Am running in a Squeezebox Touch which is capable of streaming at up to 24/96. My HD Tracks downloads have never sounded better, 16/44.1 sounding simply amazing.
Bought at Currys/PC World for £199.99. This a serious piece of high end audio and don't let the price fool you in to thinking otherwise.
More comments later.

Awesome, glad you like it. Next after you have logged a few hours look for a linear regulated psu. Have fun.

Advice from anyone on interconnects? In the context, that is, of long runs. I'd like to site the S'box near my usual listneing position which is 4m from my X-DAXCv3 / Dacmagic. I would need a little over 5m in that case.Co-ax cable? Optical?
OTTOMH i'd say co-ax.
Comments?

Derek, the Squeezebox has a remote, yeah? So why you need to put it near to you? 4 m is a bit long but then it's digital as claimed by the experts and should not affect sound. For this type of length, I go for balance.

You probably already know about the free software modifications for improving SQ but just in case you don't here is a link: soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com/

You probably already know about the free software modifications for improving SQ but just in case you don't here is a link: soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com/Thanks for the link - I have read that a number of tweaks and mods are around and I'll follow this link later today. On today's agenda is re-organising my music library discs.... up to now I have had anything above 24/48 stored separately. This is no longer necessary as I just point the S'box to a track and press 'play'. Anything above 96kHz is downsampled on the fly (using Sox apparently, IIRC) .. I suppose I should downsample from 176.4 and 192 off-line for max SQ but I don't think I can be bothered as I don't have much in these formats. Meanwhile am still enjoying it 'out of the box'. As I said the SQ is top notch; makes me want to just sit and listen. The easy and smooth reproduction just grabs you by the heart, that's something you cannot measure too well. The built-in on-the-fly FLAC decoding sounds good ;-) ..... although, I must stress, I would NEVER actually de-code from FLAC on the fly! I will ALWAYS de-FLAC files first using ADOBE Audition. Well..... may be not always.... ;-) How does it handle MP3? The S'box is VERY revealing of the compromise that less than 'full fat' data formats offer. MP3 sounds very synthetic, as does internet radio. For background listening only I'm afraid. I will waste a lot of time today. D.

For this type of length, I go for balance. Yes, it's got a remote. And a very responsive system it is too. But the Squeezebox people have used type which is just a tad small for use at anything over, say, 2 to 3 m; this is one of the few negative comments one reads in reviews. At 4 m I can only just make out the text and I have good eyesight too, albeit with spectacles. The Touch has a touch sensitive screen (the clue's in the name!) so I am imagining how convenient it would be to have this small and neat piece of equipment on the coffee table next to my main listening seat? The cable run would be out of sight behind floor length curtains and other furniture. The obvious answer is to make up a long interconnect and give it a try. I still have my 10m of decent instrument cable co-ax lying around. Balanced? You'll have to help me on that one. I'm not familiar with balanced digital cables. Do you mean using something like a 2-core with screen microphone cable? Derek

Hi Derek
I bought one of these yesterday. The sound quality is very good for what it is for sure.
Did your Touch automatically update when first plugged in?
I'm having a problem with the USB input, its only recognised the presence of a stick once, and I've tried 5 that all work perfectly well elsewhere. Have you tried USB yet?
It seems the software version can affect things like this from what I see online.

If you own an iPhone, iTouch, or iPad you can download an app to use as a remote. Longer range than 4 meters.

Sorry for that as I was not clear enough. I mean if there is a balance XLR digital output, I will prefer to use that as the option because of the length. Obviously, the SQ Touch does not have one. Just go with your instrument coaxial to see what's the effect like. But I can tell you, it will be better with a better digital cable eventhough it's in digital. Try one and be convinced.

Yes I realise that now - with all displayed on the iPhone screen then that would be a great solution. I am, however, a very light mobile phone user so the iPhone or similar is bit over the top. I have a basic phone tarif which costs me £8.60 a month and that includes a touch screen phone, internet access and SatNav (it's a Nokia running Symbian? plus it doesn't do wi-fi). I could maybe consider an Android phone when my contract is up for renewal but..... I've been spending enough lately without adding a divorce to the procedings. Derek

I was much the same, until I bough the Android phone, I had used the cheapest phone I could get my hands on with no contract, just pay-as-you-go. After reading a favourable review: www.trustedreviews.com/huawei-blaze-u8510_Mobile-Phone_review I bought a used, unlocked Huawei Blaze on Ebay, so I just put my existing sim card in it and it worked. I originally tried a smart phone for the touch screen QWERTY keyboad, because I find texting with the number keys really frustrating and a real chore. It works well for this and I can type messages much quicker, but then I started trying out some of the apps and other things you can do with it and was very pleased, even though it's only a budget smartphone. It works well as an MP3 player and now I've added a 32GB SD card has a larger capacity than my actual MP3 player; I've even read a couple of free Kindle books on it.

I spoke to Virgin Mobile and got an early upgrade. Today I am expecting a new Android phone (a simple HTC Wildfire S; 'free' with my very low-cost tariff) and I'm looking forward to trying out a Squeezebox app. As you did, I think I'll get a large SD card; phone will come with 2GB which may not be enough if I start to carry music around on it - not something I have done before.... but I should. I too am def. a fan of touch screen QWERTY keyboards; makes texting and emailing so convenient. Derek

my daughter uses an Android tablet in her bedroom to listen to Spotify via the Squeezebox, she just loves it.
my wife uses the remote that came with the Squeezebox Duet, she loves listening to internet radio from all around the world :-)

Sorry, noob question. The remote on the phone can only be used with your system connected thru a wifi, right?

Only slightly off topic so please forgive me but has anyone seen or tried this yet: - forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?94512-Announce-Enhanced-Digital-Output-app-USB-Dac-and-192k-Digital-OuputIt is an unsupported-by-Logitech third party app but has got a big 'thumbs up' from John Svenson, a noted authority on the Touch. I have tried it into my Caimanised Beresford 7520 DAC and it sounds very good. I've only had a very brief listen through phones but I am very impressed - anybody else got any opinions? I'll listen some more, later, and through speakers as well, and report back but meanwhile you might like to try it for yourself. If you do, to start with, ignore the option about a workround if you don't have a powered USB hub - I don't have any hub in place and mine plays faultlessly. Cheers, Dave. EDIT: - It should tell you something that users are posting on the thread of replacing their Toolbox v.3 mods with this app.
