few familiar tracks using both players. I can give you a copy of the rudimentary settings that I use for cPlay if need be. While you are at it, you could also try cPlay in Safe Mode. Kind Regards Alex

Does anyone have a safe, active link for cPlay? All the sites I've tried are either dead ends or dodgy.

Hi Javier,
That was one of the "dead ends" for me.
I get "IE could not connect display that web page"
and Firefox "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"
It's not logged on my firewall as blocked.

Hi Javier, I use IE8 (for XP). It turned out it was my anti virus/firewall being over zealous, although it did not log the block and still wouldn't play ball when I put cPlays site into the exempt list. Very odd Anyhoosen, I shut it down, popped on AVG freebie temporarily and all was well. Cheers, Chris

If anybody who has cPlay, jPlay or similar, and has suitable high res capable gear would like to try a few high res tracks extracted in Safe Mode and UL as Uncompressed Zips, please send me a PM for the DL links Alex

I've been a Cplay fan for quite a while. I use XP & ASIO drivers (Soundcard & Ploytec). If I understand correctly JPlay works better with Vista & W7 setups. Cplay requires a Cue file and the Cmp setup works well to rip CDs but not to play selected tracks from a database (like foobar etc). Jplay with Foobar etc would be much more user friendly. I do though think the price is quite high. £80 or so puts me off when CPlay is free. I do wonder how many would take it up at a lower (say £25) price just to give it a go.

Hi Freddy have you tried the trail offer of Jplay? i have W7 32bit and it works well with that but I've not tried it with XP but a quick scan around their forum should find an answer to that issue. Jplay trial version is down-loadable from the web site and would give you a flavor of what it can do for no cost. it's slick as a weasel in Foobar and IMHO even better in MP3toys. take care
